My son used to race a ktm pro sr, but decided racing was not his deal. Now after months of not riding he wants a play bike. We ride at local mx tracks, but he has no interest in racing. We're looking at xr70, ttr90, klx110. Most likely pick up a used bike no more than two years old unless we go for the klx. My son has ridden an xr70 and his biggest complaint was the bottoming out over every jump - I'm sure that will be problem no matter which of these bikes we get, but he does not want a kx65. Kids- who knows how their minds work. Do any of you have experience with these three bikes?

My son is 9 yrs old and I purchased the KLX 110 (2002) The bike has more power than he can handle right now As a matter of fact I have put the throttle limit screw in untill he becomes more skilled. The suspension is good.starts easy and not to tall. I understand Kawasaki has made some changes for 2003
but I do not know what they are. I wanted to get him a bike that would last more than 2 yrs and this one seems to be fine.
Good Luck with your search.

I got the KLX 110 for my 8-year-old. He's not big for his age and this was his first bike. We mainly trail ride, but we take it to the track to run practice laps every now and then (my kid doesn't jump yet).

While I can't give you advice regarding your specific question (i.e., whether the bike bottoms out on jumps), I can say that we love the bike. Also, I've ridden it around the pee wee track (no jumping) and it doesn't bottom out on whoops and such (I weigh about 200 LBS.).

Also, I've heard that the bike can be modified as kids progress (I think this is mainly w/r/t the engine and transmission as opposed to the suspension).
