I just (tonight) picked up an older XR 200 (about 1985 model). Got it for a song. It seems to run really strong. The motor, however, has a ticking sound (sounds like a lifter on a car). I know the guy who owned and says he has been riding it for three years like that. Can anyone give me any clues as to what it might be and how to get rid of it. It will drive me crazy.

can you say valve adjustment?

Where can I go to get information on doing this adjustment myself? Is it very hard? Or should I just have it done?

Has that bike got twin carbs? If so, it is a four valve RFVC RE or RF model, which are not noted for their reliability. You may have to inspect all top end components (RFVC rockers, cam, valves etc) and timing chain for wear and/or damage if a simple valve adjustment does not fix the problem.

The two valve motor on the other hand (single carb) is an anvil. Again, inspect the followers, cam and timing chain but these are much simpler engines and a dream to work on.

Buy a workshop manual and you can't go wrong.

Cam chains are a source of noise on these guys too.
Often the spring loaded adjuster won't take up the the slack on an older motor, but you can pop the stator cover off and push the adjuster over with a screwdriver and cinch the adjuster bolt back down.

Hey,
XR's and thumpers in general tend to be more noisy due to the valve train and cam chain. Definitely check the valves for proper play and make sure the cam chain isn't too loose/stretched. If you keep the valve train running smoothly, that little 200 will run for a long time.
I think '84-'85 model XR200's did have 4 valve RFVC heads and dually carbs. Honda went back to the 2-valve/single carb version thereafter and run the same engine to this day.

Valve adjustment made and still makes noise. Got a manual and will be trying to pull the head cover for inspection and/or cam, chain & sprocket, tension replacement. Wish me luck!!!!!!

Good luck - if you're not able to find anything or a new camchain doesn't solve the noise there's a decent chance you might be hearing piston slap. I'm betting on a worn out camchain though.

I think its the camchain. I'd try adjusting it like SFO said and if that doesn't work then dig into the motor. Good luck with it though.

I've heard a few xr200's run and they all seem to make that noise. I remember the old atv200 3 wheelers sounded like that too. I am working on one for a friend right now and it makes the same noise. I checked and changed the oil thinking that was the problem and it still sounds the same. I called my neighbor over because he has the same bike just a little older and he said his always sounded like that. I don't know, maybe just a characteristic sound of that particular model.

I'll through in my vote for a cam chain too... have had a bad adjuster cause my friends bike to lock up... sounded exactly as you described, like noisy lifters. Check it out.
