Just finished the write up.... more photos to come. This was a fun review but a lot of work and I feel like I left out soo much! So, got questions ask them!
Read it HERE

Thump those pipes cost alot of money for what looks to be little in the way of more power over stock. It looks like for all that money you get alot more noise. I was looking at getting an exhaust system but I dont know now. Thanks for all the information

That is exactly the reason for the review... I don't want you to think a pipe is going to put your bike on steroids because it did not. The point is to get the information out there for you to learn from and discuss it because it is a lot of $$ down the drain if you are un satisfied with the end result.
The dyno tests are just numbers so please don't put a whole lot of weight in that... read what I said about my track impressions were about each pipe. Most lessend the low end bog. Some gave it more bottom, some more mid and some on top... and a couple made it rev quite a bit faster as shown on the dyno ET.
The OEM is a REALLY good pipe. If you damage your stocker it will cost you about $700 to replace it though and an aftermarket will be around $450.
I guess the real queston is would I spend the money on a pipe? Well after having my 99' 400 worked over by Rich and getting used to the kind of power it had when I went to the 02'426 I was disappointed because the lack of lowend... So for me yes I would spend the money because I did not want to jsack with the motor to get the results. The pipe that worked best for me was the PC, it gave the best lowend and it revved FAST. We are currently testing the Bills oversized pipe on a YZ444 as it has a motor that can probably benefit from it even more.

It looks like all of them make a narrower power curve, and most are actually heavier than the stock system.. Kinda goes against what they advertise, eh?

Yup, the OEM had the most broad powerband. But again, on the bike felt different than the dyno showed. Guess it depends on what RPM range you want to ride in. To be honest with you, I can't feel a "power band" on the 426 like I can on 2-strokes, I do notice the throttle response differences in different RPM ranges and how quickly the bike revvs.
The Bills pipe was almost a pound lighter than OEM, CRD was a pound heavier. The PC and BG were with in a few ounces, that could be packing... the OEM was weighed after it had been used for about a month, the others were weighed right out of the package... bottom line is you aint gonna get a whole lot lighter than OEM, I don't know how Bills did it...

Great article, David.
Everything that I have read so far has indicated that pipes do exactly that with the 426-move the power around in the rpm range. If you can live with the noise/weight difference (whether it is more or less), then you can choose a pipe to make the power where you want it.
A couple of exceptions to the rule-again, just from what I have read, but consider to be reputable sources-the Thunder Alley for a fair increase in HP and a broader power band, but louder, and the FMF "Q" for a slight decrease in peak hp but with the benefit of a USFS-approved spark arrestor and a greatly reduced sound level.
For me, I'm still running stock. For sound or public riding issues, I think it's gonna be a "Q" slip-on for me. For now, and the foreseeable future, the stocker makes more power than I can use, with the exception of straightaways!

Until you throw a different design into the mix, pipe tests are all going to look like this. The straight pipe design is so basic that a substantial increase in power anywhere is unlikely.
It would be interesting to throw in a Yosh reverse meg. Or the Thunder Alley reverse megaphone pipe into the test. Im betting at that point, the straight pipe design is going to have giant gaps in performance in comparison.

The good thing about the internet is the ink never dries, we can add any pipe to the review at any time... the problem is convincing companies that our reviews are worth sending their products to us to have them included. Some think we are just another web site that will be gone tomorrow.
Rich tested the TA on a CRF adn loves it. Yosh claimed they were sending one but never came through...

Excellent write up David.

Are you going to add more pipes to your test?

If other MFGs want their pipes tested, yes. We can do that.

I got my pipe tested by the Stoneyford USFS this weekend.
96~97db, and that means it won't pass the new Jan '03 California off road requirements for sound levels.
The rangers say that the FMF Q pipe also creates this borderline db output.
The inner corner of the silencer also rubs the tire.
On as good note the pipe has a very linear delivery which makes it an excellent off road option, and the head pipe tucks in very close and doesn't melt my riding pants sans shield.

It was brought to my attention that I have the absolute Power pipe, which is actually rated for 98db so my test worked out better than the advertised sound #'s.
The absolute performance pipe is rated for 91db and appears to be my next choice...

The new Muzzy systems might fall under the sleek category.
