D-36 Jackhammer

Who will be going? Hope this one doesn't get postponed.

Posted by: KXaggerator---------------------

I am ready for the fall/winter riding season . I might do the Dirt Diggers North Lilliputan H.S., but I dread the dust that is sure to be thick this time of year. I want to do some enduros and hare scrambles, but so far all I am really only looking at the Wilseyville H.S. (it kicked my butt last year), the Quick Silver National enduro, and the Wild Boar Enduro. Where is the Jackhammer and what is the terrain like?

I have only been riding my mt bike lately, so I need to get busy with some training and build up endurance.

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

FoxRacing,

I'm a "C" rider also. This enduro will not have a split course. I haven't been to the Stonyford area. From my experience, for most "C" riders, an enduro is ride as fast as you can for 6-7 hrs, and hope you don't hour out.

This is my third year riding enduro's. I have yet to "zero" a check. The closest I have come is 5 minutes late. Then again I'm speed challenged.

Maybe one of the Stonyford regulars will post a description of the area.

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

Mick and I will be there!

Bit concerned as well as this is my first "real enduro". Have done a couple of the family enduros and always had a blast. Just hoping it's not going to be too much harder.

Now that the hare scramble is cancelled, we'll be able to check the area out on Saturday which will be great. Haven't had the chance to get up to Stonyford yet. Where is everyone going to camp?

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

Stonyford has some great trails that all of us C riders can enjoy. There is a pretty big change in elevation so you get nice single track in the trees & some pretty good loose/steep/long hill climbs at the lower elevations. IMO Stonyford has more difficult trails than Middle Creek. Stonyford is also the place I get totally turned around - the map & trail signs do not correspond worth a darn.

Not sure if I'll be there or not.

Brian

Posted by: chasejj---------------------

Brian,
Whataya mean your not going to be there?
Someone has to be there to mop up my sorry ass at the 80 mile mark when I run out of steam aand every muscle is cramping up! :flame:

All the East Bay guys I know are wimping out on this one. Crying about dust or family commitments. Real Enduro riders just show up and ride, dammit!

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

Chase,
I won't be racing but I may show up to provide some heckling - er, support. Due to the uncertaintanty of my job I'm trying to eliminate the completely discretionary spending - read enduro entry fees. I'm thining about riding over from Middle Creek just visit everybody. I haven't been on my bike since Dave Wood's class at the beginning of August.... And there is just too much dust for my taste. Not that I'll right on somebody's rear wheel but I figure why beat myself up?

Brian

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

I'll be there. Jonala, Brian, et. al., we'll be camping at Davis Flat in the usual "Pug Racing" Wanderer fifth wheel. We are going up early Friday. Claudio Salusso will be staying in our camper. He's coming up Saturday. We'll look for any of the DRN crew, or you can look for us.

I'm anxious to try out my 400 nee 450 on the Stonyford trails. The enduro will definately be dusty. I remember last year, some areas were so dusty you had to stop and wait for the dust to clear. I hope it is not that bad this year. Also, last year, the trails were intermediate, but the club upped the speed averages which made you work pretty hard to stay on time. In previous years, this enduro was not as hard as some of the others.

That's great , to see that the Pug team will be there.

It's the only way I know how to ride an enduro, not having the luxury of zeroing a check.

I'll be coming up Saturday morning, I'll be looking for the Pug team. :thumb:

What happened at the Prime Time? I went to get you a tow & when I got back you were gone.

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

Does anyone have a route sheet? Can you post it? Thanks.

Got my number last nite, 83B , they didn't send a route sheet. I guess I'll to figure my Jart chart the old fashion way. :scream:

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

Farmer John, I pushed my bike off the hill to the right of the track, and it started. I found out later that one of the intake valve adjustments had tightened up. That's why it was so difficult to start and keep running. Oh well, there's the next race.

Thanks for coming back to get me.

Jim

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

OK John I'll be riding with you. I'm 83A.

Jim, John, Brian, Chase, Belinda, Mick and all the rest, see you there.

George

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

George, you missed out, I was the only on our minute at the start. I rode dust free for about 10'. You can imagine the conditions. :scream:

There was another guy on our minute. Very good rider, you would of had fun riding with him. Once he realized I really was slow, he took off.

See you at the 49er?

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

John, I didn't want to race because of the dust. Was there last weekend and it was bad. But that's not why I wasn't there. Woke up late and would of had to rush to make it so just stayed home instead. I'm on min. 49 for the 49er.

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

Fox,

Hope I didn't hold you up too much. On that long uphill, I thought the little XR was going to seize. I stopped part way up to switch to reserve. Thats the longest hill I can remember going up.

I ended the day with 70.73 points. Very good results for me. I lost 20 minutes after the 9 check just too tired to ride.

Mini and Brian, Thanks for the moral support, I would of quit at gas if it wasn't for your support. :thumb:

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

jonala, too bad i didn't see you. i entered early, so i was 61a. all things considered, i didn't get too much dust, since there were only two guys in front of me on minute 60, and they were the first c's.

i ended up with 28 pts. definitely the best i've ever ridden any kind of event. zero'd 2 checks, and took 1 or 2 pts at 3 more.

as i was coming down the long fun hill at the end, i had already passed the guys on minute 60, so i had clear sailing the whole way down. a little bit up from the bottom, i saw 2 guys going up the hill!!! backwards!! on a freaking race course!!! i yelled at them that there was a race coming at them. apparently one of them had a head-on shortly after that. not a real surprise considering the dust. i dunno what kind of complete moron would ride backwards on a race course.

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

Velosapiens,
I was on the 66 minute, and two guys on the same minute were friends (all of us were on Ktm's so we all talked at the breaks), one of the guys was on a 400 and was ahead of me just riding for fun (was 10 minutes early to several checks) and did get hit head on by one of those kids. Snapped his leg below the knee and put his brake lever into the engine. I stopped for a bit and gave him my camelback because he needed water.
Ended up costing me at least 8 points (ended with 35) but I'm appealing to Alan after a longtime A rider I go with said they will make adjustments if you stop to aid a rider. The people at the end of the race were basically "its a competition" and that's that.

I was ready to punch someone! Basically they said if you want to finish well, don't stop and help someone!

arg...but the poor guy was laying in the middle of the road! I was 4.5 minutes back at that point, gaining a little but think 4 points is fair...we'll see.

Was my first race on the my new 02 300 mxc....man, that thing is so good I felt like I was cheating!

boy howdy though, the dust on some of the first loop was dangerous, almost went off the fireroad halfway through because I couldn't see the damn road!
all in all I had much more fun that I expected with those conditions.

latest word I heard was next weekend will probably be cancelled...

....was on 66 minute, so I'm sure saw you guys (all black 300, white helmet)

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

Well what a weekend. Thanks everyone for making it such a blast. :thumb:

Mick had an awesome run and ended up with an eighteen after burning a couple of checks. Not too bad for his first enduro.

I didn't fair so well and houred out at the third check. Was going great enjoying all the changes we had made to my bike, managed to zero the first check, gained a few on the second check but got to one of the hills after that and was stopped by a bunch of guys stuck halfway up, took my bike back down to have another run and in the process managed to move my carburetor and stop the bike running. Two extremely helpful guys stopped, diagnosed the problem and got me running again. In the meantime, Kyra, who was the only other C womens competitor had passed me, so I started pushing it to catch up. Things kind of went down hill from there. Dropped the bike a number of times and tired my self out picking it back up again. So after a stack that ended with me landing on my exhaust pipe and burning my hand I stopped on the side of the hill and rested for awhile. Kyra rode up behind me, somehow I had passed her along the way, and we decided to hobble onto the next check, with another rider with a flat tire. We rode to the fourth check and then hopped back on the road.

All in all it was a great day. Bit dissapointing cause my aim was to finish but I still had a lot of fun and at least I know what to expect next time. So lets all hope for rain and we'll see ya at the next one!

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

yup, i was racing my ktm300exc for the first time. it was pretty excellent. i know what you mean about dust tho. one of the only places i got it really bad was on the first loop after the 3rd check i think, i almost sailed off the fire road twice. then i just started easing off a little bit. as it turned out, i didn't have to hurry at all because there was a free time section where i had to stop anyway. heh heh.

too bad about the guy who got hurt. i still can't believe those guys were dumb enough to ride the course backwards. mind-boggling!
mw

Posted by: LocoCD---------------------

I actually passed a couple of other riders in the first loop going the opposite direction. Waved them down and they were thankful. Evidently they didn't know a race was on... go figure. I will remind you that the club was explicit that this was not a closed course event and that 2-way traffic was possible anywhere on the course. Sure hate to hear about those kimds of injuries. Sometimes broken legs take forever to heal.

I started way back in the pack - row 99. Those hills were a mess when I got to them. Kind of makes you wonder how the track was before 150 bikes shedded it! Clearly I could have gone faster if they let me ride with the A Class .

Posted by: jho410---------------------

Those hills were a mess on row 1! (though I wouldn't know since I was on row 36).

ktmchick, what class is Mick in? 18 beats my 19 so I hope he's not in my class.

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

He entered in C 4-stroke

Brian - a real C rider

:whiner: ... but only cuz he wasn't in my class! :thumb:

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

Now Brian, be nice.

He is technically a C grader, he raced C grade in Aus and this enduro and the Prime Time are the first races he's done over here. Just with the way he's going at the moment he won't be a C grader for long

So watch out B grade

Posted by: jho410---------------------

If he had a real bike, I bet he'd do even better

Posted by: jclement---------------------

ya, now if you can only get your REAL bike to run right!

I was being nice....

I'd hate to see how fast he'd be on something besides the DRZ. Wait a minute - I wouldn't be able to see him. He'd be too far ahead of me.

How's the hand?

Brian

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

Brian, I would hate to see Mick on Belinda's bike. He might just jump to A and skip B.

My thoughts exactly.....

BTW - you're a slacker.

Brian

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

I was on minute 60, the guy on 66 had just passed me when I saw the dust cloud from the collision with the play rider. The poor guy was in a lot of pain. I narrowly avoided his buddy who was a little further back and warned him that he was riding into the face of 100 C riders racing down the hill - it had no impact on him. I got down to the road crossing and alerted the rescue guys who were there. It probably cost me a couple of minutes, but no big deal in the grand scheme of things. I probably lost more time by riding conservatively after that, something about the sight of a misaligned lower leg made me think twice about hammering it.

See that won't happen. I need every advantage I can get! Plus he had the chance to buy any bike he wanted, but he loves his Suzuki. It's indestructable and cheap on parts, which suits his riding style.

BTW Brian, my hand is a lot better. I was lucky to get some burn cream on it when I did, thanks to the awesome people at Check 4!

By the way, is Manzanita a Spanish word for for a bush with Iron Pipe as it's branches? Anyone else rub up against these fun little shrubs?

There's a reason I carry a folding saw in my backpack.... It's name is manzanita.

I'm still waiting for somebody to show me where in the AMA rulebook it says the shortest club member shall be the person to clear the course of low hanging branches :whiner:

That's nothin' ... you ever been to Clear Creek?

Yep. I rode the Wild Piglet in the spring. Got behind GSR on the single track part of the second loop. What she cleared or hit with the top of her helmet came swinging back at me about neck high. Talk about duck & cover....

Brian

I saw this Mick guy ride at the Prime Time in SJ. This guy will be in and out of the B class within 3 races. He came from the last row and won the overall easilly. I talked to him briefly afterwards. Seems like a pretty nice guy, thank God he doesn't race in my class.

If you want, move yourself up a class. You're ready!

Clear Creek Rules!

Does anyone know the particulars on Kevin Ruffoni's broken ribs? He is in the same club as I am. All I heard was that he clipped a log in the dust, rode to the next check & then to his truck. HE got a Helo ride due to fears that he ruptured his spleen, but it ended up being okay. I was wondering which section he did it in.....

From what I heard he did it just before check 4 in that single track with the shoulder height manzanita bush.

Thanks angry Jim He got an awesome start at the Prime Time and he said that all he could hear was a 4 stroke behind him so he kept pushing it harder! He's just trying to get enough points to move to B class and then see how he goes next season.

Hey we're aussies! Can't help but be nice. Just don't get in front of him when your racing

Jim, I thought you were a B.
How about dancing up some rain.

Posted by: angry jim---------------------

Jonala

I've been in B class for a year. Mick rode the C class at the Prime Time.

I'll whip up a rain dance for ya bud!

I don't know how I'd ever get in front of old Mick. If I do it's probably cause he's on the ground. Nice flag on your rear fender by the way. Yeah, you Aussies are alright.

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Hi, everyone!
I just wanted to say that it was nice seeing you all at Stonyford. Although I didn't ride in the race, I had a good time at the camp.

Jonala, I'm glad to know that you finished the race. Buzz was fine as usual while you were gone.

Bigbird, it was nice meeting you. I really liked the set up around your trailer. If I find you and Nancy next time, I want to camp next to you again!

Ktmchick, I hope your burn wasn't so bad. And I look forward to riding with you soon!

NVR FNSH, it was good to see you again. You looked extremely clean in the crowds! People might have thought you were on minute 1!!!

RetSenior, I was disappointed that you weren't there.....I could have given you a wake-up call!

To the rest of you who were there and I didn't get to meet, I hope to meet you sometime soon.

Lots of folks very proud of both you and Kyra for your efforts! Me included

Prelim results are up.

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

Mick wins C overall, without a clock! Way to go Mick.

Mark Weaver trophied the C Senior class. Mark you have been practicing :thumb:

Posted by: jho410---------------------

He is a ringer! Don't collect $200, don't pass Go and advance directly to "A 4 stroke"! 18 points without a computer puts him competitively in A. Anything less is cheatin'!

Nice race.

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

I'm never stopping to help anyone ever again! Cost me 6 places in overall and 2 in class! The organizers and ref's didn't seem to care I spent 8 minutes helping the guy that broke his leg!
arg..I'm so feakin upset I'm going to chew on some eletrical cords or something...

as long as they are plugged in.

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

Yey Mick!

Mick's No 1 fan!

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Hi, wcmc831!

I was very impressed that you helped the injured guy during the race.
The guy must have been very grateful for your help.
I know you lost something for helping the others, but at least you got my respect. You are a brave man!!!

Yes, I agree. It was the right thing to do and you probably would have felt bad about it later on. Don't chew too hard on those electrical cords Seriously, I am also impressed by your actions.

Yeah Mark!! (Velosapiens)

Yeah Mick!!!

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

Congrats to Mick on the C Overall. I'll say to him something I don't think I have said to many enduro riders, much less C riders: Buy an enduro computer!!!!! Grats also to Belinda for pulling in a 1st in her first real enduro! :thumb:

Quote:

Look at it this way, what you gave up in trophy points you got back tenfold in karma points. And karma > trophy.

Quote:

Look at this from the club's perspective: you know you helped the guy, and how long you spent there. But does anyone else? Was anyone paying attention to who stopped? Not likely, they were trying to help the guy, not take a census. You totally did the right thing by helping, don't beat yourself up over it!

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

ya, I know it was the right thing to do, and most people would have done it as well. At the time I felt pretty good about it....then I saw the results and I was back to being upset.

I just need to realize it's only the lousy C class, it's my first year, and I just have to work harder so it doesn't cost me any places.

Cera, I absolutely see your point. I can either look at it as it's just c class in a local enduro so why wouldn't they believe me, or as Alan P said, basically that's the only way they can ensure consistency.

If I hadn't talked to the guy and he hadn't been on my minute I probably woudn't have stopped...we've all ridden by forelorn riders looking like they need help, but didn't stop. No bid deal...

anyway, thanks guys, now if someone could just call that bart bakker guy and tell him I actually beat him and he needs to send me his trophy ;-)

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

Like I said earlier - friggin' sand bagger.....

Brian

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

they finally posted the final results of the jackhammer and got my score right. that's me in 6th overall, 11 pts or so behind the sandbagging aussie.
-mark

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

"so behind the sandbagging aussie"

Hey Mark, aren't you sandbagging in the "C", you should be an "A" rider yourself. Another lesson with Dave, you would then be riding "AA".

Congratulations on the sixth place very impressive.

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

heh heh. considering my first couple enduros, i can't be sandbagging yet. if i get a decent place in another race, i'll believe this one wasn't a fluke, and i'll probably just move myself up to B. i'd rather finish mid-pack in b's than get trophies in c's.

one thing i found from mountain biking is that i could just go alot faster and have more fun racing sport or expert class than racing beginner because i stopped getting stuck behind people. especially since i'm not one of those super aggressive types that will elbow someone out of the way to pass. maybe i just need to learn how to pass quickly and safely.
