Hi:
I am interested in purchasing a bike for trail riding as a beginner but also with room enough to grow into for faster riding as I improve. At 5' 8 1/2", 168 lbs., either the XR400 or KLX300 appeal to me after exhaustive research into which bike would be best for me.
I was wondering if you all have any opinions as to which bike might be better based on your exeriences, what you have heard from others, and the reputation of both bikes. WRs and DRZs are just too 'tall' for me but these two, XR400 and KLX300, seem just right in terms of 'fit', comfort, cost, and features.
Also, does the liquid cooling system in the KLX300 ascribe any benefits to it or make it a more desirable purchase than an air-cooled engine machine like the XR400?
Any input you all could give me is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Again!

The KLX is better suspended, has better eronomics and ithe bike of choice for short riders. The KLX is a bit mor modern and the liquid cooling keeps the power consistent. There are plenty of shops that know how to make the KLX faster and there are free mods you can do to perk the bike up. The XR is a fine trail bike and is the king of tight nasty slippery conditions, but it is getting a bit dated. The only true bug on the KLX is it's sometimes finicky starting. I have owned 3 of them and would not hesitate to buy another, but right now I am in a KTM phase. Here is the link to the KLX owners group, you can get all of your questions answered there:

Please do a search. The KLX and the XR have definately been discussed enough for you to find a lot of information. Then you can post more specific questions.
