2003 KLX 125 For Wife?

Hey,
I have been looking for my wife's first dirt bike and trying to come up with the best solution for her. She is not quite sure what kind of riding she wants to do, but I am pretty sure it's not clearing doubles. Anyway, I have been looking at the new KLX 125 as her first bike. Can anybody give me any feedback on this bike other than what I have read in the mags and online?
Today she sat on the DRZ 125 and 125L. The 125 seemed to suit her better since her feet couldn't touch the ground on the L. I just worry if the bike is gonna do the job.
If anybody has ridden this bike yet or has more insight than the mags, please give me a shout.
Thanks!

is it just me or is the new klx a 110?
i dont have any experience on the DRZ, but the ttr would be a good choice for a beginning rider. could you give us her hight, weight, etc.?

Hey Blue,
My wife is 5'4", 115lbs. The seat height on the DRZ/KLX 125 is 30.5" which seems to be good for her. You are correct about Kawi having a KLX 110, but the KLX 125 is new for '03. She is a beginner rider as well. It will be her first bike. Here is the link to the new Kawi:
Kawasaki KLX125
What I mainly worry about is whether or not the bike is going to have enough power for her. I have never ridden a ttr or even this elusive kawi, but money is money and more importantly if the bike isn't going to make her happy then it's going to ruin the experience, and that could ruin the chance for more riding for me!
(Geez, that sounded self-serving)
If more info is needed, lemme know.

I had the same problem last year. I went with the TTR125 and it fits my wife perfectly. She is 5'2". I ride it sometimes and it is a blast. I rode hers up a good sized gravel hill and it made it in 3rd gear. the DRZ and the KLX are the SAME bike, they merged companies not too long ago

Yeah, I knew the DRZ and KLX were one in the same. I also had her go to the Kawi shop and sit on the KLX version. She likes it and the sales guy (who I bought my KX from) assured me that there will be plenty of power for her. He also mentioned I'd have a blast on it too! Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone had any real experience with one. I showed my wife the TTR, but she doesn't like blue. Go figure.
CMott, how long has your wife been riding? Was the ttr her first dirt bike? How well is she able to keep up on the trails? Any pointers or words of wisdom before I open this door? I sure would hate for this door to hit me in the a$$! :scream:

Yes it was her first bike, and I think it will be her last too. She just isnt into it. She/We burned maybe one tank of gas since new. Maybe 4 rides last year about 20 minutes each and only one ride this year. I think I will put some higher bars and buy some stiffer springs and I will use it for a camping/trail bike.
She use to have a 4 wheeler that she rode alot before I met her. She lend it to a friend and he destroyed it. So she didnt have anything to ride. She wanted to do the things that I like to do so we decided to get her a bike. I would have bought her another 4 wheeler but she wanted the same as what I had (motorcycle).
Now she wants a Jet ski

I rode a DRZ125 (small wheel) last weekend and was impressed. Apart from being way too small (btw, I'm 5'3", but prefer my KDX height), I quite liked it. I don't think power would be too much of an issue when learning. The kid whose bike it was did fine on it, riding with the guys (no idea where they went, but knowing them everywhere).
As for words of wisdom, the only thing I can think of is get something your wife is comfortable with, be prepared to buy her another in short order after she's outgrown the first bike and she takes to it. Have lots of patience, compliment her on her improvement, don't expect miracles and have fun. After you've taught her the basics, maybe find someone else for her to ride with - it does make a difference. I'm more prepared to ride with other males than my husband, just I don't feel so intimidated by them. I also would rather ride with other females though.
Oh, and get her all the safety gear you can, especially a rehydrating system.
Good luck with your endeavours & feel free to email me and check out the women's forum.
