Trying to decide which chain to use, but have heard about some people having to put a washer behind the countershaft sprocket because the non-o ring chain is narrower. Any input? Also, would you recommend steel sprockets or the purty renthal alum? Also, I ride desert with a smattering of mountain, stream crossing type of stuff, if that helps, thanks.

If you want the most life out of your chain & sprockets, get a good quality O-ring chain and name brand (Sprocket Specialists, Sunstar) steel sprockets.

If you shim the c/s sprocket then your sprockets will be out of alignment. The 520 part of your chain should still be 0.520 inches. If your chain guides are well worn in then the non-o-ring chain might bind in the grooves some. I would think it is a bad move just because o-ring chains are darn nice to have on an xr. I just replaced chain and sprockets with steel sprockets and an o-ring chain from the rockymountain people for less than 100 bucks and I am very happy. No stretch and I refuse to lube with anything but wd40 after a wash.
