it is ok after all - (no clutch shift)

i've read lots of threads about whether or not it's ok to shift without the clutch. i firmly believe it does no harm whatsoever to the tranny. now if you downshift and overrev the motor that's a different matter.
the reason i am convinced is that i have a 92 kx250 engine completely apart right now. piston shattered and had to get new cases as a result. anyway this thing is obviously 10 years old and the previous owner didn't take good care of it. so i know it hasn't been babied it's whole life or sat in a garage. it's been ridden and neglected.
anyway the teeth of the gears are always in constant contact with each other. always. all gears. when you shift you are just repositioning the ones that can spin freely to lock with those that don't. it's the dogs that lock into the stationary gears. i never really understood this until i took this one apart.
anyway, the dogs on this bike show absolutely no wear whatsoever. none. and it's 10yrs old. so use it if you want, but you don't have to.

That's why they call it a 'constant mesh' trans vs: say a 'synchro mesh'.
Clutch? For shifting? Really? Is THAT what it's for???
Nah. I use mine when I come to a stop. Most of the time otherwise, no.

Attention all newbies/non-gearhead types. Whats being promoted here is proper - but I feel needs some more detail. I have been working on/riding scoots all my life and have had countless tranny's down that have thousands of miles on them putting them thru such abuse as riding 5 gear wheelies (I NEVER use my clutch when shifting with the front end up), running 3 hour Hare Scrambles and NEVER touching the clutch the whole race ect.!! In all the years of riding/racing I have only had 3 tranny failures - all a result of me not doing what I am about to suggest to you. When you shift without a clutch it is ESSENTIAL that you "time" the shift with a "blip" of the throttle. This DOES NOT mean that you slow your forward motion down (when I have the front end up and I shift while on the back wheel I,by habit formed from years of practice, shift while the bike is naturally on its downward movement within the balance point). It is obvious to anyone who watches someone do this that the shift/blip is almost instantaneous. The mistake that I have made inthe past is shifting to light - YOU MUST NOT DO THIS!! The shift should be short and firm in order to get a positive engagement!! If you get into the bad habit of thinking you are helping yuour tranny by being gentle and yo try this technique I GURANTEE a tranny failure. What will happen is The "dogs" will not have total engagement and will instantly have rounded corners - future shifts from that day forward will be dismal!!
IF YOU ARE GOING TO TRY THIS - ALWAYS BLIP AND SHIFT FIRMLY!! And by the way, I am not saying HARD I am saying firm!!
ONce you get this you will be shocked at how little you will use your clutch!!
