KDX200/220 vs 400cc thumpers

I'm sure this has been asked lots but I still dont know the answer. My current ride is an 83 KDX 200 which I love. However the suspension is so outdated that its holding me back lots. The motor produces enough high end zip to be satisfying and enough low end torque to make any guy on an XR peeved. (they just hate it when I go up a goat trail slower than their bike can!) I'm a big guy, about 200 lbs, and I ride hairy technical mountail trails with occasional open road blasts, tight woods, etc. I want smooth low end torque like a baby wants it's plug. Reliability is a must as well. So spit some opinions. Does the KDX 200 or 220 have the kind of low end torque I'm wanting?
here's my list of priorities
1)Reliability - KIPS valve??
2)smooth low end torque
3)plenty of mid and top end
4) good suspension
5) light weight

Sounds like a modern (1995+) KDX 220 or 200 will be your icing on the cake. I rode a 2002 XR 400 and my KDX had way better and more power IMO. The forks and brakes were awesome on the XR, but you could feel the weight of the bike while weaving through the tight woods. Sounds like a KDX or KTM would fufill your needs.

I say get a KDX. The horsepower of a KDX, Gas Gas, or KTM 200 is a little less than a 400 but so is the weight. I used to ride a 1984 IT 200 and to this day I have not found a bike larger than a 200 that I liked more. I rode CR 500s, DRZ400s, KTM 520s but there is nothing like throwing a 200 around tight wooded trails. Also, I see that you are from Boulder. I assume you ride Rampart Range a lot. That is where I grew up and rode for more than 12 years. After I sold my 200 I was never as fast on those trails.

Actually I have never been to Rampart. I hear it's too crowded on weekends to get in a good ride. I ride mountain trails I've found west of Boulder. How do modern 2strokes do with altitude changes? I go from 8000 to 12000 ft in 1 hr and I'd rather not have to stop and rejet.

Do not be afraid of a 250. They can be nice in the woods. Just my opinion. I went from 2 KDX within a year to the CR. I hear 99 KX 250's are also good, but if you are riding the thickest of thick all the time the the KDX or KTM trails bikes are very good. I just really like making my CR into an enduro. It is currently slowly becoming that way. I just found the suspension for Michigan riding better for me. Just wanted to share with you. Thanks....
