Heres the deal. I am 14 and I race a kx 100 in the woods. I'm going to be moving up to a full size bike in the next year. I've considered a YZ250F. I've heard alot of good about them. This would be my first 4-stroke and I don't know what kind of maintenence needs done on them. I can do all the routine maintenence on a 2-stroke, a top end is about as far as my mechanical knowledge goes, but I've heard that working on a 4-stroke is harder. I don't really want to buy a bike and be stuck with not knowing how to work on it. Any information on the mechanics of a 4-stroke or tricks you could share would be greatly appreciated.
THANX!!!

Ryno,

Not to worry. You will be doing a lot less topends on a 250f than what you did on your kx. All I have done to mine all season is change oil and airfilters. Now that it is winter I'm putting in new rings and a different cam. It is not that hard to do and you would be amazed at what the shop manual is like that comes with the bike. Between your abilities and the yamaha manual you will have nothing to worry about. Enjoy!!

In addition, if you are capable of doing a top end on a 2 stroke, you certainly can do the disassembly/assembly of a 4 stroke top end. Many of us that are totally capable of overhauling an engine still take our cylinder heads to a shop that has the proper tools to overhaul it.

It seems that the 250F lasts quite a long time. I would suspect that if you purchase a new bike or one that has low hours, you will be pleased with the long engine life.

Chris
