Forget the bikes, I want to race one of those trucks :thumb:

Posted by: wakeboarder---------------------

I'd prefer one of those garbage truck thingys!

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

If anyone hasn't watched this yet I highly recommend it. They're giving decent coverage to the bikes, and the whole event is pretty entertaining. Those trucks are crazy!!!!!
Daily updates on Speedvision (showed up as "Auto Racing" on my DirecTV guide).

Big thumbs up! :thumb:

I'd hate to ride on the beaches like they were in Europe, it looked like constant head shake from the soft sand, I wouldn't last 10 minutes[]!

Posted by: wayneo426---------------------

Beach riding on a 400lb thumper doesnt look like alot of fun. On second thought,
I guess it beats sitting here in the snow!!!

Im waiting on the desert stages myself!!

I know they just show the pros, but I'm wondering if there are classes for us regular guys? I would love to do it. Just finishing it would be like winning to me. Ever since I first saw the rally on t.v., I have thought "I've got to do that!" Anyone know what the costs would be and what other classes there are? Maybe a group of DRN'ers could go over. Of course we may have to wear flak jackets going through Libya as Americans.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

I thought I saw a deal where KTM would provide you with a bike to ride and provide support for a hefty fee. Unfortunately, I didn't have the hefty fee :whiner:

Posted by: calamari racer---------------------

There still has to be another way. I'm sure we could get sponsors to help out a little and with the vast amount of DRN'ers with different companies, jobs, skills, etc., we could pull it off. We would just have to pool our resources and talents. Isn't that sort of like how Dirt Week is done? Maybe it's just not possible, but you don't know until you try. It would probably take a year or two at least in planning and training. I'll smack myself back into reality now.

Dakar is awesome! I could (and do!) watch this all day long. This programming alone is worth the price of cable. Dakar has to be the ultimate off-road adventure, bar none. Would I like to do it? HELL YEAH! Could I? HELL NO! Not in my wildest dreams could I hang on to a bike or car for thousands of high speed off-road miles. The costs have to be outrageous and logistics a total nightmare. But boy, if there was any possibility...!!!!!

Posted by: ozspode---------------------

The Dakar is an awsome event and Yes anyone can do it providing you have the funds.
Many European companies have turnkey packages where everything is supplied including bike, mechanic, food clothing, accomadation, spares....everything you can think of......all for a price of course.
I made an enquiry to one of them a couple of years ago and got a quote of $100000 australian (bout US$50k). that was the end of my dream

you can check out the website at www.dakar.com

Anybody know if there are any Americans in this year's race?

Posted by: calamari racer---------------------

I haven't noticed any on their rider list. Me and my wife were discussing that and wonder if it has anything to do with the terrorism climate.

Last year there was no Americans due to 9/11 looks like there are none again this year.

I see a couple Chevy Pro trucks in it. One in top 25 I think. The other at the bottom. I'm rooting for Alphe Cox. He's cool. It's just not the same without the KTM/BMW battle. I always wanted KTM to win but now it's not as cool without the competition. It's still AWESOME though!! I think one of the Ford Powered Schlesser buggies just quite. America's not looking so good in the Dakar this year. I guess a DRN'r will just have to go next year and kick some Butt. Don't look at me though..

Posted by: sweden_345---------------------

calamari!! Here in sweden we have a crazy farmer that thought it would be cool to try it out. Almost never raced before in his life. He started an sponsor club and took a bank loan to race year 2000 and off he went. This year he won his first stage.
The first year he finished 15th all by him self whit no mechanics and nothing

Posted by: Gary B.---------------------

Alphie Cox is out with a broken shoulder, and there is a bike racer by the name of Shawn Price riding a bike listing Canada as his country even though he's from San Francisco.

Hell I'd be happy to be just the wrench boy! Those garbage truck look to be a blast. Last night 1/14 they had those big thumper jumping off cliff's. Now those guy's have gut's!
