gas leak

i have a slight gas leak coming from my vent hoses on the carburetor but only when it is in the shed...i turn the gas off and once drained the gas from the carburetor and it still leaked..a small sized soaked spot where there is gas on the floor of the shed...is it a leaky main needle high float level or leaky petcock maybe????

In theory,
The main needle should stop the glass flow of a stopped engine regardless of the shut off.
In reality, I doubt that most folks leave the shutt off on longer than a few hours when not riding.

My dads KDX 200 did the same thing. We just rebiult and cleaned the petcock, and now its fine.

well i concluded that it has to be the petcock but i took it apart and clened it to find no problems

dr72 it sounds like 2 problems to me.The shutoff and the float control valve (needle/seat).There could be a o ring bad in the shutoff then flowing through the carb due to the valve leaking?I'm thrown because it's going through the carb to get to the shed floor???

Posted by: dirtryder72---------------------

yeah but i took thge petcock apart and the or ing was in good shape wasnt cracked split worn or dry rotted but the only way i see to fix it is to put an orng in it thats i tiny bit larger

Posted by: gooby---------------------

You can get guts for the valve i think or replace the valve .You still have an issue to deal with....why is it going through the carb to the floor,it shouldn't do that?good luck

you can easily replace that o-ring with a 10cent o-ring from a hardware store, if that is what the problem is, but sounds like to me, if it's dripping from the carb, then the petcock is fine.

sounds like a sticky float in your carb. or one that is improperly adjusted. take your carb. apart and check the float height.

no your not hearing me correctl....it has to bne leaking form the petcock....i shut off the gas...drained the bowl...and it still leaked ou the vent hoses...in conclusion it all goes back to a leaking petcock...and once i took the petcock apart the only part that could be bad was the o ring so seems i need to replace it and if it doenst work then ill put one in a slight bit larger

Dirtryder, did you fix your gas leak problem? I have the same issue with MY 87 KDX 200. Like you, I drained all the gas out of the bowl and came back a few hours later and it kicked right over. It MUST be coming from the petcock, but I don't see it...I was thinking about getting an in line fuel shut-off...

shawn10ski, have you tried replacing the o-rings in the fuel tank petcock?
