D-36 Cowbell Enduro

So who is going??

Can anyone tell us what to expect. We haven't ridden at Middle Creek before so have no idea about the terrain. What type if race is it usually?

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

The Cowbell is usually a good one, the course should feature a lot of the same type of trails as the Jackhammer, with the exception of Pine Mountain. Pine Mountain is private land that is only legally ridden at the Cowbell - they use it for a 20 mile special test of tight, virgin terrain. Good stuff! They also sometimes use a long, killer downhill near the end. Overall, the Cowbell, in my opinion, uses more technical terrain than the Jackhammer, with lower speed averages - but plenty high enough to put points on your scorecard.

Dust WILL be a factor...

Has the club posted the route sheet anywhere?

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

I'm really considering this event since I have 4 day weekend. What do you seasoned dust warriors do when the dust is so thick you can't see? Blindly hold throttle or pull over till cloud dissipates?

I for one pull over when I can't see. what's interesting is when you catch up with someone, their dust isn't bad. But when someone passes you the dust is thicker. I can't figure that one out. :whiner:

Les, doesn't that 450 come with auto trail guidance, and all you have to do is twist the throttle.

I'm bringing a dust mask again.

I hope to be there.

Cowbell?
The riding at Middle Creek was awesome. Like Georgetown-being in the lead was great. Riding with two was great. We road trails 17, 37 to 6 and looped back to Penny Pines on Sunday with 57 miles. Monday we rode up 1 to 8 and made our way to 38. Looped that trail. Then returned on 25, 26, 15, 10 to Sled ridge and back down for 50 mile loop. Firelily shredded her new 773' tire! They mean soft terrane. Fall colors were beautiful. All these trails were in great condition. With some ruts still existing from last year. Of course an Enduro is going to be a challenge with the dust. I would say the trails are in very good condition. Many of the logging roads are being converted to single track by the forest service. They cut bush and trees nearby and stack it along side the bank creating a single track. Unfortunately riding in the same track continually creates silty dust. Many of the old mud holes have had trails cut around them, shortcuts have been fenced and land restorations is in progress.
$55? You love riding don't you? :thumb:
Bring a contractors mask!

Buddy and I just came back from two days (Sunday & Monday) of riding in Middle Creek & Penny Pine riding area.
We had a lot of fun!
The dust level was about the same of its in Stonyford.
But because we were just two of us, it didn't bother me so much.

We rode 106 miles for two days and covered the most trails in the area, I think. We saw pink ribbons hanging for Cowbell Enduro. I could tell many of the trails have been well maintained since last spring. However, some of them still have rutts and branches sticking out from both sides. Nothing dangerous, if you watch them.

The mountains are very beautiful right now. I believe anybody who is going to be there will enjoy riding the trails and the beautiful nature (A deer crossed the trail I was on) in Mendecino National Forest!!!

Fox,

I get on 280, take 19th Ave through SF. 101 North past Calpella. East on 20.

19 miles later left on Mendenhall ( there is a gas station / store on the right) which will turn into Elk Mountain road. Stay on Elk Mountain road about 7 miles. You should see the camping / staging area on the right. The entrance is right after a right hand turn, it sneaks up on you.

Whatever you do DO NOT follow the directions on the District 36 webpage to go over 175 to Clear Lake - BIG MISTAKE. Like Jonala said, 101 North, Hwy 20 East.

Brian, you are so right. One time when I lived up north, I went to Middle Creek and decided to go home via 175. Even in a pickup that route adds a lot of time. With a large rig it would be a nigthmare. Some of those internet map/route programs are bogus!

Posted by: ktmchick---------------------

So Buddy, Mini and Brian are we going to see you this weekend?

Posted by: Buddy---------------------

KTMChick:
I'm going just to sandbag Quick Mick. Somebody has to slow that guy down. Hey, Ask him to bring that tire mounting machine from the shop. Firelily needs some rubber !!!!

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Belinda, I will be there on Saturday.
But I don't know if I ride the race or not yet.
If not, I will be a cheerleader for all the DRNers!
Looking forward to seeing you again.

I won't be there - used up the last kitchen pass this weekend to go deer hunting. It was the last weekend of the season..... Got to spend some time with the wife.

Brian

Posted by: chasejj---------------------

I'll be there. #74b
Looking for Mr. Sleepy(aka RetSenior). Maybe we can all pitch in and get him an alarm clock.

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Good idea, Chase!
It's not going to be fun without George....

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Karna, did you make your mind?
Middle Creek is really a nice place. You should come out!!!

But that's my job

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

I'll be there. I'm on 66d. The alarm clock is not the problem, it's the operator of the alarm clock. I sure hope Mick is in front of me because I sure would hate to see that DRZ thing fly by me and ruin my day.

Brian do you know if Scott will be there with his street DRZ?

Posted by: AKCPlumb---------------------

Club is sending me route sheet tomorrow am so should be on D36 website by end of day

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

AKC,
You come through again.

Thanks.

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

RetSenior,
As far as I know Scott is not planning on doing any more enduros or HS this year.

Good luck to everyone,

Brian

Posted by: AKCPlumb---------------------

Have sent the route sheet to D36 webmaster should be posted shortly

Posted by: Fox Racing---------------------

!

Posted by: Jonala---------------------

Fox, more than likely, you, Mick and Mark will be on the first "C" row. I will be acting as trail sweep, somewhere around row 80 +

Route sheet is up on the D36 website. Thanks again AKC.

Unfortunately no, We didn't pre enter for this one so Mick and I will be somewhere in the back eating dust. Should be getting there early on Friday so hopefully we won't be the last row!

Thanks AKC for getting us the route sheet.

Posted by: velosapiens---------------------

hmm. i'm still undecided. the contract i was working on suddenly went away today, so i can easily make it, but that much dust again sounds icky. if i can get sean to go riding east of chico, i'll do that. otherwise, i guess i'll eat some dust. maybe i'll move myself up to b's to avoid the jam-ups.
