Only 2 more motos for RC! I assume he was not on the 450 then?
Posted by: RM_guy---------------------
Here's my take on the race...
It was a perfect day for the races, on Sunday. It rained all day Saturday and everything except the Women’s races were canceled. There was no practice or qualifying. Sunday morning the track was a soupy mess and looked to be an interesting day. Practice proved to be proof that 4 strokes have an advantage when it’s muddy. There were guys that would come around the corner and the bike would just stop dead in the mud and throw them off over the bars. Some times the rider needed assistance pulling the bike out of the mud. Both Stewart and RC showed that they weren’t going to let some mud slow them down at all though.
As the sun came out it began drying up the track (and the pits). By the time the qualifiers started the track was getting better and better. There was some real good racing in the qualifiers. It’s hard to comment on all of them but Ryan Clark put on a most impressive drive from dead last to 12th to grab the last qualifying spot. Since there was no qualifying on Saturday they ran full gates in both qualifying heats. That 42 riders.
Roy showed his aggressive side and looked like a pinball as he bounced off of riders as he worked his way up. At one point he knocked Austin Squires nearly off the track right before the big downhill triple by the road. I thought for sure he was going to cartwheel through the crowd right where I was standing.
Josh Woods was also pretty impressive in the 125 qualifying. He was way out front and looked good. When I was strolling through the pits I saw him pitting out of a van. I have to give these privateers a lot of credit for doing what they do on a shoestring budget. A 10th in the first moto and a 16th over all is nothing to sneeze at.
The first 125 moto looked like it just might be a good race. Reed and Bubba were battling it out for a few laps and Reed was giving him a run for his money. Then it happened, Reed had a spectacular get off while whipping his bike over a jump when leading Stewart. He couldn’t bring it back and jumped off and landed in front of and before his bike. He got right back up but he had broken his front brake right off the handle bars and couldn’t keep up the pace. He pulled off the track to either have the dangling hose cut off or ties up and went on to still finish 9th. That was all Stewart needed and he held the lead (a big lead) for the moto win. The moto win clinched the 125 National title and after he rode by and slapped his dad’s hand, he took a victory lap.
Jessman is another one to watch. Even though he crashed in both motos he still placed 2nd overall. He is very humble about his success too. I talked to him in the pits afterwards and all he could say was how he needs to step it up a notch and he was disappointed in his results for the day. The drive and determination at that level is awe inspiring.
In the second 125 moto, Bubba got 3rd or 4th off the line and was in the lead half way through the 2nd lap for another run away win. He was doing some incredible sick whips off some of the jumps. He was obviously breaking every law of physics when he had the rear wheel in front of the front wheel. The kid is like one with the bike and the way he changes the attitude of the bike in the air is amazing. Without tapping the rear brake he can rotate from 45 degrees nose high to 45 degrees nose down seemingly at will.
During the press conference, Bubba was asked if he was nervous about it being a race that he could clinch the title at. He said he wasn’t nervous and didn’t lose any sleep over it. He went on to say that it was an easy win as he looked towards Jessman and Fonseca. They both just smirked and shook their heads like, “He has no idea how hard we worked to just get 2nd and 3rd.”
The 250 motos were a race for 2nd. RC hole shot both motos and was never challenged. He was the only one that was tripling a down hill jump until Lusk started doing it towards the end of the 2nd moto. Speaking of Lusk, he came on real strong in the 1st moto only to fade back. He must have gotten some counseling between motos because he was on fire in the 2nd moto. Tortelli crashed in the first moto and lost his muffler. That sucker is LOUD. He was in last place when he got lapped by RC. It was an interesting race between 1st and last as Tortelli hung with RC for several laps before he pulled off the track. Lapped riders were actually pulling over to let both of them pass. I think he just wanted to prove he could run with RC. If he had ridden at that speed right after he crashed he would have placed much higher.
Larocco looked very strong but even with a good start in the 1st moto he couldn’t catch RC. A 4th start in the 2nd moto start let everyone see how quickly Mike can move up through the ranks. He had a soild 2nd overall.
Hamblin was also very consistent in both motos which his 3rd overall showed. He was never intimidated by anybody and held his own and proved once again he can run with the big boys. He told me in the pits that he is definitely riding 125’s for Suzuki next year. Good for him. He’s a real nice guy and I hope the best for him.
There was talk in the crowd about a match up between RC and Bubba. Bubba was actually turning faster lap times and RC by 3 to 4 seconds at times. I’d love to see him on a 250 (or RC on a 125) and see what happens. In the pits my friend told Steward Sr. that we we’re going to start a rumor that Bubba was going to 250 next year. He just laughed and said, “Nope, 125’s.”

I'm impressed with Hamblin and I'm sure Roger is happy to get a rider that can run a whole series
