CRF Tranny Oil

Is anyone using a synthetic oil in their tranny? I have heard two different stories and don't want to screw something up. I am using mobil 1 in the engine and a valvoline non-synthetic in the tranny, but was wondering if a synthetic in the tranny would help with smoother shifting?

Synthetic causes the clutch to slip too much, I would say you are good with what you are using :thumb:

Stay away from synthetic in the tranny.

I use synthetic Mobil 1 (MX4T) in the trans of my CRF without issues. Thousands of other racers the world over are using a variety of synthetics without issue as well.

People who tell you that synthetics will make the clutch slip are just showing their complete lack of understanding of the subject matter, but that's nothing new.

Rich you have got to your bike out of 1st gear for a change to feel the clutch slip

Anyways, sorry. I just have a good friend who races his 450 and when I was about to get mine he advised against it because he felt slippage so that's just the info I passed on. :thumb:

The MX4T full synthetic is made specifically for four stroke motorcycles (most of which still share motor and tranny oil), so I doubt there'll be any slippage. I just picked some up for a 426, but the $7.99 price tag kind of shocked me. Whew! :scream:

Would those evil friction modifiers be the cause ?

Thank you all for the input so far. All of your inputs are exactly what I have been hearing from all of my buddies. I guess I will try the synthetic in the tranny for a one day ride and see how it feels. If I like it, I can sitck with it. If not, then it is only one day and I can change it out for the next ride. That $7.99 price tag is a scary thing, for that reason alone I might stick with the Valvoline at a price of $2.49.

What you'll find is some oils will allow the trans to shift better and improve the clutch feel. The problem is you can't always be sure if that will be a synthetic or mineral based oil. As long as you use good quality oil and change it regularly I don't personally beleive there is any real advantage in terms of trans longevity between the good stuff. It's more a matter of rider preference/shift feel in the end. The oil I liked best in the CRF trans was a non-synthetic ATF type racing trans fluid, but at $15/liter it didn't provide enough of a difference to justify the additional cost when changing it after every ride.

Rich, is changing the high dollar oil out nescessary, or is it just your personal prefrence? I usually run Mobil 1 15w-50, chang it every 3 rides. Never had a bottom end problem, and will continue to use it. IMO Mobil 1 makes the best lineup of oils I have ever seen.

It's pretty difficult to guage "necessary" when it comes gearbox oil. But the CRF does have a very small capacity and it doesn't take much clutch debris to compromise the oil. So I guess it is a personal preference based on my complete loathing of doing gearbox rebuilds.

Good Point! Spend more now, spend much less later.

Just to clarify, when changing the tranny oil is it only necessary to refill it with 590cc, NOT the 670cc that the manual states? I read somewhere that the 670cc is only needed when the bike is reassembled, ie: not oil/dry transmission.
Thx!
