So who was the farthest from what you expected?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nikki---------------------

(VD gave me this idea in another thread...)

So... now that you met a whole bunch of DRNers for the first time at DW02 - who actually ended up totally different than what you expected?

I would have to say Elk. I think it has somethin to do with his avatar - I just expected to meet that guy in the picture... instead Elk actually turned out to be a really cool dude

Posted by: nikki---------------------

And, while we're at it... who was exactly what you expected?

That's a tough one... but I would have to say Natalie. I expected a friendly smiling face and I think she was the first person (other than Solo) to come up and introduce herself to me.

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

I'd have to go with Elk too. Because of his Birth date in his profile, I thought he was 52!

Posted by: BillyWho---------------------

For me it was Milk, super cool guy, but not what I expected look wise, all I kept thinking on the way home was his refference to the "loudermilk ****slap"..., and how very few if any can even do it .

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

ROTFLMAO!! I wasn't EVEN going to ask him to go into detail! :scream:
I had an idea of what he looked like from his website but wasn't quite prepared for his uhhh, special charm. Luv ya man.

Posted by: BillyWho---------------------

Elk said he has it figured out LOL, he is going to practice all year and try and top the "master" in a showdown at sunrise on the grass track next year

Posted by: MX-727---------------------

Elk, easily. Same as Nikki, I was expecting a fat Erik Estrada.

Nikki, you were closest to what I expected....fast!, plus you've posted tons of pictures, so I figure we all knew what you looked like.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

Blackhawk. I had her pegged as a shy, reserved, stick-in-the-mud type. She's exactly the opposite. :thumb:

I had SFO down as a weird old dude who can make stuff outta dirt, but he's not like that at all. He's a weird YOUNG dude who can make stuff outta dirt. He's a helluva cook, too.

VD is exactly like I pictured him. . .except for the spud head.

Well, since I will be at DW 03, Ill put on a clinic for the Slap. Okie, write me down for daily lessons. I must warn you, bring ice and boxers. The right underwear is the key. :thumb:

what was I posed to look like Senor? Hell, Im a fat guy with a bad accent, and I used to have removable teeth but the dentist fixed that! What else could you ask for?

Posted by: GETMETOCA---------------------

Elk and Papakieth - two guys I never really interacted with much on DRN so I did not have a feel for what kinda fellas they really were! For some reason I figured we probably would not interact much at DW either. Come to find out - they are two of the coolest, most fun and lovable, personable guys you'd ever want to meet!! I miss them a lot already!

As for who was exactly like I thought they would be: TTRGuy - I'd heard all about what a nice, great, friendly, give-the-shirt-off-his-back kinda guy you were and that is exactly what you are! Vintage Dirt - I had a feeling you were gonna be a lot of fun and become a good bud :thumb: Jaybird - I don't care what kinda guff you take on DRN - you are a big sweetie and a comforting soul and somehow I just always knew that.

Isn't that the description of just about everyone in OK?

Good one Aimee! LOL from Red and me! :thumb:

Posted by: XR3J---------------------

I would have to go with Elk also. I wasn't quite expecting that nice of a guy. You sure do stay calm for as crap as people give you!

Posted by: Milk---------------------

Zio was the farthest from what I expected. I couldnt find a pic of him before I picked him up at the airport. I was figuring on some older dude that wasnt gonna say much or be cool. He even listened to my music and he sang Freaks of the Industry with me! He was definitely different and cooler than I thought he would be.

I didnt know what to expect from Timr either. I guess it has to do with picking someone up you have really never even "typed" to before. He was cool as I picked him up, and by Guthrie we were cussin and driving and talking.

I thought Okie was gonna be stuck up or quiet and reserved. I was afraid to use any kind of adult language fearing I would get nuked in real life.

No one was close to what I thought they would be actually. I cant judge too well from type what people are like (cept for Sarge the crazy loon). I can say i was pleased after meeting all the people that I did and I hope they were pleased as well.

Mr. Pleaser was wayyyyyyyy more quiet than I ever thought he would be in real life. I got him to say some stuff to me though.

UPDATED

I thought these people were meanies:

Red
Aimee
Nikki

Posted by: justql---------------------

Blackhawk was the biggest surprise for me. I had set beside her at a meal and been around her a couple of times before someone told me who she was. Shocked me. I thought she was just Jeff's girlfriend.

Bswift was just what i thought he'd be.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Hey Mister! I am stuck up! Was good to meet you too Gimpy I do have to say that when I saw you and Sarge sitting together talking I thought some kind of chemical reaction would take place... Thanks for "lighting" the poker run. I came looking but got there late I guess, would have made a great picture, lol.

Posted by: Milk---------------------

There's a "pic" waiting in your email box. :thumb:

PS All you have to do is ask to see it next time. I have no shame!

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

The biggest suprise for me was Jaybird. Somehow I missed meeting him at DW01. I wish I hadn't He was great! I don't know how else to describe him. Big ole smile, I felt at ease with him instantly.
GETMETOCA was another pleasant suprise. like she said, we hadn't interacted very much if at all online, but in person. . . you couldn't ask for better. Natalie embodied the spirit of Dirtweek for me this year.
txbigguy suprised me to. I expected someone more, well more my size I guess.

Heck yes I can, just use anybody@wesbaca.com and I'll get the email. Sorta lets you get real creative.

Oh and by the way, its Seņor, not Senor. Accent is everything doncha know.

Posted by: Milk---------------------

Its called a tilde and I sent the pic 30 mins ago! Take your One-A-Day and your Metimucil and get with the program! i sent it to dwe@wesbaca.com btw.

Posted by: DWreck---------------------

I would have to go with Jaybird as what I least expected, he can get pretty intense talking about lube in here. When I saw his bike I thought that a free rider had penetrated our ranks. Come to think of it I did see him do a Superman No Hander Lander on the big step up. I do like the lube though. Elk was a close second, lots younger than what I had expected. I know that this isn't a category but Natalie would win the sweetie pie award-always a smile and friendly and personable as can be. By the way GETMETOCA isn't short for Get Mocha! Sarge was just like I expected, think of your favorite war movie, someone that looks and acts like him is in it.

the ktm looks good in black, much better than orange.

i met jaybird last year at dw before i had a chance to develop an online image of him. he's almost as cool as me.

I always saw the name as " Get Met of CA" Seeling insurance? Get me to CA... never saw it. :silly:

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

It seems we all tend to get a metal picture of who we talk to here on the boards. Sometimes they are spot-on, other times we miss the mark completely.

Zio said: "Yeah but, Jaybird...you really don't talk like that, do you?"
LOL....Sorry, Z...I've spent wayyy too much time in Hickville to sound any different!

For me, I envisioned VD as a larger, ruder fella....not the case at all. A very nice, intelligent person.
I also envisioned Jeff Gilbert as I see many of my musician friends...a bit loud and full of themselves....not the case at all with Jeff, he is a gentleman, a great Dad, and a great asset to us all.
Brownie was quite a surprize to me as well...I thought he'd be a grumpy, hard to deal with track owner type....not even close! You rock Brownie!
I also was very surprized when I met Stan_Flemmings! I figured him to be a bit older and quite intelligent...well he's a bit younger and quite intelligent!

GETMETOCA, Hon...you are exactly as I envisioned you. Sweet as Tupelo Honey!
I pretty much saw Elk as how I had him pegged from here. No surprize, good people.
I envisioned Papateef and Ivan as big ole teddy bears with great dispositions....I had 'em pegged!

I'm still tryin' to figure out that Okie fella!

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

Most like what I expected would be a tie _SOLO_ and Stan. From their posts their maturity for their ages always seems to show thru. In real life I saw 2 young men who love riding and were more then thrilled to have earned a spot among us old fogies

Least like I pictured Wraith. I expected another guy in his 40's- I found it hard to believe after meeting him that he is old enough to have kids riding. Sorry I didn't get to talk with you other then when you arrived and were ready to leave but there is always next DW

Isn't it amazing to pull together 250 strangers for 5 days and in the end not have one that you were looking forward to seeing him leave

Posted by: slo' mo---------------------

I expected Jaybird to be more of a gruff, hardline conservative opinionated old fogey who told you exactly what was on his mind. Oh, wait, that is Jaybird! Actually, he was a very sociable guy who I had a lot in common with regarding worldly views.

Jeff Gilbert surprised me. I expected him to be a lot more outgoing.

Didn't get to meet Milk. Seemed to be at the hospital when he made his rounds, and I didn't ride the night-time poker run. Probably a good thing, too :scream:

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

I had sarge picked out when I first saw him, I knew it had to be!

PapaK surprised me in a good way, I pictured him some old big guy in coveralls smokin a cig.

Okie, never would have guessed that he was like that. I thought he'd be some stuffy guy in a tie, NOT!!

Natalie, extremely nice and helpful, just as I thought

Speedy, well, Speedy, well, Speedy......:thumb:

Milk, the slapper, you kill me. Evertime I hear Kid Rock, I see your face, AHHHHHHHHH!

Blackhawk had to be my biggest surprise.

VD, another surprise, great guy.

Lou, my Italian brother from another Mother! Just as expected.

Billy, you're gonna pay for the sunrise slapper comment! "Son, sit donw here, I'm gonna show you something that's been in the family for ages."

Eddy, just as expected, helpful, the cook and everything in between

Thump, already saw him in a picture, just flat out cool.

Twinny, same as above.

Red and Nikki, cool, fast and cool!

Zio, you left your drum stick in my tent!

Jaybird, always right there to help with some lube,

Motometal, fast, fast, fast, get rid of that damn horn

Motohead, my brother, didn't picture you like that, damn nice and all!!

FC, well, FC, well, FC, well FC......

The Zoomer, awesome family, great folks and his yellow bike was on its side as much as mine!

I can't list everyone, I wish I could but all I can say is way cool family I met. Next year, someone else is stepping up to the whipping boy plate, I'm thinkin Canadian Toddler!

Oh yeah, Pokie and Shiftless, wayyyy off, didn't even know they were the proud parents of Okie! And Shiftless, you're gonna get it for those bug stickers you applied to my ride. The turbo button was cool though!

Fred T was a cool surprise, I mean Factory Fred!

Tony Eeds, great dude!

I have to stop, sorry, can't help it!!..........

I thought Ai met you when Sarge and I bummed a chair for me to sit in while I flagged. No_Mo and your wife were there though.

PS Anyone that was on that Poker Run should feel privledged. Glad it wasnt a Pokhim Run though. :thumb:

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Motometal: I pictured my fellow Iowan as a 40 something burned out rocker with a ponytail, gold chains and a Z-28. Great guy, funny and can ride that CR. Keep the horn and the color coded dinosaur performance adjuster. They obviously work.

Jaybird: I pictured a cranky opinionated scowl on the face grump. He truns out to be a happy smiling sociable likeable guy.

GETMETOCA: We need some gals like you here in Iowa. Your smile is contagious and your demeanor is warm and cozy. Thanks again for the sammiches. Next year I'll bring some real cooking gear and chef you up something tasty.

justql, bswift, Dwreck, Lorin and the rest of the Spodes: Aside from physical features, this gang was precisely what I had imagined. A group of guys I am proud to have ridden with. If I found work in OK, I would feel comfortable moving there, as I see these folks as true friends.

SFO & Fe_Princess: Not too different than I had imagined. Very cool and very knowledgable about lots of things.

TTR and Speedy: Exactly as I pictured....oh, wait, I saw pictures, never mind....

Sarge: What's your name scumbag?

Pleaser: Yep, way more quiet than I had expected. Cool guy though.

Jeff Gilbert: Not as I pictured physically, but in attitude and personality, dead on.

If I didn't mention someone I met, please forgive me, there's a whole slew of people I met and my little pea brain just aint working right this morning.

This is exactly how I pictured him, too. I was pleasantly surprised to meet an incredibly nice guy, who is civilized, yet is still, well...big

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

Gave up the smoke 2+ years ago. Coveralls. . . well lets just say they never did what their name implies.
So I switched to mostly wearing shorts. good call on my part, Eh?

Posted by: CAL---------------------

Elk by a long shot. Biglou introduced me to him and he said hi, I'm Carlos...Elk. I didn't even realize that is was "the Elk" until after I walked away! Doh! :o

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

It's Carlo damnit, Cals!!

This is more like what I expected. I was pretty close, I had the tank-top right:

Posted by: nikki---------------------

LMFAO zio!!!

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

LOL...I need to know if Lorin's S.O. reads the boards before I pop off here!

btw...I'd met motometal last year and took a liking to him right away...(fiesty lil o-ring eater)
But, Rooster....dewd.....impressive work on the drums!

Posted by: biglou---------------------

I've pretty much met everyone before so I knew who was who (whom?). Always good to meet some new faces though. A nicer group of people you won't find anywhere. I already knew Jaybird was an OK sorta dude. I didn't know that Carlo was gonna hug me, or that zio was gonna KISS ME!!! :scream: So much for my plan to try to freak him out by kissing him first! (It's an Italian thing, don't ask.) I was stumbling up the hill for my morning, um, business, when I ran into Nikki and Red. I said to myself, "Hey! I know those guys." And when Wes pulled up right to the tent and pointed at me and said "HEY! I know that guy.", I was looking at him like, "Who is that?" Then it hit me, That's VD! He looks much younger and more fit in person. Great camping down the road from you, Wes. And thanks SO much for the coffee. Everyone else that I met for the first time was just so cool and so nice. I'll say it again, just like family. DW is the highlight of my year, and I'm proud to mooch coffee/sodas/carne asada/boudin/burritos/beers/etc. off of you guys and gals!

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

That was Rooster? And I didn't think I got to meet him. OF course all I really said when I found out it was 1 am: "SHUT IT OFF!! SHUT IT OFF!!

Elk, the horns will probably be removed...as soon as my new high pressure air powered setup is complete!

Jaybird, I was trully disappointed that you didn't sneak into my camp at night and lube my chain! I had a full can of Brake Cleaner and two rolls of paper towels locked and loaded just in case!

Uhhhh, I had NO idea it was that late! Of course, every night was that way for me, some sort of rift in the time/space continuum must have occured as we exceeded the speed of light driving through MO, KS and OK trying to get there as early as possible.

Posted by: sfc crash---------------------

i gotta say mister.."mister", there i said it. i met him at DW01 and saw him at begining of DW02 and thought,"that guy thinks he's way too cool, he hasn't said word one to me, stuck up fast guy"..then after the alchol induced paranoia cleared up, i realized i hadn't said word one to him! yep, Mr Bill turned out to be a quite southern gentleman who was willing to listen to my diatribes, and ussually only added something of importance(i gotta figure that one out)...so, for me it's Mr Who, a pro who still is just a regular guy. milk,zio,vd,elk,timr,..pretty much as i figured...all morons! :thumb:

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

Shame I didn't make it this year, sounds like a hoot. But, from DW01 I was suprised by Jaybird too, what a cool guy
His son took the only known picture of me at dirtweek too

Posted by: Fe_princess---------------------

I gotta say Elk.
Dude remember the conversation we had about your avatar and you looked at me like I was speaking in tongues.
I was expecting some blond so-cal guy, not the guy whose shoulder was pulled out of his socket with a cheering audience...
I'm kicking myself (not too hard) for missing the smack down.
I expect an official invitation next year.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

After much reflection I would have to vote for a couple:

SFO & FePrincess............

I figured SFO for a guy who would be too smart to have the time of day for a guy like me - couldn't have been more wrong - he was smart alright but one of the nicest, most un-assuming people I met.

Fe-Princess - a princess she was, but I really had this bad ass biker chick image in mind. Way too sweet of a gal for the tough girl I had in mind. Better hang on to that one SFO! :thumb:

Loved meeting you both and can't wait to meet up again - we may have to head out to CA so its not a year before we can hook up again.

Bill & Denise - I hope the trip was all you expected and then some, it was truly a pleasure meeting both of you.

Posted by: Fe_princess---------------------

Flattery will get you everywhere...
It was really great to meet you too.
I'll admit I had this lumberjack image of you in my mind (hence the avatar) , but you turned out to be this really, really sweet guy who always gave me his full attention.
You better make it out this way.
Any chance you'll be out for Reno??

Posted by: motometal---------------------

smb, I think I was there that morning! while most were waiting for the ground to dry out, you were out having a blast on that KDX

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Certainly a chance of us making it out for Reno - but I am starting to wonder if the annual Valentines day ride in Reno will even happen this year. It'll be hard without Strick and he seems to be scarce these days

Posted by: gnarlykaw---------------------

The jury is still out on ALL OF YOU! i still have not fallen back ito my daily routine! WHAT HAVE YOU PEOPLE DONE TO ME!!!!!!!! :thumb:

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

Julius Pleaser surprised me even though I email to him a lot. He is very quiet in person.

Zio also surprised me--somehow I thought you were much older (just going by your posts, had never seen a picture).

Sarge and Milk--maybe I haven't seen as many of your posts as I had thought, but you both had me laughing all week. Much funnier than I expected!

Jeff Gilbert--You also look different from what I had pictured, somehow I had imagined someone a little calmer or something. I had a great time hanging out with you and Tigger--thank you for the loan of your tent!

Natalie and I are going to start working on that one!
We want the ride to happen :flame:
I've never met Strick because I didn't go last year.
Do you have any suggestions on getting ahold of him.
We are willing to do the leg work to make it happen.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

I will e-mail Strick and I think I still have a phone number so I will look and try to call. I think the biggest problem would be bike storage for everyone.

Posted by: Fe_princess---------------------

Well, we have 3 1/2 months to straigten it out.
I started a thread in Organized Rides too.
SFO and I used cobra links to lock our bikes to the trailer which was locked to the truck.
What kind of storage are you talking about???

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

I didn't mean anything bad Jeff! You are full of energy and fun, that's all.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Denise, most if not everyone will probably stay in casino's and then drive out to the riding area each day. That is the way it happened the last 2 years. Lets hop on over to the organized ride thread to further discuss.

Posted by: SFO---------------------

Back to the subject...
TTR guy, I thought he has gotta be a super spode, who rides a spode tt-r anyways?
He came around me soooooooo fast on the hare scrambles I thought I was chained to a tree.
It was a slot car perspective, he didn't even move off of the trail or his seat cover, just zap~ and he lapped me and dissapeared.
He is an awesome woods rider on a tt-r.
BillyWho was super laid back guy, not some agro m-x weirdo, off the track at least.
Oakie and his family was very obliging and a pleasure to meet.( and work on your bike) Aimee whatcha gonna do.

Motometal was too young to know the difference between austinetic and martensetic. (and work on Denises bike)
Zoomer and his family gave me hope for my future as a father, what great people. (and work on your bike)
Guy Cooper for giving me the reeds for Denises bike and being very gratious.
Thump for the pipe I was going to buy and your integrity with the pit-police.
(and the sick avatars)
CCrider, and_SOLO_ for being the most unexpectedly nice and fun campmates.
Wrench, for not being nearly as sophisticated as his avatar...
(learn to start a 4stroke, surrender)
Spokerace, the best teacher for the yz-f starting ritual, make a video.
GETMETOCA-MightyAphrodite!
Jaybird, did you win something on my raffleticket the final day?
ZIO~jimmybeam<<<
Thanks for all the sick swag! I can't believe how rich my DW experience proved to be, and Denise, thanks for the great companionship~friendship I can't believe you are my old lady.
Your enthusiasm for this sport and to be a better rider has been a profound experience for me.
Thankyouall.
GOGIANTS!
GOGIANTS!
:flame:

Posted by: motometal---------------------

SFO, hey, Denises bike was easy compared to the basket cases I started with at age ten (that was 22 years and like 30 bikes ago)

...oops, i've divulged my age in earth years...people from my planet age differently than you earthlings!

Posted by: biglou---------------------

I gotta say, I enjoyed MM's bell! Riding the kiddie track and I know he's back there, I can hear this "ding-ding, ding-ding"!!! LOL! Dude, you were cracking me up with that! I did my best to keep you behind me. Riding W-I-D-E is one thing I do well.

Posted by: motometal---------------------

that kidde track rocked! the jumps were big enough to provide entertainment and practice, without the "pucker factor" of the jumps on the big track. Also the flat corners in the top/back section were fun to practice powersliding. I'm glad they let us grownups on the track, I tried to ride really slow or get off the track when there were too many little guys out.

That's not the way I heard it. All the kids were saying "there was this guy up there honking his horn and ring his bell at me."

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Ding ding ding! Out the way!!! Out the way!!!

Hearing the bell ringing behind you is not near as unsettling as hearing it from ten feet above you.........

I do believe I have experienced the same feeling....

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

See! See! I wasn't hearing things, it happend to Natalie too!

Posted by: motometal---------------------

you guys aren't having some type of flashback or post traumatic stress disorder, are ya? I'd feel bad. Well, a little bit...

Posted by: biglou---------------------

"Ding-ding! Ding-ding!"

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

Scott followed behind me for awhile on the kiddie track....I wondered why I heard no bells or horns. I know he can breeze by me, yet he stayed behind.
When we were sitting around later he said: "I wanted to get a good smell of your fuel"

LOL..... ( sometimes I worry about you flatlanders! )

Posted by: motometal---------------------

that was some pretty sweet smelling premix fumation. the other interesting smelling bike was Dave186's KX. He had something in there making a fruity smell. I could smell it even if I was 1/2 lap behind him!
