Finding a bike that's good for me.

Hey, I'm 14, 120lbs or so, 5'4" and I'm looking for a bike that would be good for me. I've been riding (on and off) since I was about 6, not hardcore or anything, just my yard (which is pretty big) and a few trails. I'll be sticking to woods and trails also. Could someone let me know what kind of bike would fit me best? Money is not a HUGE issue.
P.S. I'm thinking that I should get something on the bigger side since I will be growing and stuff.
1 more thing.
My crotch height is about 31 inches, if that could help give you an idea with the seat height and all.

What kind of bike have you ridden? Are you looking at a 4stroke or a 2stroke?
If you are just gonna be riding trails and woods, then you should probably go with a 4stroke. I would say something like an XR100 or
TT-R125. They should be good for your height. But if you are more experienced then maybe an TT-R225 maybe? IMO.

I took a ride up to a dealer in my area and he recommended a DR-Z125.
It seemed to fit me really well. Would this be a good bike for me?

At 5'4" you are almost tall enough for an XR, TTR or DRZ250. My wife is 5'6" and did fine learning how to ride on the DRZ250. The e-start of the DRZ made things good too.

I suggest staying away from the TTR225. It is too heavy for what you get. The XR200 is a reliable and good machine but you may outgrow it too soon. The XR and DRZ 250 have more aftermarket stuff available.

The only reason I said a TT-R225 was because it was a low seat height. I dont know anyone under 5'10" that rides so I dont really know too much about it, sorry.

At 5'4" you are already stretching the limits of a DR-Z 125 or TT-R125L. It may be a bit of a stretch right now for your height but based on your riding plans of Woods/Trails you might want to seriously look at a KDX. If your stretched out too far you can always shave the seat foam or lower the bike a bit. I also echo Ivan's opinion on the TTR-225 as I test rode one last year and it is hugely overweight/under powered and under suspended.

I took a look at a KDX (online) but couldn't seem to find the actual seat height and weight of the bike. Could anyone give me an idea of these?

A KDX is right for you. I was in the same place at 14 and got my first 200 cc enduro. It was slightly tall but you adapt quickly and can ride it for many years with out it feeling small. If money is truly no object you could check out some euro model 200s like Gas Gas and kTM. You may be able to get a good deal on a husky WR 125 as well.

Hey, just wanted to thank you guys for the advice. I read some reviews and other stuff, and heard nothing but good stuff about the KDX200. It's also perfect for the type of riding I'll be doing. 1 more question, when did they start making these? And since the price is a little steep for the brand new ones can someone give me an idea of a used one? Thanks.

Black Label,

The KDX in some form or another has been around longer than YOU have! Seriously, that should give you some idea as to the staying power of this model. Back in '95, they made some updates to the bike, and it hasn't changed significantly since then. You can find '98 and up models in good condition for $2000- $2500. Look for a bike that's been taken care of and treated nicely (oil & air filter serviced regularly), and your KDX will take care of you. :thumb:

Prices fall pretty quick with KDXs because they are so common. You should be able to find a nearly new one for half of new price. Stick with a bike that is close to stock. Some people can screw bikes over with aftermarket and custom mods. Ask the owner about maintenance schedules, type of oil they use, etc... If the bike has been raced you will get a better serviced bike from an expert than a novice. Do some research up front on the bike in the KDX forum to get some questions to ask. Look at the engine cases on the side to look to see if there is much wear from boots rubbbing. This indicates how much the bike has been ridden. Also look at the condition of the plastic. Is it still new looking. If you have an extra $40 or so take it to a dealer and have them check the compression and look over the bike. KDXs are very durable bikes but take your time to get the nicest bike for your dollar.

Black label, If your going with a kdx go with 95 or newer for sure. A pipe is all you need to really wake up the bike and have a great trail machine.

PS. Where do you live? I have a 97 kdx 220 I'm trying to sell. I'm located in BC, Canada which is pretty close to most Pacific Northwest states.

Posted by: Black Label---------------------

Thanks for all the help, I haven't really got to see one of em yet, there was 1 or 2 in the paper but were sold already. My main concern is if it will fit me good enough, although if I can ride it fairly well now, I'll be growing some next year.

-To the person that asked..I live in upstate NY.

Psssst colem, I would like to know more about your kdx!

A KDX IS GOOD AT FIRST THEN SWITCH TO A KTM AFTER A YEAR OR TWO
