RC nitro truck story

Hey guys, this is kinda funny because I should know alot about two strokes with being in the dirt bike scene for over 13 years now, but I decided to get into another hobby that looked interesting, Gas RC cars. I bought the new Losi XXXNT sport. They "broke" it in for me, so I figured I could go at it right when I got home, but in RC language "breaking in" means just letting it sit on a desk and run through a tank at idle. I get it home and 2 minutes later the thing is seized up. 400.00 down the tube in 2 minutes. So I took it back and did it right this time. But I felt like such an idiot asking about how to jet the thing and all. come to find out you are supposed to turn the jetting screws in one hour increments, so a full turn is 12 hours. I guess I shouldn't have leaned it out a half turn like I do my dirt bike....another lesson learned.

Whoot! Another R/C guy is in the house. I have a T-Maxx. My son got me into this mess with R/C and we have a blast with it. These dudes are a ball at the track too. Can get some wicked air and it doesn't hurt near as much when you case it. hehe.

On breaking in, on my T-Maxx I ran 2 tanks at idle, and 3 tanks just taking it easy and haven't had a problem yet (been through about 2 gal.). So how do you like that Losi so far?

I got a question for you guys, and it may be a stupid one. Why does it seem like everyone I know that has these things has about a half dozen different bodies laying around and always runs the thing without any of them on it? Is there a reason, like esier access to something?

I don't like RC cars!! My riding buddy sold two RM's to get into them

I love them I have a E-Maxx and a RC10 both are electric, but I do put the car bodies back on even though it's a pain to change out the batteries every 10 mins. I have broken the E-Maxx a couple times jumping (5 feet to the flat), it's an expensive habit. Jumping is really cool as engine braking and acceration (just as in MX) come into play in the air. They can really take some abuse and my doby gets her excercise chasing them. :thumb:

They didn't break it in correct at all. If you let it sit on a desk and idle...it will over heat (no matter how rich you have it set). Those engines are air cooled..and no air flowing through the head, means no cooling.

I've got several R/C's, 2 Nitro Rustlers (one street, one off road), a Nitro 4-Tec, and an E-Maxx.

Yeah that's what I figured. I love the truck so far, I mean I have some questions but can't find a decent BB on the net. That truck hauls butt and I have already experimented with jumping it and you guys are right, these things get some major air. I think I need to lean up something, I'd like a little quicker response off the start, so this means I lean the slow speed right? Also sometimes it stalls after being run for a while, but not very often, when it does it's after I've hit alot of jumps. Should I let it cool between tanks? THanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it.

to clarify, when I hit the gas the thing spits out a raw fuel drops with the exhaust, I think this was just the setting for breaking it in and that I should change it after break in.

After the motor warms up..you can lean the high speed a little bit...then the low speed a tiny bit. The low speed has a huge effect on the overal engine temp (the fuel is the main source of cooling when it's idleing). If it spits out raw fuel when you give it gas..then you should lean the low speed out a little. You can expect to make a few adjustments each time you run in differnt conditions (temp, elevation, etc). Most of the time, once you get the low speed set, you can pretty much leave that one alone.

I've got an nitro RC10-GT. Things a blast when I can get it running right. It gets annoying adjusting the scews, so I usually just set it once then forget about it. I usually run it around a park, so when it breaks (stupid tree) I just pull out my R/C electric foam airplane and fly it around... until the tree snakes it or the ground slaps it out of the sky.

Thanks for the help guys.

I used to have a 1/8 scale street car with an .021 man that thing was fast. What sucked about it was the radio gear I had for it didn`t like the vibration from the engine and would sometimes cut out at full throttle and go until it hit something. One time this happened I had to damage it even more digging it out from under a small car. It was fun but it got way to exspensive fixing it all the time.

I have an electric Traxxas Bandit, electric Associated RC10B3 (racing buggy tricked out REAL nice ) and a Traxxas T-Maxx. You're right about jumping the Maxx...I was jumping it on some 80 degree 3-foot-tall snowbanks no problem. It'd get about 11 ft. of air! The jumps were near vertical, too, so I didn't need a whole lot of room. I also ran it on an MX track (at the amateur stadium-style track at Red Bud). It was clearing doubles and tabletops!! I got myself a nice audience with it, too!

Some people run them with the bodies off to keep the engines from overheating. I cut a hole in the windshield on the engine side, and a couple on the side windows. That keeps the air flowing. The only disadvantage is that stones and dirt can get in really easily.

Traxxas just came out with a new T-Maxx. It's got a 2.5cc engine (instead of the .15 that it used to have) and it's got a wider stance, so it doesn't roll as easily. That would be a KILLER ride!!

i'm going to take it to the track this weekend and see if someone there can help me get it dialed in perfectly. I'm really loving this sport right now...(not as much as dirt bikes though...I swear..really).

I didn't know so many people here had them. I have a Traxxas Emaxx, Stampede, and 4-tec. I am planning on getting a Tmaxx. There so cool but they can be very very expensive. With the money I spent on these I could of got a used bike.

Yep, you hit the nail on the head. Especially on gas cars, you're constantly adjusting the motor. It's a real pain to keep removing the body. I had one body that was cut open enough to reach through, but then there's always some other reason that it's blocking you. ie. receiver battery changes, re-fueling, clutch adjustments.

IMO the gas cars are more work than they're worth. I got out of it a few years back. Oh yeah, and I still have 3 bodies laying around.

For what it's worth, if anyone is interested in some "vintage" electric buggies let me know. I have an orginal RC10 (not modified), and a Tamiya Super Champ. The Champ is about 90% complete and has NEVER been run since being rebuilt. The gears in the diff are brand new with no grease on them. The ABS plastic body is in pristine condition w/ the orginal stickers that came with the kit. I'd be willing to let these cars go as they're just sitting in a closet collecting dust.
