I was wanting to buy a four stroke over the two stroke because of fuel cost and less maintenance.I rode 25 years ago and remember the four strokes being honda xrs as never having to work on them.I dont race but want to get a four stroke motocrosser so my son that races could also try it out on a few races.I am getting more confused the more I read on what to buy for the motocross four stroke.Honda as having head gasket and cam problems, yamaha costing your next mortgage payment for parts, and ktm.please give me some opinions and why to help me make up my mind or maybe I should just go back to a two stroke. Thanks

there crf450 is only 2 years old(i think, and i never heard of any big problems, pretty damn good(airbox)) If there is honda will fix it. I hear problems with the yammys cranshats I beleive. (there was a post on it but I cant find it!!) The xrs are bullet proof but no motoctossers. Your best bet is yzf250 or crf450. Honda 259 wont be out fro antother year or more. Ps, i think 4 strokes are same amount of mantinece, just a diffrent kind. I get about 3 hours on a tank. With a clark oversize i bet i could got 4-5 hours.
(also depends on ur riding syle) I think the 4 stroke motorcrossers burn gas just as fast due to them being racing bikes.
I found it !

If you really want to go four-stroke i would go with the crf450, but i think the you should consider getting a two-stroke. Look YZ,KX,CR,RM 250. they are great race bikes but you can just trai ride on them too. Also, 2 strokes and 4 strokes both apply just about the same amount of maintaning---its depends how you ride

KTM SX would be an excellent bike for you, they really aren't that expensive when you look at the quality of workmanship and components. I have had excellent reliability results with my 125SX. I personally don't know of any KTM rider ever switching back to one of the Japanese brands. You might see if local riders will let you ride their bikes get a better feel for what might fit your needs better. Good luck!

Thanks all for responding.A guy at the local shop here in Indy said that crf450 had alot of problems with cam and head gasket so I was afraid of it and yamaha cost so much for parts and had some problems also but wanted to see if anyone else had heard any of these things.Well thanks for the info.
