To match or not to match

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Dapper---------------------

So, if I buy a chest protector that does'nt match my jersey and pants will I be in violation with the fashion police?
I really like the Fox Airframe but all my other stuff is Moose. I don't want to make a fashion blunder.

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

Of course not, you would match better than most people. Most people aren't pro and don't have perfectly matching gear. I probably see more mismatched gear than matching. Of course there are people like me who think they look silly wearing mismatched gear, but then again, you are still riding around in bright colored tights anyway you look at it.

Posted by: limitless---------------------

LOL, matching gear?? All my gear matches after a few laps

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

I mix mine up too.

Posted by: Patman---------------------

You have never ridden with Green Horn the rider with a thousand colors and brands.

Posted by: jharmon---------------------

I wear a chest protector, long t-shirt, jean shorts with Alpine Boots. If that isn't a match I don't know what is.

Posted by: mx547---------------------

i always wear a thor chest protector no matter what my clothing is.

Posted by: Tony Eeds---------------------

I never match ... Between MX and golf gear it is the only chance I get to pimp. I must say the shock value is greater on the golf course. :scream:

Posted by: jaliveto---------------------

i ride with a guy that has a matching helmit, chest protector, boots, jersey, pants, gloves. And they all match his graphic package. We call him "THE PIMP"

Posted by: dirty~d~---------------------

Something wrong with matching gear? Actually, my jersey is one shade of yellow and my pants are another shade... so I guess I don't match. Dagnabbit! I wanted to be a poser!!!!

Posted by: Rich Rohrich---------------------

Once my gear is covered with blood it all pretty much looks the same, so I guess I kinda match.

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

I always try to chose a stylish tee-shirt to go with my shorts. I try not to pick a shirt that has a color scheme that may tend to clash with my braces. But sometimes, when I get that spunky feeling, I will throw caution to the wind and wear whatever I happen to grab.

Ever see a clean guy at the track....all gear new and matching, boots new and without a scratch, helmet shiney clean...he's got "wad up" written all over him, try to steer clear. LOL....

Posted by: nephron---------------------

Rich, the only problem with your theory is that if you're bleeding more briskly at various parts of the body, the shade of red is different depending on state of blood oxygenation, source (arterial or venous) and degree of clotting. Carotid lacerations leave a nice pinkish/bright red appearance, while slow peripheral venous bleeds are a bit more purplish, solid and tend to layer and cake differently. So technically, you don't REALLY match in any one point in time.

BTW, I could have sworn one of the riders in either Dirtrider or Dirtbike---I believe the guy on the KX125?--was wearing thor pants and another brand of shirt, or something like that. One thing is sure: it couldn't have been MXA. :thumb:

I stand corrected, and scabby :scream:

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

In answer to the serious part of your question, in MY opinion jersey, pants and gloves should match; peripherals like helmet, boots and chest protector don't need to. I confess to owning more than 5 sets of gear . . .

Don't you get some funny looks like at restaurants or the mall?

Karl and I have matching gear - matching bikes too, ain't we cute?!!!

Posted by: MXP1MP---------------------

MY gear isn't the same brand but the general color scheme matches navy blue/black/white/grey. My fox pilot helmet is mainly blue/white/grey got the fox navy air frame. Blue baggy shift pants with grey and some yellow! They are soon to be replaced by the new no fear shorts pants in a grey scheme. My white/black tech 8's, I have 3 jerseys either blue/black/grey/orange main colors. thor Gloves black/grey soon fox navy/black/orange. My warp stars are yellow with a yellow lense and I got a bright orange fox sticker on my helmet. Now if I really want to look like a goon I can dig out my really old gear and wear my ugly green/black/grey swirled thor helmet. My old hallman chest protector that has that vented plastic pieces (I got it back in 84!!) and its old yamaha yellow/back. These cooper mx pants (yes the hockey gear maker) that are like suzuki yellow and blue (I got these in 85!) and my honda red gaerne boots (from 82!) my blue JT googles and the flannel of my choice!

Posted by: VintageDirt---------------------

I do believe that all y'all know where I stand on this issue. Or, does it need repeating?

Neph-Rich didn't say it was his blood!

DOOOOHHHHH

Posted by: Hucker---------------------

I wear a yellow helmet with some red/black stripes, a sleeveless dirty FOX shirt and a pair of Seth Enslow Shift pants. Oh yeah, black THOR boots/yellow gloves.

Most people I see wear tuckin pants, macthing jersey's etc, I think they look kinda funny...(not that I look normal )

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

My gear matches, except for my goggles which are black/yellow. Oh well, no one's perfect...

it wasn't too bad until i tried to wear it to my wedding.

Posted by: Rich Rohrich---------------------

I like to think Gomer and I set a high standard that the young up and coming posers can aspire to If a sweatshirt was cool enough for Steve McQueen in On Any Sunday, then it sure as hell is "cool" enough for me :thumb:

Posted by: biglou---------------------

You see, it's like this: "It is better to look good, than to feel good. And I look marvelous." Actually, having matching gear and a great looking bike is about the best thing I got going for me as far as this riding thing goes. I sure as hell ain't fast enough to dress all mismatched!

Posted by: Tony Eeds---------------------

The standards that you and Gomer set and adhere to are something for all of us to aspire to.

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

I think Goober likes wearing matching Troy Lee gear now.

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

Rich and Gomer, pretty boys sitting on the track . . . do you need to come to Washington to learn to ride? Us gals will take you trail riding and you will see some REAL dirt. You might even get some on you.

<ducking and running>

Posted by: Rich Rohrich---------------------

FC - What you see in the background is a freshly groomed track with prime Midwestern dirt that is tackier than formal wear purchased from WalMart. BUT, don't let clean bikes and the wide open spaces fool you. I still managed to find a couple of trees to run into that day, and Gomer took enough soil samples with his head to require the filing of an environmental impact study with the local EPA.

I hit enough trees just riding at the MX track, I'm not sure I could survive a whole ride littered with them. :scream:

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

Rich,
Just come on out to Reno - not too many trees to fixate on. But the ones that are there are darn painful.....

Brian

Posted by: Chief---------------------

Hey Dapper!!!

This is just one of those things you gotta figure out yourself. Whatever you feel best in.

I have a yellow bike (after I wash it), not wanting yellow gear, I went with blue pants/jersey/gloves. The helmet, boots, chest protector are black so they go with anything. Now I bought a thor jersey that is white and more of a ktm orange which throws things off nicely. All this stuff gets permanently dirty (and usually stinks) so It doesn't seem to matter that much in the end.

I wouldn't want my gear to match the bike. BTW the fox 360 pants have lasted me quite well. I think $ spent on pants & boots goes a long way. The entry level thor boots dissapointed me.

Happy Holidays,

Chief

Posted by: XR3J---------------------

I don't exactly match with brands of gear, but I do try to keep the color scheme somewhat the same. (Red, white, black, grey)

Posted by: Dapper---------------------

I was just kidding on this post but with all response maybe I had better take my dirt apparel more serious

Posted by: bluerider125---------------------

me:

blue/black/silver Vega helmet
blue scott goggles (the cheepy ones, 27.97 at the dealer)
jerseys: 1)orange/white "XMX" walmart jersey
2)kawasaki green/black/white "XMX" walmart jersey
chest protector-black Thor aftershock
pants: 1) holy jeans
2)Fox 180 black/white pants
boots-black O'Neal elements
gloves: blue/black Thor phase 3.0

after looking in the mirror, it actually looks good. i like it.

bike: 1992 YZ125 -scratchy white plastic, purple seat. new seat cover and "graphics" coming soon. the only seat cover i found is black gripper on top and dark purple on the sides. the "graphics" are generic yamaha's, you know, six-inch 2002 white blocks on a blue background on a white radiator shroud, the white "yz" on blue background under the white blocks, etc. should look as good as my walmart-purchased formal gear that R.
Rohrich already mentioned

... aren't they all ?

Posted by: Danman---------------------

I can't afford to match. That would require buying everything at once. I tend to buy stuff as it wears out. Like I thrashed my jersey so I bought a new one. They did not have one that matched my pants on the last years left over gear rack :scream: I have bought a whole new set of gear at once or twice, but I'm sure that I will end up thrashing one peice of it for sure and buying something that does not match rea;y soon. So if you see a somebody on the trail with many different colors (thats me) don't bother to rag on him for it because he proably doesn't care

Posted by: swingarm---------------------

I used to have matching gear. now I just buy the ceapest jerseys and pants I find. The peolpe in the ambulence and the emergency room just cut that stuff off all the time anyway.

Imagine a whole day where that's ALL you see . . . trees and rocks and roots and hills . . . and the trail's only 18" wide instead of 8 feet!!!

I LOVE woods riding!

For some reason the MX track ALWAYS looks like that to me anyway :scream:

I'm lucky to be wearing matching gloves half the time. One guy I ride with doesn't even have matching boots.

Posted by: WoodsRider---------------------

Oh wait, there was one time my Wal-Mart jersey matched my helmet. This was one of the easier sections at last years Speedsville. Notice the tweaked handsavers from a previous crash.

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

I remember "Catfish" Rogers invariably wore old over-alls at the local MX track. He also could be identified by the chewing tobbaco juice running down his chin. As he was usually way out front, he looked just fine! Come to think of it; nearly any mix of gear looks good when the wearer is way out front.

Posted by: biglou---------------------

I posted with a picture of our local overall-wearing mx guy about a year ago. I have no idea what the thread was, all I know is that it was in the Flame Board. And yes, he's faster than we are...

Yeah, I remember when I was single!

Posted by: bbbom---------------------

So do you mean that the right glove should match the left glove or they should match the rest of the gear?

Woodsrider, that looks like one of our logging roads!!!

Here's an Idaho Trail that I stopped to take a picture of (see Rich, trees are our friends):

Posted by: dirty~d~---------------------

Interesting way to park your bike.

At a HS this past summer, there was guy who showed up for the amateur race with no bark busters, a t-shirt, jeans, hiking boots, no gloves, no goggles. They told him he had to wear at least some type of jacket... he went and put on a windbreaker and left it unzipped. To top it off, the guy could ride.

Yeah, it was pretty open there, but that's where the photographer was at. Didn't even know someone took my pic until I saw it on the ECEA website. Must've been one of the transfer sections before the gas stop (I fixed my handsavers at the gas stop). Ask LoriKTM how "tight" the early test sections were at Speedsville.

Your pic looks a lot more fun!

Posted by: bbbom---------------------

Just had to rib there Woods but you certainly were matching! From what Lori says your trails are similar to ours.

dirty~d, I often park my bike like that even if I do have a kickstand, I find it's easier to do it that way as I'm sliding off the back of the seat.

 Good point. LOL!!!

Posted by: WoodsRider---------------------

bbbom - If you ask nicely I'm sure Papakeith will tell you his technique for parking a CR Five-Hunnert straight up in a tree.

I really need to start carrying a camera!

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

One of my proudest moments Woods!

Posted by: WoodsRider---------------------

I though your proudest moment was finally getting up that dang hill?

A couple of Hail Marys and a donation to your local parish and all will be forgiven.

I myself have 3 sets, (well technically 5, but I don't wear the other 2) and I have a disease. Pants, jersey, gloves, socks, chest protector, kidney belt, tool pack, gear bag, goggle bag - all from the same manufacturer. What's wrong with me? Someone help!

Posted by: geremacheks---------------------

For us plain-wrap guys, some of that moto gear with all the designs and logos running haphazardly all over your body, helmets with every color of your daughter's 56 crayola pack, and gloves that look like tropical fish.....well, it's a little too much. (Looks good on the ladies, though.)

No wonder my youngest girl once asked me at a race: "Pa, are those clowns riding those bikes?"

For me, the local surplus or hunting gear store has all I need--and it needn't match. If the clothes look too new, just rut around on your belly in the dirt, run through some multifloral rose bushes, and let the bike fall on you a few times. After that, go woods riding, and it will be you they can't see for the forest for the trees. And those those eco-weenies won't see you either.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

I like moto pants. I like a tricked up helmet (see my pics!), but I can live without some of the moto jerseys. Too busy sometimes. But, I use the same brand of gear all the time now, or at most two. They both start with M so that's pretty close to matching!
