Elkin's Flat staging area

Anyone been up to Elkins Flat lately? My daughter and family just got home from there and said huge rocks have been put in all gaps to access most camping we used last year. What gives? :flame: That and a large crowd of jeepers partying 'till oh5thirty made them decide to go back down the hill to PiPi camp ground and share a 50 site with one other trailer. I'll call the rangers this week and check it out

Dave,
I haven't been up there since the dust got real bad in about July. Please post what you find. It's going to rain this week!

Posted by: sigar---------------------

Hey Dave,

What did you find? I know get off my lazy butt and call the Ranger myself. It's gonna get lots of rain (hopefully not snow) the next couple of days. Gonna be a slippery mess! Woo hoo! Hopefully, I'm gonna be heading up Saturday afternoon and riding Sunday.

I made it up there last month or so. The bolders were there then also. I did talk to a ranger down at the Pi Pi camp while on the scouting mission up there and she didn't have any idea that they were even there much less know why they were placed there.

As a side note, the Elkin area is definately worth the drive from Sacramento. Although it was really dusty there were some sections that we just totally awe inspiring.. well after I got done going through some crazy whoops. I did see this freakishly blue squirrel. Course I came across some chewed up ground from logging, and the people with what I hope were paint ball guns really worried me. In all thoughit was still a really nice place and I'll definately be up there again. Next time I go though I'll have to figure out some sort of jetting problem because the bike complained a lot.

Finally made the call to the Placer ranger district office and after several busy signals and a message machine, I got to talk to a real person. She said that the boulders were placed there to block vehicle entry because the area was 'suffering ' from over use and needed time to recover. :silly: I asked if it was just a temporary measure and she said "oh yes but maybe there for a couple of years to allow time for recovery". I said "this basically turns the place into a day use area for most late arrivals" and she said that she wasn't all that familiar with the area but yes that the basic result. Maybe some one closer to the Placerville district office could go in and talk to someone who might be more 'familiar' with Elkins Flat and get the real poop.

Thinking about riding there this Sunday, should be nice and damp. Anyone interested in a EF-Pipi loop?

Posted by: Karna&Justin---------------------

Les,

Why don't you come and ride in the WFO? THe conditions might actually be close to perfect at Stonyford! I think a bunch us us will he headed that way.
Maybe we will see you there?

Karna

Thanks for invite Karna, but the way I score points at enduros I could just as well spend money on new tire and do some free riding. Plan on going to Stonyford in couple a weeks for Bearfoot. Have fun up there.

Posted by: sigar---------------------

Hey Fremontguy,
A buddy of mine and I might be making it up there Sunday. What time do you plan on staging?

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

Sigar, can be at E.F. Sun. 9am. I'll park on left side staging area, between boulders? Green Chevy pu w/ Ktm.

Posted by: sigar---------------------

Fremontguy,
My buddy and I are planning on leaving Lodi by about 7:00AM, so the timing should be right on. We'll be in either a pewter or silver Chevy pu w/ a black CR250 and a KX250.

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

Great, see you folks Sunday. Correction on vehicle I'm driving. My green 4x4 is in shop so they gave me a low rider style, black Silverado rental. Dirty Dave, come on up.

Posted by: sigar---------------------

Hey Fremontguy,
Did you make it up? It was definately wet, but tons of fun. The ground conditions were awesome, a real challenge. The rain was a pain with goggles. We ended up wet, cold and lost, but it all worked out. Sorry we missed you.

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

Sigar, parked my truck near entrance to staging area-8:30. Walked around area looking for you guys, then took 300e on loop around 25 over to PiPi at 9:30. For the most part conditions were awesome. Logged out areas were mud bogs, shiney river ruts on hills were slippery. Dark black dirt with pine needles was the magic combo for roosting.
