how to enjoy an enduro??

hey guys, tell me something,, I'm switching over to woods riding from mx,,,,
do most of you drive to the race and get there just before race time, race, then drive home?
That sounds more like work than play.
I would think that the best way to enjoy it is to stay in a hotel the nite before and hopefully ride the course the day before and hang out with other riders around the track on a practice day. what kind of race/drive/sleep schedule do most of you guys do for a race?

All the enduros that I have been to (not many) you can't practice. Its not allowed. There might be a test area that you can test your jetting, but riding the course is not allowed. Traveling the day before (most do) and getting camp or staying in the hotel is a good idea. Our club hosts and enduro every year and they start rolling in on friday night and most of the day Saturday for the race on Sunday. It just depends on were they come from. Meeting the other riders ,especialy the guys on your row if there numbers are on the bike, is always fun . The distance traveled would have the most effect on your schedule. If the drive time is only a few hours you would have more time for socializing, but if they are like 9 hrs away (some of our races in the circuit are) than its pretty much travel, sleep, race, travel. Staying up late and drinking beer before the night before the race makes for a long and tiring race all though some can do it, but not me.

Hey what part of north MS are you from. I am in memphis. I do enduros from Birmingham,AL to Oklahoma City, OK

like danman said - pre-riding a enduro trial is not allowed (even as much as two to three weeks prior to the event ) . We usually travel on Friday nights, to wake up fresh Saturday morning. My son races on Saturday's (kids event) and we both race on Sunday. It is a full weekend! We stay in our enclosed trailer at the race site ( alot better than having to pack up everything , go to the hotel and then come back the next morning). There is a ride coming up this weekend at Mapplesville AL. shouldn't be to far from you if you live in North Miss. give it a try!

Welcome to enduro's! They are alot of fun ! I have a rule of thumb - if I can get there in less than 4 hours I drive that morning, if not I drive the day/night before.
As previously mentioned - no pre-rides, that is part of riding enduros. Treat the first few as a trail ride and learn the basics :thumb: .

Have Fun!

My best advise is after the first 40 miles of an enduro you may start to feel to tired to finish. The problem is that you are in the middle of the woods and you don't know how to get out. What I usually do is hit a tree and knock yourself out. Next thing you know the medics have carried you out of the woods and you wake up in a warm bed with cute nurses around you.

swingarm - LOL!

I like to travel the day before, ride a bit, camp/socialize, race the next morning, drive home that late afternoon. 4 hours or less away. I usually don't stay in hotels because its more fun to camp plus there's the issue of bike security.

I've never been to an enduro where you're allowed to ride the day before. Then again different districts/sanctioning bodies have different rules. The four-hour rule is nice, but it also depends on key time. In the south and warmer climates, enduros have a key time of 8:00 a.m. In the midwest, most enduros had a 10:00 a.m. key time. New England enduros have a 9:00 a.m. key time.

For long distance and/or early key time enduros I've stayed in hotel/motels, I've slept in my truck and I've slept on the ground underneath an EZ-up. I usually don't have the energy and/or time to deal with a campsite.

I really don't mind driving the morning of an enduro and then driving home. Usually I'll travel to a race with other riders. This makes it nice in case someone gets injured. Sometimes I'll try to pry my spouse out of bed in the wee hours, but this plan seldom works.

I usually drive there the day before camp over nite race then drive home that afternoon.Only ran 2 ecea races this yr, first one, made mistake of trying to stay perfectly(close to my minute)my big xr650r wore me out dnf'd that event.2nd event treated it somewhat like a trailride ended up finishing it.dropped alot of points but ended up 2nd c-open.

hey ktm king,, im from tupelo, about 100 miles southeast of you.
Thanks for all the input guys,, I think it would be coolest to have a campsite at the course so i could talk to other riders more.
I need to meet some people around here that can go riding with me on overnite trips, there is a club called bushwackers here that may can help... anyway,, thanks for the input....

I've done it all:

Drove there the morning of the race......ok if race is close
Drove there the night before, stayed in hotel......gets expensive, but fun
Drove there night before...slept in truck....cheapest, easiest...lousy sleeping
Drove there night before....slept in tent with buddy...fun...cheap
Drove there night before.....slept in travel trailer......not cheap to own or pull to race but is the very convenient and it makes the wife happy to be able to sleep in the next morning when I'm up early getting ready.

Sleeping in a tent is never fun.

Up here it's either hot, cold, or wet but, IMO, never fun.

I do use my enclosed box trailer for camping sometimes. Unload the bikes and set up the cot. Even that can be too hot or too cold. But not wet.
