Starting Gate?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 380EXCman---------------------

What would you all think if we made a 2 bike starting gate for the up hill drags. We could make it totally portable maybe take it out friday and pick it up on sunday. A bunch of us had a blast last year dragging up that hill. I think it would be cool if we had a gate to drop. What you guys think? We could get dave186 (yes you) to build it .

Posted by: dave186---------------------

ill have it done tommorow. unless you want an air operated one like at cooperland.... actually it sounds like a fun project. for drag racing maybe we should rig up a tree with electronic timing and everything

Posted by: 380EXCman---------------------

The "tree and electronic timing" might be a little much, but the gate is very doable.....

Seems like a single elimination DRN hill climb drag championship could be in the making.... Sounds like great fun for spectators and racers!

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Dirt Bike Dave, does your post mean you are 'in'??

Posted by: 380EXCman---------------------

Oh he is in...... Its the lure of the desert.....

It calls us. Once you get a taste it will eventually consume you. Until one day you discover you cant live with out it. Like a heroin addict needs its methadone clinic.....

Sounds good to me. This time we should match up by bike size. My little 125 can't hang with the bigger bikes. I ned to have a fighting chance.

Going to try, but I am in the 'definite maybe' category.

If you can pry them away from the trails, I would like to see a hill climb drag race between MR WR's GasGas 200 and Angry Jim's KTM 200.

Perhaps classes can be organized by skill, displacement and 'grudge match'?

I went to one of the NAHA hillclimbs a few years ago and it was great fun to see ONE bike go up the hill against the clock. A starting gate for two climbers would be great fun to watch!

Posted by: Strick---------------------

I would really like to see you there, DBD.

And I already know who would win the hillclimb between those two

Posted by: GETMETOCA---------------------

Dirt Bike Dave, I really hope you can make it! BTW, I already know how to get to Reno, imagine that!

dave186, hows the progress on the start gate? Sounds like a good idea, thanks!

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

I will certainly try to be there!

Strick - You bleed orange, so that might bias your predicition!

Yes it's true; orange blood.

What is that old saying? " It's the bike not the rider?"

Posted by: dave186---------------------

well, im still designing on the starting gate. 380 doesnt want no redneck farmer stuff, so I gotta put some time into it. it will be done by Feb. for sure.

Posted by: biglou---------------------

Dave-I have access to steel and benders if you want some U-shaped gates just like MX. Let me know and I should be able to hack something together. The drop and hinge mechanisms will have to be handled on your end, along with any welding. Of course, I could do it all here, but then I sure would hate to ship it off! Let me know what you think.

Posted by: dave186---------------------

havent quite decided on the bending part. I have access to the equipment, its just finding time to get there... I'll keep you in mind though Lou.

I will have a little talk with your boss and see if he can give you some time off. With pay of course....

Posted by: angry jim---------------------

Hey "eye candy" , I will pay to see you on a 77' honda 50!

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

If dirt bike dave is a 'definite maybe' then count me in as a 'definite maybe' too. Plus I would like to see a hill climb drag race between MR WR's GasGas 200 and Angry Jim's KTM 200 too.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

It's Nevada, so betting is legal.

Posted by: angry jim---------------------

Lets see: Mr WR/angry jim comparison.
1. We both ride 200's
2. We're both Raider fans
3. Our birthdays are 3 days apart. Scorpios of course!
4. We both live for hardcore singletrack.
5. We both are roughly the same size.
6. We can be extremely jingoistic.
7. We arent very patient.

Differences
1. Ktm/Gas Gas
2. Mr WR-ex marine/aj-long haired slacker
3. Mr WR-about to be in SR class/aj-middle aged VET classer

Let the betting begin ladies and gentlemen. Looks too close to call from hear .

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

I want to see the hill before I make my bet. But if Strick will give me 2:1 odds, I might have to take the Gas Gas (sorry, Jim). Are we talking best 2 out of 3 or one shot, winner take all?

Jim, since there betting on us, all proceeds go towards beer and chow

Since I'm getting older and slower I get a bit of ahead start right?

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Dirt Bike Dave you are on 2:1, and I get the orange bike (nothing personal Rick - the KTM is just faster). That means Dave.....you have to come and see it. None of this internet betting stuff --> O.K.?

Posted by: E-Ticket---------------------

I've got $10 that says "The Ant" can beat "CJ" on WhoopHill.

Susan says, "... the only way that is going to happen is if CJ doesn't show up."

Dang.... she's thinkin' like a girl again. No problem - I've got 3 months to whip her into a frenzy and a take-no-girlfriends/prisoners frame of mind.

(grin) Man, Moon Rocks is going to rock this year..... E-Ticket

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

How about an OPEN 200 race up the hill. I wanna run GSR's KTM in this thing

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

And I wanna see TTRGuy on GSR's KTM go against Kevin on Kali's Gas Gas.

Let's see......Switzerland has more mountains than Netherlands....so angry jim has the advantages? Well, I think I have to see you guys on the bikes first!

Those whoops on the hill are annoying. I lost momemtum after going 2/3 of the hill on my XR200 and had to turn around last time. I can't wait to try again on my KDX!

Ditto that, plus I freaked the first time I went up not realizing that if you didn't slow down or make a turn, you were going to go straight back down the backside in a hurry! :scream:
The solid rock at the top was kind of scary too. I almost wiped out when my back tire started sliding on it.
I'm just going to be so glad to be riding somewhere that doesn't have trees!!

True dat, true dat. trees are of the devil!

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

I think that we need a "special test" type course too.

Something around the Moonrocks and less than 5 minutes long.

I'll take that bet! :thumb:

(no offense Ant, but I'd be sleeping on the couch for weeks if I voted any other way)

That would be fun

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Kiwi - fill me on on Special test course. I know I can set something ready, but I need to know what you have in mind.

Yesterday was the annual Moonrocks race - very technical (36 mile loops). There are a couple of ravines that are close together that are drop-off, after drop-off, after drop-off. Is this the kind of special test, or are you thinking a trials event with non-trials bikes?

I think we should hill climb some of the Sandy uphills out there. Oh, maybe not. The under 250cc class would not be happy. :whiner:

<-------------- Ya see that? I aint skeered. And if for some reason I don't make it on the first try than I'll go with.........................

>>Rudy Rudager voice on<<
"I can do it coach. Let me try again."
>> Rudy voice off<<

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

I'm thinking a spectator event with a couple of the little goat trails around the rocks and a couple of the whooped trails - lots of turns, a little technical, a little fast. All within easy viewing from the rocks and nothing that most people couldn't do. Something to equalize the bike sizes and make it more rider ability and fun for all.

Posted by: Strick---------------------

One word - Whoops! The great equalizer. I say we run a timed whoop section. Then I think Thumbs (Rudy) will have me a little concerned.

Posted by: 380EXCman---------------------

Yeah lets do a timed whoop section.... Im all for that.
A trials type slow technical race would be cool as well.

Gate update - Dave has given me a list of materials he needs. Once I get the materials, Im guessing he will start building it in about a month.

actually i tink part of it is already done!

Posted by: MR.WR---------------------

Strick & Kiwi,

I think a special test course would be fun! Count me in!!

Rick

Posted by: E-Ticket---------------------

Hey CSL.... you're on!

I'll start calling around for prices on bleachers and a concession stand.

(grin)

And good ideas on the timed, special course! Keep it short, keep it in view, one short section of whoops, one really tight section, one "fun" section. Make it doable for all .... the "competitors" will take care of it being interesting.

Nope. No competitive people here, boss! (grin)

Posted by: Strick---------------------

DEEP GNARLY SAND WHOOPS --> Fun for all

Posted by: E-Ticket---------------------

At a minimum, make the course come at *least* come close to one tree for us Northerners.... (grin)

Ok, but I gotta admit, this whole nitrous-on-a-KX100 thing is purely experimental at this point...

Hey... you won't know until you try.
