Inexpensive/dependable enduro?

My dad is looking to buy an inexpensive enduro bike for around town and some local trail riding. Anyone have recommendations? He wants something dependable but doesn't wanna spend big $$$$.
I have noticed the Yamaha XT350's and XT600's. Those seem like they would make an OK all around beater. Were there any problems with them? There is an 88 XT350 for sale near him. What would one of those be worth in good shape? I found an 86 XT600 for sale near me? That guy wants something like $1800. It is in good shape but not great and has about 7000 miles. Is that alot of mileage for an enduro ridden mostly on the street?
I also have noticed DR350's and DR600's around too. Are those good bikes. thanks
