Anyone ever raced the Baja 1000? Whats the desert out there like? My dad, me, and a friend that owns the local Honda shop are going to enter into next year and apply for Honda support. Should be a blast, but none of us have raced Desert before...what should we prepare for?

The '03 Baja 1000 will be cool since it is not going to LaPaz.
I have nothing against LaPaz, but supporting a team the full length of Baja is a tactical nightmare.
Are you going to run a XR650?
How many riders?
You will need approx 3-4 chase vehicles. You will need 2 on the eastern side (Highway 3) and at least 1 on the western side (Highway 1). If you can, definatly get some race radios. CB's do not cut it.
Have you ever been through a Federalie check point?
Do you know any spanish?

Riding a Honda will be a plus as the factory runs support and if you need help its there.
Nothing could have prepared me for the speeds in Baja.
Try to pre run at least a section to get a feel.
How do you say ten miles of huge whoops created by super trucks?
You gotta see it!

You definitely want to ride an XR650. That bike was built for baja, you can run the honda pits (for a fee of $1250 or so), where they fuel, change tires, filters, etc..., and they have many more parts for 650's if necessary. The CRF would have to be heavily modified to survive baja. Do some searching over on thumpertalk in the 650 forum as there's been some interesting discussion recently from many who just ran the 1000. Those guys are studs, and a little nuts. There's also a picture of the CRF that Tim Morton's team raced (in the CRF forum) and it's a beauty.
