Greetings,
I currently own a 1987 XR250R. I just got done rebuiling the top end of the engine. The bike runs great and I really like the bike. I ride mainly in the woods and there are times where the bike controls me from its weight. (I am 5'8'', 145lbs) I was thinking about going to a 125 two-stroke. Is this a good idea? Will this bike work well for the woods (I have ridden two-strokes in the woods before) by giving me enough power or is this going to small??
If this is a good idea what should I look at? (I know that Kawasaki has 2 types of two-strokes; the KDX is more for trails and the KX is more moto, can you help with all the letters)
Thanks

A 125 will have enough power if you dont mind clutching it a lot. You just need to be prepared for the fact that a 125 two stroke is a TOTALLY different bike, youll adapt but i think you should ride one before you buy one so you know what your getting into, i would look into the kdxs if you really like the woods.

You may want too take a look at a yz250f, its 4-stroke mx bike..

What is the difference between the yz250 and my 250? Is there that much of a difference in the weight? I have ridden some two strokes in the woods before. My father in-law has an 85 KDX200.
Do the different manufacturers use different letters for their two strokes like Kawasaki does? (to help distinguish between a woods bike and one more for moto)
Thanks

The only similarities between the yz250f and your xr 250 start and stop at the fact they are both 4 strokes.

Let me show my ignorance being out of the loop for awhile. Can someone give me some stats/info on the yz250f or where I can find detailed info?
Thanks

FYI - There is a YZ 250 (2-stroke) and a YZ250F (4-stroke)
The 250F is probably about 25-30lbs lighter than your bike, about 2-3 inches taller at the seat and has about 20 more HP than your bike. The suspension is setup for MX and will feel about 10 times stiffer than the XR's.
While your XR might control you sometimes because of its weight, the 250F will control you with its power. If you like the woods, it's my opinion that the 250F is bigtime overkill.
A 125 2 stroke has all of the above characteristics of the 250F. The only difference is that the power curve is not very woods friendly...you'll be in first gear alot and use lots of clutch.
Check out a KDX, KTM EXC or RMX 250. Those are probably your best bet. They have less weight, more power, cushy suspension and smooth power curves.
Good luck!

noway a 250F would stomp all over a 125 in the woods take it from someone who's last 5 bikes have been 125's who just got a 250F. A 125 isn't that hard to ride in the woods it might be at first but once you learn that being in the proper gear or having proper gearing on the bike helps hugely you don't have to slip the clutch that much. The only times I found myself hating being on a 125 was when I was in tight snail speed trails and had to climb a massive hill and had like zero momentum. But you should be some what use to that cause I'm sure you've found yourself in that situation before on the XR. Even then technique will be more of a factor than how much power you got between your legs and I find it easier to keep up a 125's momentum in the woods compared to a 250's cause you can snake between trees etc easier cause of its lightness and agility. It won't get quite as clumbsy as easyly like a 250 + size bike can and its easier to wrestle, man handle a 125 over rocks. I could always ride my 125's longer at a faster pace in the woods than when I had 250's and it was tons easier to keep up the pace compared to a big bore. Each bike will always have its pro's and con's IMO I feel that 250's only advantage is it's torque and power off the bottom. A 200 is usually the best of both you get the similar lightness of a 125 and its agility but with the better torque bottom of a 250. Definetly try and take a ride on each and then decide.
