6'8" 235lbs. Getting back into sport after 15 yr layoff. Lots of exp on quads but consider myself a "strong beginner" on 2 wheels. Mainly fireroads, jeep trails, day trips into the mountains. Occasionally open single track. 60% dirt 40% rural paved roads. Seeing used XR650R's with dirt designs kits very reasonably priced 2001's with pipe, power up kit, computer, the works $3800.00. I cant find a DRZ-E for that price. In the end though, I want the best bike even if I have to spend a bit more. Opinions???

Thanks for looking!

First off, what do you mean by duel-sporting? Neither bike is street legal in most states lacking turn signals and road/light terrain tires. If it's ease of starting you want go with the DRZ-E. But all things considered your height is definatley a factor. As a rider just getting back into the sport myself I would go with the XR. Granted it weighs in around 270+ lbs but seat height and suspention are big factors. Ask around to some of the more experianced riders and you will get more indepth advice.

My two peices of copper.

Happy Trails,
Phillip

It would have to be street legal. I would do a DRZ400S or add a Baja Design kit to a DRZ400E or XR650R to get dual filament headlamp, turn signals, horn, stop lamp, etc. I want to avoid trailering the bike. Just take off from the house hit the paved roads until I find a dirt path that makes me curious..

I have been very happy with my 650r. It always fires by the second kick unless I have laid it over and then it is just a matter of a simple clearing drill, so dont let the lack of electric start hinder you (don't get me wrong, It would be nice). I dont have much experience with the DRZ but I can tell you that the XR has all the power you would need road or trail. It doesnt really feel that heavy once you get going either...
I am fortunate...I manage to get mine to pass dual sport inspection by simply putting a resitor inline to my tail light and adding a hydrolic brake switch.

With the mod's you mentioned and another 650 owner chiming in. About all I have to say is go for it! I doubt you will ever out grow it!
