beginner mx

Alright, I wanna start mx'n, but I'm not real sure, I see all these pics of huge jumps and I'm thinkin ehhhh maybe not. I ride mostly woods & I dont get the chance to practice jumping(MX tracks are like 2-3hrs away, never been to one). It looks really fun & I would just do it every once in a while when Im not racing HS/GNCC's. Anyway the question is, would a kdx be suitable for a begining class(I dont care about winning I just want to check out other forms of the sport) and how big are the jumps in such a class (the course does change from say A class to D class right?)?

u could race a kdx, i don't condone it,but i've seen it done before....the beginners run the same track as the experts, so jumps will probably be the biggest u have ever went off of....but first timers should just be out there cruising, which means u shouldn't be attempting a 40 ft. double, or even a 10 ft double....if u plan on trying a race,..just take it easy in the beginner class and u should be ok....don't get me wrong, every time u leave the starting gate, u are taking a risk....but if u use caution your first time, and experience a day at the track, i guarantee u will sell the kdx and buy a racer....the more u race ,the more comfortable u will get....everybody that races was once like u!!!! stay safe have fun....peace

I dont think I'll ever sell the kdx, though I might buy a crf450 or maybe a yz250 (if I ever hit the lottery! LOL)

limitless, see the thread in the KDX forum. A lot of people have done it. as for jumps, it depends on your local track. But they certainly don't change tracks between classes, sorry. ("OK, 250 Beginners head to the gates while we bulldoze the big jumps..")

I had a buddy that raced at KDX when I first started racing and he actually was pretty competitive on it. He later bought a KTM 520 but I think he rode the KDX better.
1st time out just take it easy. Let everyone else take off in front of you if you don't care about winning. Everytime I go out my daughter & I both look at each other and say "Just ride your ride." I think it's the best way to look at it.

some tracks run an enduro/cross country bike class.

Dependeing on your comfort level, you will probably want to get a few practice days in at a track before you race it. The adrenaline level during an MX race can be kind of high, and you don't want to (literally) jump into anything before you are prepared! No sense hurting yourself just to have fun. I race beginner 250 here, but I practice ride both tracks quite often so I know them very well. That bit of comfort is a nice edge once the gate drops. :thumb:

D36-108A - I meant like the beginners might be blocked off from certain jumps or somthin not actually bulldoze a different track that would be dumb
Thanks for all the advice I'm gonna do some practicing on muh jumpin skillz before I actually race. I think there is a moto track like 15min away (or so I've heard) all i need now is a decent day(ohh yeah and I need to find the track
)!

limetless,
You need to come down to Charlestown and ride with me at Podium One.
We can do a practice session or two, then you will be ready to race.
The new track owners are planning on 30+ race dates this coming season and practice every week. I saw a couple of lighted bikes racing last year. Neither were doing triples.

My opinion on the KDX is that it's hard enough to MX with speed and good form even on a bike designed for it. I'd plan on a lighter bike if I planned on MXing alot. That said...I have an MX bike that I suffer with in the woods, but since my venue of choice is the track, I haven't bought a nice woods machine.

Sounds good jaybird, when it gets warm I may take you up on that offer. I ride mostly woods so buying a pure bred mxer isn't practical for me
(ohh to be rich) Maybe someday I will have a spare 3-4G's for a good used YZ\CR...... Hmm I may be out of place in the 30+ class as I'm only 19.

Hey you guys forgot something thats important if your gonna do your first race don't worry about the jumps BUT do yourself a big favor and stay to far outside line on the jumps like the doubles you would hate to get landed on!! If faster guys are coming move over and HOLD YOUR LINE!! Just keep these general rules in mind and go out and have fun! thats the biggest thing of all is to have fun! who cares about what place you get and don't do anything stupid and ride over your head like alot of guys end up doing in a race and hurt yourself. I would suggest doing a practice first or if you do go to a race try and pick one that isn't a series the competetion gets alittle more fierce on those days.

i agree with the above post. go to a practice session or two and get familiar with riding with faster riders. doesnt matter how fast you go as long as you hold your line. the fast guys will get around you. dont try to move out of their way. its best to take the slower lines. dirtweek attendees saw a pretty quick kdx rider in the A class last year. jeff fredette can fly on the ground. he pretty much rolled every jump and smoked some flyboys on mx equipment. go out, be safe, and have fun.

LOL....you do have a point there, Jay!
limitless, I was reffering to the owner having over 30 racing event days planned. All race days include classes for every skill level and age.
First year AMA cardholders can race D class.

ohhh LOL, my bad.
I'm gonna try to get down there for a 3 day weekend sometime. It's about a 3 hr drive for me.....
Does anyone know about the indoor MX track in Martinsville? Well I know it was supposed to be indoors but they might have scrapped that idea, either way I know I remember hearing something about damage to the MX track in Martinsville on the news when all those tornados hit, so I was wandering if anyone knew where it was? I can't find anything on the net about it....
Posted by: Jaybird---------------------
I think that is the one that went belly up before opening.
Posted by: limitless---------------------
Right on, I saw that somewhere, but I also saw somethin on the news after all that went down....hmmm maybe I'll take a drive & see if I can find it
