fork oil level gauge necessary?

Is a fork oil level gauge really necessary when adding oil to forks? I just changed the oil on my KDX forks and I was just wondering if it is just ok to measure out the specified amount of oil and just pour it in? I know it may not be as accurate, but will I really notice a difference?

It depends on how much of the oil fluid you didnt manage to remove-if you had a reasonable amount your fork level will be higher and so may not use all the travel.Just pour the oil in a set the airgap using a ruler.Dont forget to pump the damper rod 5-6 times and fillt he fork to the brim before removed the oil to get the correct airgap.

A gauge makes it easier but it’s not necessary. I take a long zip tie and run it through a second zip tie so it forms a “T” shape. You then set it on the top of the fork tube and let the long zip tie go into the oil. The little notches on the tie will catch oil and when you pull it out it’s easy to measure to. You may have to trim both of the zip ties to get it to fit but once you do it works real nice.

Good idea RM_guy.

I use the ruler method, If I want 90mm of oil I insert a ruler until it's 100mm into the tube(when held vertical) and expect to see 10mm of oil on the ruler.

Ok thanks guys, I think I will go for the ruler trick.

Take the top off of some kind of squirt bottle , 409 or windex style etc.

Cut the tube to the oil level you want and then set the top down on your fork and pump out the extra oil.

I measure mine identical to Wakisashi exept use a squeeze bottle. Very quick, easy and accurate. I'll have to give the squirt bottle routine a go though, sounds easier yet!

the easiest way is using a turkey baster or syringe with a straw attached to it. if u want 4 " mark the straw at 4" put that mark on the top of the tube.draw fluid till it stops drawing ....ur at 4 "

I use a chopstick zip tied to a tube which leads into a syringe. Easy and cheap.

I use the mity vac brake bleeder set up with a small brass tube measured with the hieght marked on it. I personally dont like the turkey baster only becasue the one I have the end of it is so big quite a bit glugs out when I think I have the right height.

A buddy of mine uses the ESP tool-set for all his bike maintenance. On his identical to mine '00 300 EXC, he has cleaned the air filter ONCE! His sprockets are all hooked, booth fork seals leak, NEVER changed the gear oil. Everytime he rides with us I tell him that I WON'T tow him out of the bush WHEN (not if) he breaks down. Sad really.
