McGrath's KTM is really a Yamaha

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Check out www.motocrossactionmag.com Look at the "what's wrong with this picture?" This looks like an advertisement for one industries but look closely. What appears to be a KTM is really an orange Yamaha. Someone took one of his last years photos and altered the blue into orange. Check out the KTM on his jersey. It matches the wrinkle very well. That's definetly not a KTM fender or numberplate and the radiator looks suspiciously close to the one on my YZ250. Also it has an AMA tech sticker on the #plate although McGrath is yet to race an AMA event aboard a KTM.

Pretty sneaky........
Hope I didn't spoil it for anyone.

Well if this is a true pic, then all you can say is that bud is on orange for whatever it is worth...

Haha... good catch osheen! Looks like One Industries wanted to get out something showing their top rider on his new ride... for their '03 catalog, but they didn't have any good photos to work with yet. So someone played photoshop to make things work in the meanwhile

Posted by: nikki---------------------

Funny, too, because he's wearing the '02 Thor AST stuff (which is now dead). Considering that the new '03 Thor gear was out well before MC started publically riding KTMs.

How do you guys know all this stuff?

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

Elementary, my dear Wes Baca, elementary.

Posted by: VintageDirt---------------------

I like you too dear. I'll talk to you later, check your email

Look under the AST logo on his leg, next to the words Tech 8 on his boots. You can see his yamaha patch.

Some people have WAY too much time on their hands.

Posted by: KawiKid464---------------------

Seriously how could you remember all that!

Posted by: Kiwi MX---------------------

OK...now u people r just plain scary...

AHAAAAA so can u confirm the conspiracy theory involving Mr McGrath and the legendary "Long Rod" YZ he was racing till recent years?
Rumor has it way down under that he used to use an older model YZ instead on the re engineered YZ models so he could still run the "Long rodded" engines of old ("95 model I think). Truth or pipe dreams designed to confuse us Island folk?

Posted by: osheen---------------------

I probably wouldn't have noticed if they wouldn't of said what's wrong with the picture. The first thing that did catch my eye was the front number plate wasn't KTM's infamous diamond shape plate and then the AMA tech sticker and then it being dark in the background indicating that it was taken at a SX race (in which he hasn't done on a KTM).

Oh the marvels of today's technology................

Posted by: JPIVEY---------------------

Something isn't right with the Radiator, I thought all KTM filled on the left, and what with the Red tint everywhere, on the Rad, T clap.........Hmmmmmm

Posted by: kiwi_925---------------------

Kiwi i heard the same thing and it was cos the older YZ's mad more power top end than the newer ones.

Posted by: ScottZX7RR---------------------

What they used to say was that he ran a '97 motor in the newer frames as he liked the power characteristics of that motor. And the mags stated that he wasn't the only one that like the '97 motor as Yamaha went back to that baseline in 2000 if I am correct on the year.

Posted by: osheen---------------------

Say what? The 99 + motor is completly different from the 98 and prior years. The old motor would not fit in a 99+ chassis without major frame mods. It would be very obvious too as they look very different. When MC first rode Yamahas in 98 he used a cylinder from a 94 which was better to start with and had more potenial than the 95-98 cylinders. It was a common mod that alot of people did over that period of years because the 96-97 YZ250s were dogs.

But what does any of that have to do with One Industries making MC's 02 Yamaha orange for an advertisement?

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

I think its about the concept of deception.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Damn--being a KTM rider, I shoulda' caught the radiator cap thing right off the bat!
