I just bought a 1993 XR100 for my nine year-old son. If my big chief approves it (my wife) I would soon purchase a 2001 XR400 for myself. I have not ridden anything since almost ten years, and I don’t know what tools should I buy for regular maintenance and simple repair works. :silly:
Any comments/advice is welcome.
Thanks,
Luis

The following are must haves:
Metric socket set with the largest socket being at least 24 mm for axles.
Torque wrench (cheaper model with the bar and scale will do.
Metric wrench set 8-19 mm
Vice grip
Metric allen wrench tool (bicycle tools work well)
Tire irons 2 minimum
Tub-O-Grease
Spray filter cleaner
Filter oil
Chain wax (my preference)
Other screwdrivers, pliers, and implements of destruction you already have.
Lots of Zip Ties
That should cover most of the every day stuff.

NoToil filter maintenance kits make cleaning your air filters a breeze. It's the only brand that'll allow you to toss the dirty filter in the washing machine for easy cleaning (the stuff's biodegradable!).
The only other thing I can add to the above list is to simplify it maybe? If you don't have any tools at all, that's a lot of dough to fork over all at once. I started off with a relatively inexpensive socket set that went from 6-13 mm, and also had a few allen heads & standard & phillips screwdrivers. Then I just bought a separate 22mm wrench for the axle as well as a medium sized crescent wrench for misc. jobs. Your son's bike may also need a deep plug wrench for changing spark plugs. You'll also want a funnel for oil changes, as you should be doing those on a regular basis. Cutting paper plates into funnels gets old after a while. That got me through a year of basic maintenance.
One last thing to add maybe is a tube of blue loctite. And ditto the tob o' grease. Slather it on everything that moves such as rear brake pivot, lever pivots, kick-starter, axles, swingarm pivot, linkage, etc.

All the above that tigerowner and zio mentioned plus don't forget a spoke wrench(if you don't get one with your bike). Just my opinion but I hate the bar and scale torque wrenches, do yourself a favor and buy a decent one.

Sparkplug wrench.

You can get by without a torque wrench for now, especially with the XR's.
I alwys use a 8 in cresent for plugs, but that won't work with the xr100. You need the wrench that came in the original kit or a deepwell to get at it.
Keep em oiled, adjusted, and cleaned and the XR's are almost indestructable.
I'm curious if you have gotten Jr. safety gear? It is WAY more important than any wrench in the box. Helmet and boots at a minimum. Even if you have to get him some K-mart Texas Steers to start out, don't let him ride in tennis shoes.

Many thanks for your input. I will buy all this nice toys as the budget allows.
Regarding to protective gear ... YES! my son has everything. My wife was his advisor on selecting his gear, so that everything had to be red, gray and black. By now he looks great with all his gear on, while watching motocross on the TV. Boys are great! They really enjoy everything!
Thanks again.
