Having problems with front forks being too soft. '01 xr400, about 195lb rider. Mostly woods but I like to go to the track as well. Ive had the forks revalved (gold valves) and resprung(.44kg). I had the guy who did the suspension work revalve a second time to make them stiffer. I still bottom out the forks when I go to the track. Nothing too high airwise, but I really feel limited by them(bottoming hurts).
So the question is what would you recommend? I havent messed with the oil level. Had the compression dialed all the way in to no avail. Could a stiffer spring (.46?) make a difference?
Ive been considering making an attempt on setting up some CR forks but that seems like a serious task.
Could a shock thats too stiff cause the forks to bottom or seem too soft?
thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Those XR forks seem real soft when you put in 5 wt esp if your a larger mammal . The springs sound in the ballpark for you in the front for dual purpose riding . When the fellow set up the gold valves did he set them for soft preference or prefer stiff . Heavy 4strokes respond well to stiffening the forks . I have worked on quiye a few of these XRs but never put gold valves we usually only installed them on bikes we wanted to make softer or plusher . The 400 felt too soft stock except for maybe riding rocks . Stock the front end felt vague and loose . If you have a 400 with an overly stiff shock it will make the front end dive and it always seemed that on that bike the rear end was pretty high stock. I think first you should try to check/increse your oil level esp if the forks feel good but only bother you when they bottom out, Also if it feels as though there is no response from your comp adjuster ther could be other problems like the valving is too soft overall or there is an important part on XR forks where tou need to reference the damper rod to the retaining nut on the fork cap if that is not set properly youl;l have no adjustment . Its all in the Honda manual maybe you have it or could borrow one from the local shop . Look for the part where you have likt 17 mms or so of threads showing past the nut on the end of the retaining rod, there should be a picture . I would send it to you but my bike repair skills are much better trhan my computer skills and dont treally have that much experience with pics to posts yet . HOPE THIS HELPS GOOD LUCK DEAN

thanks for the advice. The oil level was set at what the manual recommends...cant remember if it was 130 mm or what? But, what kind of increments would you recommend adding oil by to see if it helps?

10 or 20 mms ?
