I'm trying to research dirt bikes and have no idea where to start. I've never had any exposure to this stuff at all--but I'm thinking of moving to Central America and thought a dirt bike would be the best transportation since I will need good gas mileage and versatility (off-road/on-road). If you were in my situation, where would you start? Do dirt bikes get good gas mileage? Can you get ones with low maintenance (they don't have many repair shops in C.A.)? What would you suggest for just daily average use (not jumping around or racing or anything--just transportation)? How much am I looking at spending for something dependable but cheap? Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

Honda XR and XL's are popular in the area from what I have heard from a few other souces. They are very reliable and get good gas mileage.

Good luck.

I'm with Ivan, Stock XR's are dependable and will burn pretty bad gas as well. They are probably street legal THERE too! :whiner: I would stay away from two stroke until you find ou if you can get quality gas and oil.

Good luck!

If you were to only ride on roads and 2 tracks and not much woods or MX I would go with a KTM LC4. They are expensive, but I haven't heard any complaints about them. They probably get pretty good gas milage because they are dual sports.

If you are on a budget go with the XR, they are reliable and proven over time, I don't think there have been any major changes to the XR line for some time aside for grafics and colors. If you don't have a resricted budget I would look into the KTM, you will never need to buy the after market stuff for it because it comes with it. Another plus for me with KTM's is the linkageless rear suspention. Not having to pull the rear end apert twice or thrice yearly is a big bonus :thumb: Now if you are looking to buy american, C-Dale has worked out the bugs with it's machines and from what I have read an all around great performer.

Good Luck, and keep us informed on what you buy and keep posting from what ever "Bananna Republic" you end up in

just FYI...the manual on the LC4 recomends 95 octane fuel. this may be tough to get in C.A.

just a thought

Along with the XR there's the Kawasaki KLR250 and KLR650. The Suzuki DR250, DR350 and DR650. The Yamaha XT350 and XT600. Check to see which particular model(s) are available in Central America. In Brazil they still ride DT200's which was nothing more than an RT180 with lights. Light, popular and a non-powervalve 2-stroke that can run on anything.

Might want to consider sticking with an air cooled bike, if you're really moving back in the sticks. Just fewer things to go wrong, smash, etc. That pretty much leaves you with the XR's.
