How in the world do you get a bike for a growing teenager?

My (very) younger brother is 14 and looks like he is going to be a tall person. He's about 5'3 right now. Right now, I think something like an XR-100 would be perfect for him, but he'd be bored and too big for it in about a year or two. It seems like a MX 125 or even maybe a kdx would be great for him for a longer period of time, but those are too big for him right now. Any recommendations? Just go with the bigger bike? Get the smaller bike and sell it in a year or two?

I had the same problem a year ago and actually still have a size problem with my 10 year old son.
... last year I got him a xr100r for his 9th and modified the suspension for his height. He is about ready for me to raise the suspension back to stock, but he is at a point where he getting better than the bike, ie. wants to race and try the dbls... I would like to get him an 85 but he is not tall enough, and I don't want to height modify one, and he will age out of the 65 class next year, soooo ... I guess he'll have to ride the xr one more year. If your lil brother is 14 & 5'3", the XR100 will feel too small and underpowered.
Good luck to ya.

If he has any experience,a KX 100 or RM 100 might be a good choice...bigger than an 80,but not as intense as a 125.This size bike might last a little while.

At 14 I got my first 200 Enduro bike I would reccomend the same for any EXPERIENCED 14 year old. When I got mine I had 2 years of riding under my belt. If your son is in a similar situation get the KDX 200/220. If your son is more of a beginner than I was at 14 look at the Yamaha TTR 225 and 250, a 200 -250 Honda XR or even a Yamaha WR 250 (this bike is a little tall but it can be de-restricted with minor modifications as your son gets better and will last for years). The power is a bit mellower on these bikes.

If he wants to race a 250 4-stroke motocross bike will be the most forgiving and will last for several years with good maintainence.

Check the ttr 125, I believe it has more suspention than the xr100. If he can touch the ground, the bike will last him a long time.

My son is 12 and has the TTR 125, it is a nice bike to learn on but I feel he will out grow it soon. The XR 200 is a tad bit taller, and the new CRF230 may be taller still. One word of caution, unless he is a ripped bodybuilder you may want to pass on the TTR 225, it is HEAVY!!! My wife has one and when I have to lift it up on a stand or retrieve it after a spill, I am close to throwing my back out. By comparison, the TTR 125 is a feather weight.

an xr200 is probably a good happy medium. . shorter, easy to ride... . just get him a nice old late 80's xr for the next couple years, and you can probably sell it for close to what you paid after he wants to move up
