wanting to hear from S. America riders

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

there's got to be a few yankees bashing around on two wheels down here other than me! I'd like to hear from others and share experiences.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

S America is a big place.... where is you?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

I'm in Paraguay which is just west of lower Brazil. The summer here is 6 months long and hot as Arizona. I super love to ride but sometimes I just can't get out there when it's so hot. Everyone talks up protective gear but you'd die from heat stroke if you had much on here. Right now it's "winter" and nice weather so I get out when I can but I'm getting a bit bored with what's available since there isn't much dirt biking here and the best you can do is find some good cow trails to ride on. I'm a low-profile kind of guy normally and I dislike how everyone looks at you like you're racing the Baja 1000, like they've never seen anyone blasting the dirt trails just for fun. I have to fight feeling guilty also since there are so many dirt poor people here. But I do help out my latino friends and do give to the poor on the streets. Last year there was a group of latinos who went dirt biking every Saturday but they've dispersed since the economy got worse here after 911. They could barely afford to ride before then, but not now. So I just ride alone now unless I give a girlfriend a sight seeing tour. I want to make the 4 hour ride to the Brazil border where there are lots of hills and much more riding areas. Here it's pretty flat with a few hills to abuse. Since parts availability here is very limited it's a good thing I ride a reliable bike. I used to be in Costa Rica. Man, that red clay all over the place was really a challenge when wet since it's so slick. I used to ride on the mountains near San Jose. It was really very scenic and the temperature was slightly cold up there when the sun wasn't shining. There were more dirt bikers there than here. But I was getting really bored with the same main two trails after 2 years.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Hi Jag..... thanks for the quick report. Sounds like you enjoy it in Paraguay, I assume Asuncion? The closest I have come to Paraguay was in the 3-country corner near Iguacu falls...back in 1982.... You work there for a US company? I used to travel a lot all over Latin America, but my favorite places still are Buenos Aires and Mexico City. I also remember Costa Rica well, the switzerland of Central America; and of course the pretty "ticas". But the only place that I had a chance to ride was in Lima (Peru) specificaly on he dunes near the Pacific ocean (see my picture gallery).
I had contact with a couple of DRN members in Argentina, but lost that contact. We love to hear from more members in S. America......as well as other part of the world.

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Yeah, Asuncion.
I've heard there is a much higher percentage of riders in Brazil and Argentina than here. I'd like to try out Argentina but it's such a disaster now with the bad economy. The "Ticas" sure were pretty but kind of snobbish. Every gringo I knew that was married to a latina was married to someone from another country other than Costa Rica. The women here are friendlier but the classy ones are also snobbish.
I'll bet you were itching to get up in the mountains in Peru.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Jag.... I hate to use an old phrase, but back in the seventies atttitudes were very different in most places. Ten years of frequent travel south of the border, was the best time of my life.... until I got married and could no longer do 6-week trips, only 3-week trips!... I hope to get down there again and do some riding wherever I can find a soulmate.
I had a KDX in 99 but switched to pure MX in 2000... I hope you'll find some soulmates to ride with... I bet there are still no restrictions on dirtbikes in your area? ref noise and 2smoke?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Restrictions? are you kidding?
The best thing about being down here is that it's like being back in the wild west. (well, not so good if the bad guys catch up to you and you left your pistol at home). There are no regulations doncerning dirt biking because its almost non-existant. If you are caught riding a dirt bike on the street then you just slip the officer $15 and go on your merry way.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Hey Jag.... are you part of a club in Asuncion? any contact with organizaitons in your neighboring countries?.... any websites ?
I poked around one from Uruguay....it seemed to be connected to a French site...

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

The only dirt club I know about here is for MX, which I'm too old for.
Hey, I found someone to go riding with. He just bought a used DR 350 and wants to see the few riding spots I know of. Seems like a good kid so I'll show him around and test out his riding skills. Last time I showed someone one of my riding areas he almost fainted with heat stroke. He had been working in a lightly air conditioned building and I never use air conditioning. Afterwards he called me "the assasin". He's still my friend although he gave up dirt riding.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

too old for MX?... thirtysomething?...
no A/C? you probably never use heating in the tropics either, right?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

I'm kinda still a teenager at heart and people say I look 35 but I'm 44 !
I think being a bit wild and riding every weekend helps keep me young. But when I do a lap on the MX track I am beat after 1 lap! But the track is compacted (not spread out) with a bunch of tight turns and LOTS of freaking jumps which I hate.
Actually it gets pretty cold here sometimes and I sleep with an electric heater on when it's like that.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Jag... have you traveled outside Paraguay? made any contacts in Brazil or Argentina? there are websites devoted to dirtbikes MX and enduro: www.motox.com.br www.motorsport.com.br I have chatted on line with Milton Caputti who is part of the organizers of www.mxargentina.com.ar

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

A hello from Brazil...

Anyone coming here? You're right when you say dirt riding is more spreaded here. There are thousands of riders in Southeast Brazil...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

boa tarde... Porto Alegre?
glad to have you on board..... in your first month over 40 posts: that's like getting the holeshot!

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Boa Tarde Pokie...

No, I'm actually in São Paulo... Have you been to POA?

Let me tell you a secret... I had a YZ 125 some time ago, and I joined the DRN in 1999 or something (The Rider from BRAZIL was my 'name')... The problem is that I moved into road riding (ZX9-R) and kind off left the dirt for a while. After I found out the lack of fun in the asphalt, I tried to come back... But I forgot the password, and changed my email... So, I had to restart all over again... From that time, I have already had a KX 125 and a KDX 250. Now I'm riding yellow.

My sister lives in Chicago... I've been there 4 or 5 times... Is this a small world or what?

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

well, Chicagoland is the virtual home of DRN; you are welcome to visit anytime, ride with the local crew; you may also want to visit your sister while you're here...
have been to POA only 4 or 5 times but have been to SaoPaulo many, many times..... with a side trip or two down to Guaruja during Carnaval (otimo!) many many years ago, about the time that you were born! puxa vida! Have not been there in about 3 years and don't know when I'll make it there again, but I will......
did you ever race? MX or Road?... asphalt is too "dangerous" for me, too many incompetent car drivers.
good to hear from you after your "asphalt interlude"
Pokie

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

I found out the asphalt to be very, very hard... I'm done with that thing...

I'm just starting (too old?) to train in the local track here to start competing in MX... I've been mostly a woods rider for a long time (more than 10 years), and the track is very different... Let's see what happens... Last sunday, I almost died trying to clear a double... 8-D

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

RGalesi.....8-D... size or race #?.... too old at 29?

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Well... Ya'know... I kind off think I'll never be able to catch up with those little demons that came out from the 80s... Sometimes I have the guts to try the doubles. Triples? Don't even think about it... Maybe I'm too old to not think in the consequences of not clearing a huge jump.

But that's fine... As soon as I can stand the 20+ minutes of a race, I'll start competing, just to make fun out of it... Carmichael better watch his back! I'M COMING!

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

hey Rider from Brazil
do ya'll let us Paraguayans travel into your country with our vehicles?(in this case my trail bike that's street legal)
I heard the answer to that is NO since Brazil manufactures a lot of cars and motorcycles, but I'd like to hear other opinions.
Riding here is kinda boring. If I ever get out of this financial slump then I may move to Brazil. I love trail riding in mountains. such a beautiful country, Brazil. Any suggestions on a good small (<1million people) city in the southern portion with lots of good trail riding nearby?

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Hey Jaguar,

There's no problem if you want to cross the border riding, if your bike (or car, or whatever) is street legal. THe only thing to remeber, though, is that it must be street legal under Brazil's law. That means that besides the license plate (and your personal driver's license), DOT approved tires, head and tail lights, your bike will need: horn, speedometer and turn lights. It won't hurt ask some questions to the Feds in the border, prior to coming here, in order to avoid any eventual problems.

There are HUNDREDS of cities like these in the SE. Anything in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Minas Gerais will give what you want...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Several Latin nations participated, but Brazil decided to go to Europe for the postponed MXdesNations... at WorldCup Latins placed 7 (Costa Rica), 10 (Chile), 12 Argentina and 14 deadlast..(Bolivia). Many did not have their "A" team available.... except Chile with Jeremy Israel placing 17 and 19 out of 37. Not bad. Luis Correa of Argentina placed 25 and 27th.
Going to MXdNations: Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Venezuela. None of the Australasian countries are going to Spain... nor are the US and Canada.
These nations are to be commended for competing on the world scene.

Next year we hope to have two or three dirtriders from south of the border participating in DIRTWEEK '03! .........Milton Caputti (mxargentina.com.ar) me escuchas?

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Pokie,

What is this DirtWeek all about? I couldn't have my bike shipped to US...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/fo...p?s=&forumid=23

read all about it in the DirtWeek thread..... I bet we could get a bike for you to ride if you fly here and bring your riding gear....

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

RGalesi.... did you peruse the pictures and threads about DIRTWEEK?
the next one is only 11 months away...... my guess is that we'll have a few members from overseas next year.....

Posted by: BSWIFT---------------------

RGalisi, if you make it to DW03 you WILL have a bike or two to ride. I will see to it personally.

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Guys,

I tell you what: I'm starting to get excited about this. Any idea where the DW03 will take place?

I could do one of Brazil's famous b-bcues, besides crashing many times with someone else's bike...

Tell me more...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

The next one will again be at Cooperland near Stillwater, Oklahoma and again early October. Details will be published early 2003....
Bringing some Brazilian recipes would be a great idea; eating is always plenty and varied. Especially now that Brazilian cooking is being introduced in the US under the 'rodizio' concept, curiosity will be alive and acute; maybe some 'feijoado'?....
Cooperland will be expanding to provide more room for the woods/enduro types. The main MX track will be modified to be more "spode-friendly", but still challenging for the A-class types....
Tell us about the type of riding you do? (MX or woods?) post some pictures if you can... ate logo

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

I'm more used to ride in the woods, since that's what I've been doing since when I was 15 years old. I just started in MX, let's say 8 months ago, but never raced so far. The point is that I can't stand 30 minutes in MX's pace... Still working on that...

I have a free ticket (frequent flyer program), so I better issue it to Oklahoma City, is that right?

Can't believe you guys have rodizio in US right now... Is it popular? It is probably very expensive, isn't?

Até...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

don't worry about MX Vs Woods riding.... the majority of our members are woods guys, but once a year some will compete for fun in the DRN MX races (see the Race Results thread..... "MX for Bikes With Lights"..... ) MX races are less than 20 minutes; no serious racing! at least that's what we all say.....

You may want to fly through Chicago and visit your sister (hint!!!), but the most direct route would be Miami-Oklahoma City.... (United and Varig have non-stops to Chicago from SaoPaulo, 11 hours, I have done it a few times...American flies direct from Chicago to OKC, United routes you through Denver)
hey man, this is early planning!!!
Rodizio: the chain is just starting in the Chicago area; I have not tried it yet...
dont know if they are elsewhere, but I would assume they already are in NY and Calif.
ate' logo..

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Hey Jag.... Hey RGalesi...... did the earth swallow you up?.... riding in the heat of the summer down there? we miss y'all

Posted by: RGalesi---------------------

Big Mother Earth did try to swallow me a couple of times, but I'm still fighting...

Everything's up to the DRN week? I'm trying to convince some of my fellow buddy riders to come along with me...

Tchau.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

that would be ...otimo!.... we'll have a gaucho round-up or rodeo on bikes!

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Yeah man, summer heat, like 110 degrees ! I'm been waiting for rain to go riding but it hasn't in a few weeks so I'll just suit up and catch the last hour of daylight tomorrow on my small mx track. That way I don't die of heat exhaust. Man, these people race in this heat! Some tough dudes.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Hey Jag.... any new riding buddies?... if you ever go to Argentina, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Milton who runs www.mxargentina.com.ar; he lives south of BA about 300 kms, yes along the coast with lots of sand dunes for riding...

we hope to see you and maybe our Brasileiro friend at DW in October?

cheers

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Hey RGalesi.....voce fala muito poco!
Hey Jag...... que pasa!

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

I made the mistake to bring a latino to my MX track. He knew about the crossing but almost caused us to crash anyway. We were riding together on the track (the only way to do it without crossing into each other) and then he took a break and then when he got on the track again it wasn't in front or behind me and I almost crashed into him. Man, latinos are really nice dudes but thinking caps weren't given to them when the storks flew them oout of heaven!!! Sorry but it's the truth. Why else are all latino countries poor?
Anyway now I just ride there alone. I'm practicing there and at the official MX track to be able to race in the "trail" bike category. I did it last December and it was fun. We did just 5 laps since most of us were out of shape. Well, I was just sick but got 5th place out of 11 guys anyway. I'll be in a lot better condition this next time and hope to place better.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

we thought you and Galesi were sidetracked by the 'carnaval' , and we're looking for pics of you two in the samba parade...
hey, congrats! placing in the first half of the pack is great; it's not always about winning, although it would be nice to win!

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Well I think a good day at the races is better than dealing with 50,000 people at Carnaval. Anyway here's a shot of me and the guys at the starting line:

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

where was this ? near Asuncion or Iguazu Falls?

what is typical length of your races, in terms of time?

any new race coming up soon?

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Jag.....where are you?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

I'm here in Asuncion, Paraguay (next to Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia).

I've been waiting for another MX race to get my revenge (since I just got 5th place last time) and finally they're having another one in a week but I fell on a sandy street 2 weeks ago and my hands still hurt. diablos!

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

so Jag.... what happened in this race, did you take revenge?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

No, life is taking revenge on me. ha!
First my transmission was making a groaning noise because of a bearing going bad. So waiting for parts and the rebuild I didn't practice for a month. Then when it was repaired I fell in a street corner that had a lot of sand and hurt both my hands and they still hurt now, so there went another month without practicing. So the race is this coming Sunday and I will just be a spectator. But the MX club is building a new track and will hold a race on it the 29th. BUT my durn transmission is making the sounds again! Oh well, I don't really like racing in the cold. thanks for asking

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

So Jag, your bike back in one piece?

did you race any more this 'winter'?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

hi Pokie
after the second bearing replacement I figured out that a small oil leak was letting the level get too low sometimes which would starve the bearing for oil.
Anyway I've raced twice. 2nd place and a DNF at the new track.
And I'm racing tomorrow at the old track and hope to get my revenge on the guy who got first place when I got 2nd. He's the champion of a big border town and I hope to put him in his place this time.
I got a DNF last time from crashing. There was a badly designed double with a short run at it. Someone bumped me over in the 3rd turn and when I got going again I was last so I was looking for any advantage to catch up and so I tried the jump (instead of taking a slow muddy path around it) for the first time and hit hard on the landing (hitting the face of it) and then kissed dirt. My foot hurt for 2 weeks afterwards. The club is going to make it a tabletop jump.
When I got 2nd I holeshot both motos! Man that was so exhilerating. I've had fun tinkering a lot with the engine (porting, carb, etc) to get it run good since it was somewhat detuned for street use.
I'll let you know how the race goes tomorrow.
:-)

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Jag... did you get your revenge?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Yes and No.
The guy that won last time blew his engine right away this time (Lord knows how much "porting", etc he has) so I didn't get to race against him.
The first moto I got the holeshot and left them all in my dust. After 5 laps the closest guy was about a half lap behind.
The second moto I didn't clean my starting groove (as it had a lot of powder and clods in it) and got a bad start and then in the first turn which is sandy a rookie stalled out and I had to stop and everyone got by us. So then I had to pass everyone and by the end of the 5 lap race I was only a turn away from the leader. And he was the one who got second the first moto, so his 2-1 score topped my 1-2 score. That's OK though since it was apparent I was the fastest rider. One thing I like about this class is that the guys aren't snobbish towards each other since generally they're there just for fun and to test themselves. On the podium we were talking to each other, laughing, and what-not. Its like that with the seniors also.(I'm a "senior" but don't race with them 'cause I don't have a pure race bike). So its OK. I had a blast since I was in shape for it (but not by much). I did some nose dives from a low inclination jump with a lip on it and I finally figured out it was probably due to the rear compression being set too hard. (I set it that way before when I was landing from a big jump onto a wallowed out spot so that it wouldn't bottom out so hard). So hopefully next time I won't be scaring myself with the occassional nose dive.
By the way this enduro class is the biggest one at these races. There were 14 guys lined up in the first moto. Some classes only have 2 - 3 people! small poor country.

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

well, that sounds really great! nose-diving and/or endo-ing sounds familiar... hahaha

was this an MX or enduro race? how long is the circuit?

Are you racing for points or just "bragging rights"? Only locals race with you? any Brazilians or Uruguayans or even Argentineans?

You should be part of our "A" class at Dirtweek?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Its an MX race. the course isn't long as it only has 7 turns. Buts its kinda like supercross since theres 10 jumps on it.
Yeah, mostly bragging rights. I had to undo the misconception amongst the racers here that enduro riders were just fluff.
Occassionally someone from a neighbor country will race in Paraguay but not often.
Yeah I guess I'm acumulating points also since I've got two 2nd places in 4 races of the championship series. But I'm not seriously pursuing to win the class. I'll probably just race on the old track since the new one still doesn't have good turns and it has that leap-of-death jump that I crashed on. So I'll race about once a month. So I can slouch for 2 weeks and then train for 2 weeks before each race.
Man I'd love to go to Dirtweek but its just a far off dream. Things like that take money which I don't have.
Heck, I ride my bike to the track, take off the mirror and buddy pegs, race, put them back on, then ride home. Economy class!
What kind of riding do you do Pokie?

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

getting 2-1 is damn good! you show them boys how it's done! congrats? is there a picture with a trophy?

I do gentleman's MX....(don't like trees jumping at me).... on a YZ250F.... hang out with all kinds of MX experts and old pros with whom I race vicariously, i.e. on the same track but not necessarily on the same lap... never raced, except at Dirtweek. My ambition is to race at least once in a local AMA district race before I turn 74 (my "race" number). I started riding MX bikes when the suspensions were barely modified from standard road bikes, barely 3 inches of travel. (My dad built motorcycles using Maico engines early 50s.... a few years back)

Where is home when in the US? (forgot if you told us that before).... riding home from down there would really be 'economy class'..... nothing left by the time you reach the US...

'sta luego

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Pokie, I'm from Texas but have lived in Florida and North Carolina also.
I'd post a photo but my scanner is broke.
Are there any great trails there that you ride on?
I prefer woods riding but there isn't any woods here. Maybe I'll move to Uruguay where they have good land for enduros.

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

here's a picture of me (on the right with Answer jersey) when I won 2nd place the time before:

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

hey it's always great to 'podium' even if it says #2.....

I once thought I might ride woods, but the trees get in my way; so I do MX the old-fashioned way when suspensions were only 2 inches.....

getting itchy feet about moving on to another tropical place?.... if you're thinking Argentina, you canhook up with our friend Milton, although he is a MXer since kidhood; he rides mostly sand dunes, he lives on the coast south of BA about 200 miles.... beautiful area, but the economy is something else...

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

So you ride the antiques class (or whatever its called)?
Thats cool. I wish I still had my Penton 125. But I think it had 6 inches travel up front and 4 inches in back. But it handled real good. I hardly ever dumped it. My next dirt bike was a ´79 Husqvarna 125 that had 6 inches front and back. But I had the damping tube in the forks extended 2 inches which helped a lot although it wore the forks out after a couple years. I raced it 10 times then quit because with all the practice, exercise, and working on the bike I never had any free time. Thats when I started exploring the terrain around Fort Hood Texas which was cool as long as I didn´t accidentally wonder into one of the tanks firing ranges.
Post a picture of your bike so I can see what you ride.
later dude

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

sorry for long pause here...... i ride a Jammy 250 4-stroke (first issue), easier to ride than my previous KX250; I had a 1974 KLX Kawi... now deeded to my son-in-law.... on/off road version... which I occasionally get nostalgic for...
of course now is "winter" up here so I'm working on a possible visit down your way (well south of BA actually) in Feb...during your summer heat. May be you should look into the ENDURO DEL VERANO during that time period...
my friend is trying to get me to ride that event..... pucha caramba!

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

so which country is that enduro being held in?

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Argentina...
keep an eye on Milton's website for dates @ www.mxargentina.com.ar

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

JaG.... so, where are you these days? riding somewhere near Asuncion?

The Enduro del Verano in Argentina is Feb 7&8.... Milton had convinced me to come down and ride his new bike...... but I won't be able to as I am about to make a move (household), yes, during the worst of winter!..... only 2 hours northwest towards the Mississippi..... Galena, a small historic town on the Illinois side, across from Dubuque, Iowa....
pucha caramba

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

hi Pokie
yeah I am moving also but just to the other side of town.
hey I was in bed most of yesterday after sweating too much and losing too many electrolytes from practicing motocross in the heat. Well it was the last hour of sunlight so I thought it would be OK but I was wrong. Now I know why theres no motocross here in the hot months (Jan - mid April).
Man I would love to enduro in Argentina. Maybe next year.
later dude!

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Jag....
probably about 90F+?
am trying to figure out when I can get away and bug Milton for a few days in Argentina; may be in April at the end of summer?.... quizas, quizas... some day, companero, we'll connect...

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

usually around 40 degrees celcius. probably closer to 100 degrees farenheit.
of course Argentina is cooler.
so Milton is going to lend you a bike? Ya`ll going up in the hills or gonna hit the dunes (which I hear are very big)?

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

no, mostly sand on the coast of SanClemente ...

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

che, pibe..... where are you?..... que pasa?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

ha! who or what is a pibe?
Well, in case you're talking to me, man things are laying low this year. There was a split between the organizers and the track owners and this year there are no MX events. Well, actually that's OK with me since I just like to ride. You know a real race is a stressful thing both physically and emotionally. Hey, I'm too old for stress. So I am just trying to be faithful and practice every saturday at the main track here. At the end of our practice about 6 of us lined up for a 5 lap race. It was fun and we laughed about what went on afterwards. No ego involved. cool. that's the way I like it. My bike isn't running full potential now since a loose stator plate fried my electronics. Now the black box is "repaired" and I have an ignition coil made for a 6 volt system with points! Hey it keeps me going but I think the spark is weak and I'm not sure if the repair has changed the timing. So I got lucky and found some good used parts to replace the two parts for $26 from EBBAY(mispelled on purpose). Should arrive within 2 weeks. It should run like a bat out of hell again once I get those parts in there.
What's going on with you Pokie? Ever get around to racing an AMA event like you said you wanted to? I say "just do it!"

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

hey Jag... good to "hear" from you and glad that you're still riding frequently. Me, i have been out on the MX track once since I moved to this little historic town (www.galena.org) late February..... too many loose ends and "honey do's".... but plans are laid for more riding, even with local trail types in a couple of weeks. Then in July we have a mini get-together of the regional DRN members south of my town about 90 miles.... other than that we are making preparations for our annual DIRTWEEK (Sep 27-Oct 3).... better than ever, as they say.

Do you have any way of getting up here for a "vacation" in Sept and join us for a few days at Cooperland in Oklahoma? I bet there would be members gladly sharing a KDX with you...

Che Pibe... is Argentine slang for "hey dude", pibe actually means "kid"... remember 'Che Guevara'?... well in the land of the pampas, everyone uses "che" to begin almost any question or statement...

The only "racing" I'll do this year is the C-class at Dirtweek.... the last two years I was organizationally occupied and could not race, but the boss (Okie) said it's ok for me to race if I "really want to"... but I will be in an AMA race before I can;t physically do it anymore and I'm guessing that will about age 74, another 9 years, man! In fact, the group I'm joining in acouple of weeks has one member who still rides at 84; can't wait to meet him.

By the way, that link to the KDX-SR, did you write that?.... I noticed a reference to the DRN forums...... I had a KDX200 (99) when I got back into dirtbiking after 20 years of not touching a motorbike..... which reminds me, I also saw a reference to jeff Fredette in the KDX page: he participated in our very first Dirtweek in 2000 which we held in southern Illinois.... we're trying to get him to join us again. Check the DRN site for details ...

Anyway, glad that you keep your KDX finely tuned and are enjoying the plush ride...

You're 65 and still riding! Man, you rock!
I was once racing at night in Austin Texas and they announced that one of the competitors was 70 years old. I was blown away. The guy was on a really nice CanAm, orange, and he rode good but conservatively. whatever. he was doing it and thats what counts.
I am feeling the stress of motocross myself and would like to kick back and get back into trail riding but I have to travel 5 hours to get to the mountains of Brasil. whatever, I would still like to do it. Just need to find a riding buddy.
Hey, I'm making a new page just about setting up a KDX for motocross. should be up soon. see http://www.geocities.com/a57ngel/moto/MX.html
take care friend

well I finally got to ride a bit of woods trails....(at our recent regional mini-Dirtweek at Wardy's.... I defined the trails as single-track but my mentor claims they are wide-track... holy cow, too many trees and shrubs to get hit in the face. Got hit in the brain bucket by an overhanging branch that would not move.....woohooo.... but I stayed upright. I think I would prefer a smaller bike, like a TTR125L on these trails. Then, the criss-crossing traffic.... like a demolition derby, almost!

I think I'll go for bigger doubles and stay away from them there shrubbery...

yeah, I know what you mean. I love to be wrapped up with mother nature but not swatted by her. ha!
hey I've got something funny to share. This last race a guy fell way in front of me to the left of me but my intuition said to brake hard and so I did and the dumbass rolled over until he was right in my path and he was asking for it, he actually stopped with his legs spread apart just waiting for me to smush his family jewels! Man, my bike stopped with my front tire just touching his nuts! Man, he should of came to me after the race and kissed my stinky feet. ha! but we was probably too embarrassed.
He was one of two dumbasses from the city Conception. One of them was reprimanded on the starting line because his seat was completely loose so his friend found some plastic string on the ground and fixed it right there. The other guy fell after the next turn. 4 turns later two guys were falling all over themselves so I had to go around them. Man, it was a mad house! I need to change classes. I now rename the enduro class as the class for dumbasses who don't know anything about racing. So many people falling in front of me (after a bad start. rubber-band. my first time) I just finished second. I swore that off and got the holeshot next time and was a half lap in front of the second place guy (last years class winner) when the gas ran out. I had been almost seizing and so just threw my hands up but then for the hell of it put the petcock on "reserve" and kicked it over a few times and I'll be damned it started so I start twisting it but 7 guys passed me. It was the last lap so I passed 3 before the finish line. They will permit me to race with the Novice B class which is mostly for beginners with real MX bikes that aren't fit enough to last 15 laps. I know I can race 10 but I'll see how I do racing 5 with them. If I do good then maybe I'll race the Novice A class afterwards. I'm so tired of dummies falling in front of me. I'd rather have trees whacking me!
take care my friend

I feel your frustration.......

by the way, you been playing with matches in that department store in Asuncion?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

ha! not quite.
You know, latinos generally think of white folk as being emotionally cold but I've never seen so much disregard for others than I have down here. The greedy bastarrd store owner told the guards to lock the exit doors so that clients wouldn't leave without paying. That resulted in hundreds dead, including the guards (the only justice in this torrid scene). Now the owner is facing criminal charges but he'll just bribe the guard and go scott free. That's the way it is down here in countries impoverished and corrupted by bribes. The only time the heaviness of all this mess is totally forgotten is when I'm working hard or riding hard. Thank God for the inspiration given to the first guys to make/develop motorcycles. frreedom machines

Jag..... by the way, what kind of motorcycle races do you get on your TV?... south American races, US or European races?

Posted by: jaguar---------------------

Well actually I don't have a TV but want to get one before the AMA nationals of 2005 to watch Carmichael and Bubba race together. That is if I can find a cable company that can supply such programming. When this years nationals started I went to the house of my English friend who said his ESPN channel would show the races but it never came on. I'll have to investigate.

Posted by: shiftless---------------------

what about ESPN en Espanol?

Pokie

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

I guess you guys are not on the same satellites as Argentina?.... or do you have only cable?

I know ESPNEspanol is in Montevideo and Buenos Aires and Santiago..

Posted by: Pokie---------------------

Going to MXdNations: Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Venezuela. None of the Australasian countries are going to Spain... nor are the US and Canada.
These nations are to be commended for competing on the world scene.

Next year we hope to have two or three dirtriders from south of the border participating in DIRTWEEK '03! .........Milton Caputti (mxargentina.com.ar) me escuchas?
