After riding trails all day my friends XR just died when he tried to restart it the kickstart would not move. The motor had locked down .No strange sounds or any indication of problems before this happened. Oil level was good, air filter was cleaned before we started rideing that mourning. What I need to know is if this bike is worth rebuilding or not. I am a two stroke man myself and I have no clue what could have happened or what it would cost to repair.

I would say your buddy should tear the motor down to find out exaclty what is wrong, then figure out how much it'll cost to fix. Then he can decide if the bike is worth that much. Maybe the cam chain skipped time and the piston is coming up agains the valves? Maybe its as simple as a problem with the kickstarter itself?

I broke a gear in my xr200 tranny once. When that chink of gear floated around it would get wedged into the tranny. Try rolling it back and forth in a high gear to free it up.

oops. wrong thread

My 83 xr did the same thing, it was caused by missing teeth on the kickstarter gears. I split the case, bought some new gears and had it back together in about 2 weeks. He'll be out a gasket kit and the gears if that is what it is. But he should pull it apart to find out what is wrong.

I have an XR 250 (87) i just rebuilt the top end. same thing had happed to it. I got it bored, new piston and rings (nothing to wrong with them but I decided to do it while i was there). What ended up being the problem was the timing chain was worn out. It looked fine but was streched beyond what the tensioner could keep tight. This allowed the cam to jump time.
If everything looks fine that is what it probably is. You can check it with out much teardown. Drain the oil and take the (shift lever) side cover off. If the chain flops (even alittle bit) the chain is shot. You can replace the chain without tearing the whole jug down.

Yup, I'd second the notion of the chain being loose. My buddies XR200 did the same thing, loose timing chain locked things up. I think it was about $350 to get all the work done at the local shop. But if you had a piston slam into a valve, it could be lots more. Very likely being that yours is quite old, his was only a 96 and that chain was SHOT!
