50cc for my 4YO, which one?

I'll be looking to get my "big" guy a 50cc machine in the next few months and wanted your opinions on them. I am looking for a reliable machine that will have a throttle limiter on it and be easy for him to ride. I think minimal gear shifting, or an automatic will be fine. I need to start him really slow. What have been your experiences. PS, I am going to be looking for a USED bike in the $600 range.

I feel the best bike in your price range would be a PW50. They are short, have a throttle limiter, and a limiter in the exhaust. No shifting. Plus parts are cheap as the design has been the same since 82. The JR50 is another great bike. it has only one speed originally but with grinding off a tab you can upgrade to two speeds. it also has neutral.
The Pw's are more plentiful. you should easily find one in your price range a few years old. Also if you will be needing training wheels gimme a shout. Don't buy the ones that bolt on to the shocks. you want the wide one that bolts to the frame. I can shoot you quick directions on how to build them for about $20.

"and a limiter in the exhaust"

What is that? Is it an exhaust plug that limits the power?

The PW50 is THE choice. Hold their value really well, have the throttle limiter (a screw at the housing on the bars) AND the exhaust limiter (washer in the head pipe at the exhaust port for those little guys with a screwdriver). PLUS low exhaust pipe AND shaft drive to keep little fingers where they belong.

PW50, XR50 or Z50. They're all good, reliable bikes.

Husky has several 50cc models 2 of which would work.

he mentioned a $600 limit to price. I don't think you would find a husky in that price range. I do like the husky. Also the new KTM air cooled oil injected bike is really nice but its $1499

You could easily find a Pw for $600 maybe a xr50 beater, and probably a z50 from mid eightees to early nineties.

Do the XR's usually go for more? It sounds like most any of them will do the job. Also no one has mentioned the JR50. Is that one OK? Do all of these bikes have throttle limiters on them?

The XR's usually go for more because they are being used for pit bikes and also a new fad is adults racing the XR-50's which has increased the resale value. Yes all of the PW's, JR's and XR's have a throttle limiter and as Patman mentioned the PW also has a washer in the head pipe which restricts the power which when removed makes you think you have a new bike because of the difference in power.

Good luck with your search. I think $800 might be what you'll end up paying for a used PW50, hope I'm wrong. They're hard to come by. Folks buy 'em and keep 'em. At least here, anyway.

And be sure to write a report when he gets his first ride! I'm anxiously waiting that day. Mine's 3 and counting.

I have seen a bunch of the Pw's on ebay. Usually someone that bought it for their kid and the kid didn't like it. Max is usually abou $800 plus about $75 for shipping.

I kinda learned how to ride a old Z50 but my first real bike was a 85 JR 50. I started ridding it when I was 4. The JR has a throttle limiter along with a engine restrictor and a restrictor in the exhaust. In this state its very mild then once he advances you can remove them. My parents got me it cause you can raise the rear shocks and the seat and give the bike like 1 more inches in seat height. I don't think you can do that with the PW. I also like the fact the JR and Z50's have rear brake pedals like a bigger bike the PW doesn't. The only thing that sucks about it is that it is chain drive which could be considered alittle unsafe but I never had a problem. I think the JR and PW are the best choices cause the a Z50/ XR 50 might be too heavy. Before I could even get the bike my parents made it a point that I had to be able to pick it up myself. The JR and PW weight like 80- 85 lbs and the Z/XR 50 is like 110. Some kids find the PW awkward to start cause the kick starter is on the left. Short little ones find the Z/XR 50 too big. JR & Z 50's are the same from the late 70's till new and the PW was/is still the same from 81 till new.

Thanks MX. That was very informative. I didn't know all that.

Mike he is 4 years old and you're not thinking 125???
J/K sent you some jo with info in it, He has a 94 ZR50 and might work on that price. Him and I are good friends and he takes GOOD care of his toys. Was Aryn's baseball coach and his son has outgrown it. Let me know, maybe the next time we (you & I) ride I'll bring it up and "LIL Mike" can give it a go.

Ya, I was trying to get him on my 125, but you know, I think he might actually be a little small for it.. My calculations say he will be able to go somewhere in the neighborhood of 136mph because of his weight...

So I think, I'll have to get him a 50.
