Tornados!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Last night was pretty wild here in Dixie. The toll for Alabama was quite high: Ten fatalities, more than 50 injuries, and millions in property damage. I had minimal damge. . .just a couple of tree limbs and some wayward patio furniture.

How did the rest of you guys fare?

The worst outbreak of tornados I've ever seen! 16 people lost their lives here in Tennessee, 10 in Alabama and 5 in Ohio. I live up on a hill and can see the sky at least 1 county away in 3 different directions and the lightning 'cells' were everywhere. Scary! I left my house 2 different times to go down to my parents where there is a basement. My prayers go out to those who lost loved ones. :whiner:

Just want to say I hope everyone living in or near the paths of the tornadic activity through the country Sunday night is safe and sound. I've seen some footage and the destruction is horrific.

Seems like the worts damage was northwest of the Birmingham and south of Culman. We had one storm cell go by 7 miles north of our house and the last cell (most severe) went about 10 miles south of us. Fortunately for us, we never had to head down to the basement.

I hope everyone is OK. JP, I watched closely when they tracked that one through Cahaba heights!

Glad to hear everyone is OK.

Our farm was in the middle of a tornado back in 1968 and that's a day that I will never forget.

Took us 1 month to clean up two destroyed barns.

I hope my original thread title didn't offend anyone. Please accept my apology if it did.

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

I don't think that was the case, JP. There were three (I think) threads started at about the same time on this topic. Yours, mine and Reesknight's all kinda got combined into one to cover the topic.

Just saw on CNN that the death toll is at 36. Terribly tragic. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones.

Now, don't anyone take this the wrong way, but have you ever noticed how when people die in the US by ways other than homocide, it's breaking news? I've been thinking about this for a long time. Again, I'm not trying to minimize the pain that the families of the dead must endure, but over 32,000 children die every DAY around the world, mostly due to starvation. Where is the sorrow for these kids? This sounded so much better in my head...

I know I must sound cruel or insensitive, but believe me, I'm not. All I'm saying is that when 2000 people are killed by a monsoon or flood or earthquake in some Third World country, it's maybe mentioned in passing on the nightly news. But any time a single American (or Canadian up here) is killed by some accident or Act of God, it's a breaking news story. I'm not trying to be accusing or judgemental, but thousands of innocent people around the world die everyday. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say?

Again, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that the lives lost in the tornadoes are inconsequential (because they are NOT), but I think as a whole, we 'first-world' individuals need to think on a more global scale when it comes to life in general.

Feel free to let me have it if you disagree...

Respectfully,
Dave

I understand what your saying, canucklehead, but ask yourself this: Is it more 'newsworthy' to you if it happens in a different town, or in your own house?

Posted by: canucklehead---------------------

Point taken.
I agree, the degree of separation matters a great deal. Although, the fact still remains - an innocent life is still an innocent life, whether they're American/Canadian or not.
