Track watering trailer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

At the track where I ride, we are trying to come up with an idea for watering the track. There is no water avaliable on site, so we need to bring it in. We are considering a heavy duty trailer, possibly a car hauler, with an agriculture type water tank. We are looking to do this in an economical manner.
Any comments or your experiance with this would be helpful.

I'd start by talking to local farmers and see if they know of anyone who might be willing to sell a large capacity water tank, or know of somewhere else where you could buy one. At a one track I go to they use an old GMC 6500 heavy duty truck with a huge tank and a fire hose sprayer on top with a guy shooting it around. But its not to practical as the water is sprayed over much too large of an area. Another track has a truck that is some old tanker (it looks like an antique milk truck), pump and all on the truck and no trailer. This work quite well as the water is fanned out the back and really soaks the ground. You need to consider how much water it would actually take to water the track, if you would be willing to settle for a smaller tank but make two trips, and if there is somewhere close that you'll be able to fill that huge tank fast.

I've seen large white plastic tanks for cheap now and again. they are popular in agriculture. Get used as tanks for sprayers. any aggy dealers in your area. Couple of those on a flat bed might do if you don't mind multiple runs. .... something to think about.

I would consider a pond first. Once the pond is filled you will have your water supply. Much like Cooperland has. The tanks I used for the Spodewash are cheap and hold 250 gallons. Weight is the biggest issue. I'm working on a setup for me and will post some pics when I get it done. Don't look for it to soon, I don't have my pond dug yet.

The track where we ride has dug a pong that they are going to refill from an electrically driven pump, then pump out to the sprinklers. We used to pull from the creek, but it would run it dry in fairly short order.

If you do try to use some sort of large tank, make sure that is has baffles to keep the sway and slosh to a minimum, but not so much that it won't drain fast enough.

We used to pump from the creek into a large tank that had a pump feeding through a row of nozzles cut into a horizontal pipe. The nozzles used to clog too often and I think we really got better results with a single large hose (with a flattened out nozzle to disperse the spray) that you could target the desired areas that you couldn't realistically drive to.

if you do go with a tank, it will take a decent sized dump truck with at least a partial load to have enough power and traction to move that thing around.
