03 KX250 for trail riding.

Hi I have just been reading the other threads about using KX`s as trail bikes in woods etc. So heres my question.... Me and my friend are going to be buying trail bikes, he wants a four stroke (like a Suzuki DRZ400) but I would like a two stroke. I am not too keen on the KDX so I would like a KX. Has anyone actually put one of these on the road legally and when you tame the motor down do you need to maintain them as much as when they are fire breathing monsters? I understand that it wont be as easy to maintain as the 4 strokes and probably not as economical on fuel but I just prefer the 2 strokers!
Any advice is welcome.
