KDX vs RT180

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, I realize this might be a sToOpId question, especially for this forum but..... From what I've been able to tell there must be a BIG difference between a KDX200 and a Yammy RT180. Anyone have any first hand experience?

Posted by: toalco-kdx---------------------

i've ridden an rt180 and a kdx 220 and the kdx is much better. the rt180 compares to the xr200 pretty good and the kdx200 is much like a xr400.

I had a 180 before my kdx and you may save a few $ but the suspension is soo much better on the kdx it will save you from many possible wrecks and healing time the 180 was too stiff and cheap feeling when crossing ruts and it worked against you, you have to slow down all the time and be extra careful I would never ever recommend the 180 to anyone the kdx is much safer and faster and less viberation just don't even think 180 anymore, save yourself, I believe in living debt free but before I would ride a 180 again I would go to the bank and borrow some $$

Brakes suck also, bike feels way outdated,I also had a xr200 at that time and speed wise they seemed to be identical.

The RT180 is essentially a 1978 IT175 with new plastic. It IS way outdated.

That's exactly how I saw it. No wonder Yamaha discontinued it. Thanks for the confirmation.

The search for a '95+ KDX is still on and I'm hot on the trail of one as I type. Problem is, it's 550 miles away!

If someone had to choose between the XR200 and the RT180 I would choose the RT180.

Also why didn't Yamaha bump the RT180 up to a RT200 because it almost the same motor in the Blaster?

When did Yamaha stop making them?

gwcrim - i thohght that i saw several late model KDX's in/near Ohio last week when i looked. Have you looked in the DRN For Sale forum?

Posted by: gwcrim---------------------

I've been looking here, the Cycle Trader, and Ebay for the most part. Since we're heading into the off season for riding, I'm gonna be a bargain shopper and try to find a real nice one for under $2000. There are a few that pop up now and then but none close to home. Though I live in Ohio, I actually live 45 miles from dahntahn Pittsburgh, PA.

The IT175 did evolve into the IT200 in the early '80s. The final versions had a more advanced frame & suspension than the current late 70's style RT180. The reason Yamaha stopped making them is the '83-'85 KDX200 was generally better liked and sold much better, though the IT was pretty similar in capabilities. A WR200 Yamaha air cooled 2 stroke was sold for a few years in the '90's - I think the motor was very similar to the Blaster.

Some of the single shock, twin carb XR200R's from the early '80's might be better than the RT180, but for the most part I will agree that the RT is probably faster than the little XR.

I'm showing my age - back in '77 the IT175 was my dream bike.

The RT180 is a great learning or bike to lend to visiting friends. You can find them pretty reasonable priced compared to the XR200. If you have any experience on bikes, you'll want to go with the KDX.

My Dad bought an 81 IT175 many years ago to try to get into riding with me. That bike was much faster than my friend's XR200. I actually had a lot of fun on that bike.

A buddy of mine got an RT180. It was a pretty lousy bike. He blew out a couple of wheels an jumps that weren't that big.

I SMOKED AN XR 200 WITH A RT 180 WITH A SLAPPING PISTION "WIFES BIKE" WAS IT RIDER ? BUT AFTER A .060 OVERBORE THE RT POWER SEEMED TO MUCH FOR THE CHASSIS..ALSO MUD CLOGS IN THE REAR OF THE 180..GO FOR THE KDX LESS SKETCHY
