Putting on races requires organizations who have manpower, money, location and political savy. Some of the reasons the number of races are in decline are: Available clubs and club members to arrange the races. Money to set up the myriad of items that need to be prepaid such as ambulance service, insurance, sanctioning fees, land use fees, flyers, and on and on. Locations are more difficult to find. Your suggestion of Mammoth Bar is a good one, but the Polka Dots used to have a Hare Scramble there that was cancelled due to environmental complaints, lack of support from Mammoth Bar staff, and noise issues. Which brings up the last issue, political savy. It is hard to put on races when the political forces are predominately aligned against racing, or riding for that matter. A good example of this is the two events put on by the Redding Dirt Riders. For the past two years the events have been canceled because access to the park where the races are held has been restricted because participants have to cross Shasta Dam to get to the park. You need to post 48 hours notice to cross the dam currently. The club has been lobbying for two years to get the restriction modified. It is one that makes little sense.
What can be done? Join a club, get involved, donate to activist organizations that favor our sport such as the Blue Ribbon Coalition, keep informed through forums such as this, and much more.
Maybe then we'll all see more races. I, for one, am for that.

Very good knowledge and advice Bigbird! Alex, the best thing you can do is join a club. Not enough people help out in this sport. If you only ride, you have no room to complain (not that you are). This is some good advice, tell your friends!

Alex,
You can get out and race more by trying some enduros too!

Alex please join a club and get your riding friends to join also. For a list of clubs go to www.ama-d36.org and click on clubs. Also join the BRC (blueribbon coalition) it's the best group out there fighting for our riding rights.

This is one of the things that most people ask, but then don't get involved when told the answer.... The clubs need people to put on an event. These things justy don't happen overnight, and really take more time than you might think. My club puts on 3 events in a year and we plan for them a year in advance. The riders show up, have some fun and then get to go home. We have to layout the course, submit the permits, get approval from the BLM/County, get letters from any adjacent landowner saying it's ok to run near their property, get the insurance, and then the real works starts the week before the event...most of our members arrive 3 and 4 days early to mark the course and then we have to clean it all up afterwards....not real easy for our group of 25 dedicated members. So please join a club, help organize a ride and get involved. that's the only way that all of us can enjoy more events.
