drz overheating??!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

my 2000 drz is great but it always uses water andboils realitively easy, just replaced the rad cap to no avail.does any one know if there is a thermostaton it;its a dirt only kicker if it matters.

Hey there remember me??How have you been?I use the water wetter in my bike and has never ever overheated on me(now it will). There are a few of these type products on the market and they are designed to improve waters ability to carry heat away from the motor.I have antifreeze/water mix(Honda premix bought by the qrt) and 5 capfulls of the water wetter.

hey there weekender, hows it been?the water wetter is in thre but i have more serious problems than coolant selection i believe. do you know if there is a thermostat on the kicker, dealer is sketchy ,may be a waterpump problem according to them. ran the bike dry briefly after a blown hose, could this have smoked the impeller?i'm frustrated and the meteor D/S is almost here, any insight is MUCH appreciated!!

You may be correct about the blown water pump.In your first post you said it uses water. That's an indication of a blown head gasket.Perform a leakdown test or remove the head and replace the gasket.I'd also check the water pump.

My best riding buddy has a DRZ and was having the same problem. He went through the water pump and everything. The problem turned out to be that the valves were out of adjustment !! Who would have thought that ?? You wouldn't suspect it but that turned out to be the problem.

ps
I ride an XR400 so I don't have these problems

thanks for the input kwakvgr,as far as the xr though ,its just one problem for you-getting roosted by drz's!(he-he)

Hey PA TG-
I think Weekender had a prob w/ his waterpump. Apparently, Suzook has been replacing them on a few bikes.

Sorry for the late reply TG.If there were a water pump problem with leakage you would see it leaking coolant internally:milky colored oil or externally:water running off the motor onto the ground. These types of water pump problem I could see from running dry causing the seals to burn up.The impellar itself should still work though. It is plastic and driven by a plastic gear from inside the motor. When you start the bike cold remove the rad cap and you should see coolant flowing as there is no thermostat.Valves out of adjustment would make absolutely no sense to me at all unless hard starting or valve ticking were an issue.Head gasket is another good possibility though and if possible a leakdown test would help.
