The final round should be very interesting with three guys in the hunt to win the championship. Who is planning to attend the race in Indiana??

i'll be there, it is always a great ride. they are supposed to have a new system for figuring the score at the end, in the past it has been well after dark and most people have given up and went home by the time the trophies are handed out.

I'm hoping for some new blood to take over the number one plate...

I'll be there, hope it doesn't rain, I hear its nasty when wet either way it should be fun.

My son and I will be there riding on minute 4. Could be a good minute if it's muddy, could suck if there's alot of virgin trail. Sounds like with the points race so tight it will be exciting.
The last section for the A and AA riders will really be interesting!!
Good luck,
Wayne

When I left the KTM camp was breaking open the champagne!!!!
What a series...to come down to the last race. The last section of trail for the A/AA was a true test...40 miles with a reset in the middle. Most of them were still late after the reset. Great race with plenty of spectator spots. We saw one rider 15 times during the day.

What happened to fred hoes. I heard he was dq'd?

Grats to my NJ homie Mike Lafferty!

Fred did not have a good day. He ran out of gas in the morning. In the afternoon, the A/AA had a check placement that was confusing. Fred missed the check and was DQ'd. Others missed the check, but not enough (according to the club) for the check to be thrown out. I do not think this check would have impacted the results from a national level, but it would have had an impact on the District 14 (MI) results.

Lafferty Clinches Fifth Title
The final round of the AMA National Enduro Series began with three riders taking a shot
at the championship. The start saw defending champion and season long points leader Mike
Lafferty (KTM), contender Fred Hoess (HUS) one point behind, and multi-time national
champion Randy Hawkins (YAM) nine points behind, with all seeking a win and the title.
The first five mile section saw the top riders scoring a one, with the second section of eleven miles
taking four points from Lafferty, five points from Hawkins and Robbie Jenks (YAM) with Hoess
scoring a six. The third section of fifteen miles found Lafferty carding a one with Hawkins and
Jenks following closely with a two going into the first gas stop.
A thirty one mile section after the first gas stop proved to be the toughest of the day on many
riders. Lafferty increased his lead to 3 points over Hawkins and Jenks by check 10.
At check 11 things had changed once again with Hawkins and Jenks both gaining a point on
Lafferty while Hoess ran out of fuel on the long section. Jenks also ran out of fuel before the second
gas stop and was forced to push his bike the last mile of trail.
With one section remaining Lafferty was ahead by two points over Hawkins with Jenks and Hoess
both several points behind after their fuel mileage woes. Hoess problems continued after he missed
the second to last check and was disqualified from the event.
Randy Hawkins gave it everything he had and scored a four in the last section, with Lafferty
scoring a five and clinching his fifth National Enduro Championship in the last six years.

The check in question was during the 40 mile "A/AA" section.
The club had used short sections of harvested bean and corn fields to tie together approximately 80 miles of very technical woods riding. It was not uncommon for riders to drop over 100 points during the "A/AA" only section (a total of three checks.)
The clud did an excellent job with arrowing the open fileds but with everybody running late it was tempting to scan the other side of the field looking for an arrow that led back into the woods and take a straight line approach instead of following the arrows around the edge of the field. (The club even warned to not cut across fields prior to the start.)
Everyone seemed to use this "straight line" approach to make up time. And eventually a well worn trail had developed. Only the apparant "braking lines" in the fresh plowing pointed the way back to the check in question and if you choose not to heed that "sign" you were SOL.
A good strategy used by the club I think. Remeber this was a National Enduro.

The check in question was shortly after the gas available. 20% of the riders missed it. The club placed an in-check in a location that was in an open field. You made a right hand sweeper around a sludge pond with a gravity box wagon located just after the pond on the right. The club was behind the wagon so they could catch people hot. When you got closer to the wagon the club wanted you to make a hard right and go into the check, then hang a hard left back into the field. Unfortuntely there were no ribbons or banners sending you in that direction. If you were late and blasting the field the checkers would have blended in with the gravity box as you went by, which was only about 20 yards away.
Fred Hoess was late and he did the same thing. Randy Hawkins was on time and missed it, yet turned around and went back when he saw it out of the corner of his eye.
Good idea to catch people hot. Bad idea to hide it and not understand why people missed it.
