CRF 450R Problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

3 out of 5 450's from the local shop here have valve problems. The bikes have any where from 50 to 80 hours on the motor. Is this typical for the Honda's? 2 of the bikes are on there second set of valses and the other one just got his first new set. With a piston the total was $400, this seems like more than routine maintenance to me.

I work in a bike shop and we have not had any valve problems with the crf's just with the compression release rocker adjustment.

The guys at Service said they don't know wht they get out of whack but they do and once corrected you will likely not need to adjust it again. But it can seem like a valve problem.... see links below too though.

motofamily - Mike Perry from Kibblewhite Precision Machine has shared a ton of useful info on the CRF valve issues. The following links wil take you there:

UPDATE!!!!
Local shop has called Honda and they think it is a fuel problem. They are saying that running a high octane fuel might help this problem. The only recommended High Octane fuel is VP 4. Have you seen the price for this fuel? I have been running my YZF on 94 for 2 years now and still haven't had to touch the valves.

This is not my opinion, just something I was told by someone who has a bike shop...

He said he feels the problem is from people who oil their filter, put it in the bike, start it up for a minute and then shut it off. The oil gets pulled off and sucked into the engine where it sticks in spots on the valves and seats and when the bike is shut off it dries on there. The valve doesn't seal good after that and causes it to burn the valve.

I don't know if that's a bunch of B.S. or not, it's only something someone told me. In my case I always oil the filter, put it in the bike, and don't start it until the next day and I've never had a valve problem on my CRF, so I guess it's possible.

Is it true that the YZF valves and the CRF valves are different even though they both claim to be Titanium? I was told that the YZF are actually a mixture of Titanium and alloy thus making them stronger. The VP 4 supposedly has more Oxygen and doesn't remove the protective coating on the valves. This still does not explain why some people are have problems and some are not. Would like to see some type of article in an upcomming magazine article.....

Can someone verify that airfilter statement? Rich?

That's probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard so I'll have to go with NO, I can't verify that

I've never seen oil "dry".

Now that's funny.

The Kawasaki KLX's have the same valve problem. The don't "burn". They get cupped. There's something incompatible between the valve and seat material. We're still trying to find a solution to the problem.

Replacing the OEM valves with a good stainless steel valve like the Kibblewhite pieces will cure the problem.
