Ok, I just bought a 2000 DRZe. I've ridden it on several occasions and like it a lot for what I want to do with it.
What can I do to the stock pipe to improve it's performance?
I would like to be able to not have to go to an aftermarket pipe as noise is a bit of a concern.
Any advice about any other mods that I should consider would be appreciated!
Thanks
Wolf

I'm pretty sure there is a couple of baffles you can open up in there that will make it louder, but not much more. also you can open up the airbox and rejet. Some of the DRZ guys probly can tell you more about the specifics. I have seen a couple of pages about mods for the DRZ just surfing around on the net.

Wolf-Most bang for a few bucks on that bike: Take the insert out of the silencer, bump the main up to a 163 and take the lid off the airbox. Total cost: About $5! Personally, I took the lights and kickstand off, too. This takes a bit of weight off the bike. She pulls hard off the bottom. Great all around bike, IMO.

Like Big Lou said, bump the main jet up to atleast a 160.The pilot jet is also way to lean from factor. If your going to stay with the drz's stock Keihin jet needle,I'd bump the pilot jet up to a #48 and turn the fuel screw out in 1/2 turn increments.

Hey TT, do you recommend a different type of needle and jet? A different Carb?
Lou, When I remove the insert, is that also the spark arrestor? Do I need to drill any holes anywhere else?

I don't have any experience with any of the other needle's.I've been busy jetting (trying)my 300exc to my liking.I do know that some guys have played with the Yamaha EMM needle. If Im not mistaken, this needle is much richer from 0 - 1/4 throttle,so you would need to go with a leaner pilot jet, maybe a #40pj???You might try doing a search in the thumper forum for "drz jetting" or "EMM needle."

Wolf the DRZ comes with a 165 main jet when bought in other countries. The manual lists a 147.5 for the U.S spec bike and a 165 for others.Do the following and you will be very happy with the improvement. You could go with a 165 main jet and a 48 pilot as sugessted above.Drop the needle clip one postion down.Keep the stock needle it's fine believe me.Remove the rubber snorkel from the top of the airbox it will pull right out. After the carb go to the muffler. You see that little hole that exhuast is supposed to escape from well take a closer look. You see the outer ring that surrounds it take a hole saw and remove completely the original hole from the endcap. You can if you choose to remove the spark aresstor from inside too. This job is easier with the endcap removed. You need to remove it when you get the hole enlarged anyway so you have access to the baffles.Inside the muffler chamber there are three baffle walls again take a much larger hole saw and remove as much as you can getting right close to the size of the muffler chamber itself.Remove the first baffle replace the endcap start the bike take note of the exhuast note.If you like and can deal with more noise take the next baffle out and so on.Enjoy your newfound power.

Wolf, here is what I did:
1 3/8" hole saw to remove insert in tip of muffler
1/2"dia., long drill bit, drilled 8 holes through both baffles, roughly in a circle
(there are only 2 baffles, in a '00 anyway)
Don't bother screwing with the SA, it doesn't make much difference
165 main, 48 or 50 pilot, 1 1/2 - 2 turns out, clip one notch richer
Still very quiet and a lot punchier off the bottom, but still not as snappy as with the race pipe.

THanks guys. I am going to work on the pipe this weekend. Carb is now 165/48 clip dropped one position. I'll probably come up with more Q's for you as I work on it.

Hey PeteN, you've got a DRZ450 E for sale!! Is that the LA Sleeve kit?

I've been thinking about modifying my stock exhaust, but I just can't bring myself to the point of doing it. I don't want to open it up too much and lose too much backpressure- I like my low-end. I very rarely get to use any upper-mid - top-end power on the trail anyway. I don't know, maybe I will.
