4 or 2 stroke?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I love the power of two strokes and want to race next year for the first time. However, I do a lot of trail riding also. What would be a good bike for me next. I'm thinking (would like to get) an RM125.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

What kind of racing are you going to do??
Are you planning on having a seperate bike for trail riding and another for racing?

I wouldnt get an rm 125 if you plan on trail riding. Something like a ktm 200 would be a lot better on trails and probably still good on a mx track.

I agree, I have been on a ktm 200 in the woods and it works good. It also has a lot of pep if you are wanting to some on a mx track. :thumb:

for woods I wouldn't recommend anything under a 200 enduro 2-stroke or 250 mx 2-stroke. Just not enough low end in a 125.

Tell that to Shane Watts.

I know several people who race 125's in HS and Enduro's and do just fine. It just comes down to personal preference.

Sure, and if your preference is a trail 90, then that can probably be ridden in the woods too.

I've ridden a 125 in the woods for many years its all about what you prefer and technique being the biggest factor. I could probably smoke you on an 80 out in the trails at reiters Kev. Take your smack talk some where else. This isn't WWE!

In the NCHSA there is a guy who races an XR100 b/c his knee can't handle kicking over much larger bikes. He smokes most people in his class (I think it is 4-strk B but not really sure).

Like I said, it comes down to personal preference.

This thread isn't about smack talk so please contribute with something that will help or don't post.

Lighten up guys. Just prodding a bit.

This forum is easy to get out of control so I'm pretty anal about it.

I guess I'm saying "no prodding upon entry."

If you are going to race Mx and do some trail riding I think a YZ 250F may be the right bike. Frankly a 200 will be out of place in MX if you want to advance past Novice. If you want a 2 stroke motocrosser chose a 250. Power is a bit more managable on the trail. Shane Watts and Fred Hoess do ride and win off-road on 125s but they are experts in their classes and have factory support to make their bikes perform based on track/trail conditions. A 125 will handle anything thrown at it but you better be good.

Tigerowner,
I had a KTM 200 MXC that was modded by Pro circuit and it was an awesome Vet package for moto. No problems winning and I am way past Novice. It was a great blend of 125 handling and not quite 250 power. If you are an aggressive rider it is a great package. The only place where it was at a disadvantage was uphill starts, however it was so quick and nimble that it was easy to make up the lost ground. Just look at the 200 SX for '03!

I didn't say that racing a 200 could not be done. In vet or novice classes they are fine (and I am not degrading your skills as a vet). I do see that you have moved to a 250 and I assume it matches the competition better (there is not a 200 class). If a person wants to take motocross seriously and compete it is best to buy a bike that fits in a class.

Now Enduro racing is another story. For me there is no other bike better in the woods than a 200.
