I will be buying a new bike here in the next month or so, I need to know what to get. I have never owned a dirt bike, I have riden a little, but really want to get into it. I will do mostly recreational track riding, I know I want to go with a 250, but what make makes the best 250, Kaw, Honda, Suz, Yam? Most likely buying brand new 2003 model. My brother just bought a 2003 CR250 yesturday, I've always been a Kawasaki guy (street though). Help me make my desision. Pros & cons will help.

I am partial to RM's. Have always ridden and really had no major problems. There are some articles out about the new '03 KX250. Looks like a pretty sharp bike. Any way you go with a new bike can't be wrong. Any of the new 250's will more than enough for you to ride. Don't forget to buy a good helmet and boots, along with all of the other riding apparel. Ride safe and have fun.

in the july issue of MXA they check out the 03 kx and yz bikes, and the KX is completely redone. new subframe, swingarm, engine, fork design, EVERYTHING. i am not trying to start a brand war but the kx's have always been great in the handling department, and with the new steeper steering head or whatever it might be improved even better. also with the new motor work they will be more powerful. i would say get the kx (03) because of they completely redid the whole bike. also those new plastics/graphics are nice too
like i said, i am not starting a brand war but the new kx's seem like they can start kickin' can on some of the 'unchanged' bikes!

All of the companies make powerful quality bikes these days. Go to a local dealer and sit on the bikes. Decide which feels the most comfortable and which color you like the most

Go orange!!!

With your riding experience close your eyes and pick one. Until you get really good (and I'm talking about seeing you lined up in the gate on Sunday) its hard to tell the sublte differences in each brand. It is not until you start to mod your bike that bigger differences will start to show up. Stock off the floor they are pretty close. Honda and Yamaha spend a little more money in the technology department and Suzuki and Kawa are combining their efforts so any color should be good for you. Don't go by the magazines they tend to be partial to who spends the most money on advertising with them. Do your own research and see which bike feels better to you. If you are comfortable on YOUR bike you will have more fun.

Do what YZeater says- go to a couple of dealers and sit on them( possibly test them) and choose the one you feel most comfortable on. My suggestion would be to go KX or YZ

what color do you like? get that one

I agree with Gnarley. The KX and YZ have been known to be a little more user friendly for beginners.

When I was getting into mx after 14 years off, I chose to buy a used 250 in excel condition. I paid $3300. I wanted to find out if I 'd still like riding enough before buying a $6k toy. Seven months later I sold my used 250 for $3000 and bought a new 02 YZ250. After riding for several months including some time on injury reserve, I could really appreciate the upgrade to my new bike. Plus, as I was a better rider, I crashed less often. Just my experience.

Find the best dealer in your area and go with his brand. The YZ, CR, RM, KX, & SX are all good bikes. Pick the best local dealer.
