Hi, I'm looking for a durable and fun to ride bike for dual purpose use. There is a KDX 250 without piston and power valve I can buy for a good price- I guess the piston can be found aftermarket but is the complete power valve expensive?
What about weak points??
Will a KX engine fit and when which year??

it is pretty bullet proof bike and with a few mods to bring the power out of the motor it can be a very fun bike. a power valve would run you about $50 for just one. So if you are talking replacing the entire PV system it would probably run you about $150- $200. At least that is what I paid the dealer for one of mine. The only downfall to this bike is its weight but for dual-purpose it should be fine. Invest in a wiesco piston and get a pipe and silencer.

KevinKDX... you dual sport yours? full lighting kit? etc. etc.?
Enducross... I like mine ok, been very reliable (knock wood... ouch), as KevinKDX says they are pretty heavy, but extremely stable... good climbing rocky hills.
Mine is modded quite a bit FMF pipe etc, and apparently that helps the power plenty. Not as fast through woods as some other bikes (probably my age now tho), and sometimes I look for an extra gear on top, but overall I'm happy with it.
Do a search a year or so back, there have been some great suggestions for making modifications to the bike.

The power valves from http://www.honda-kawasaki are just under $37 each.
The cylinder is expensive, so hopefully the bike has that.
It is a good bike. SImilar motor to a 90-91 KX but with a WR tranny and lights. The frame is solid, so a bit heavy. The jetting and front forks will take a bit of work to make it a fast ride. The plastic is specific to the bike, so that can get spendy.
Inspect the rear swing arm and linkage bushings and the Uni-Trak link carefully as they are sore spots on the kawasakis. If those are worn, that is about a $300 fix total.

thx alot for your answers- I found out that it is a KDX 250 SR with oil pump system. Is this system working good or might it be better to take it out? How is the mixture ratio adjusted?

Hello David,
I own a KDX250SR and would like to pass on some information for you...
The SR model does not have the same power valve set-up as the "regular" KDX250 (US version)... the SR model only has the side valves... therefore the cylinder is different... also the piston for the US version DOES NOT work in the SR model although bore and stroke data is the same... the wrist pin location on the SR model is higher on the piston skirt than the US version... you'll run into BIG trouble is you put a Wiseco or other brand piston for a US version KDX250 into your SR KDX!
The oil injection set-up is great for a dual sport bike... just keep the 2 stroke oil tank full and you just pop into a gas station to fill up... great for long dual sport type of rides. There is an adjustment for the "mixture" on the oil pump itself. There are a couple of marks on the valve (operates with the throttle cable) - one is for idle and the other for wide open... just adjust the cable jam nut to tweak the mixture...
My SR model is in the Philippines and I own a US version too in Pennsylvania. The US version is a much higher performing bike (engine-wise) than the SR model which is mildly tuned for on-off road use, but nevertheless I really like my SR model. The SR has a 33mm Keihin carb while the US version has a 38mm.
The suspension components, brake components, and most everything else is the same between the two bikes. The biggest difference is in the engine. I have found that Elliot cycles in the UK can source parts for the SR model... apparently there are quite a few of them in the UK. Never sold "new" there but lots have been imported as used bikes.

thnx alot, it is funny you are talking of the phillipines because I stay in thailand with my wife for vacation and I bought this kdx for having some fun out here! It seems to be difficult to get this engine to life-maybe I should look for an used KX cylinder! How is the power of the SR version compared to Your KDX in PA???

Hi David,
I would say the power of the SR model is about 80% of the US version, but nevertheless it makes a very nice dual sport bike.
I don't think you will be able to remedy the situation by some KX or US version KDX engine components... I guess it's possible, but you may invest money in parts and they would not be compatible. I would suggest that either you get KDX (SR parts) and live with the performance OR get a complete US version KX or KDX. But then again, if you can get parts cheaply, you might give it a try... let me know how you make out...

it is a pity I couldn't try the bike since it has no piston in it! The question is should I buy the power valve parts (about 130$) and a new OEM piston (probably about 180$) and later I am not satisfied with the output or should I find an used KX (better KDX which is difficult out here) and use it as a spare parts bike which would make more sense since here in Thailand it is really difficult to get parts....... do you have a source in Manila where you can get all the parts? Or where do you get spare parts? Maybe it should be possible to order them from Japan? Questions over questions- I found a shop in Bangkok which quite a few parts for KDX but when they don't have a part it takes about 3 Month to get it!!! I can't believe this!

It is too bad that the bike wasn't complete before you bought it! What kind of riding are you planning to do? If you are planning on trail riding and using it as another mode of transportation around town, I think the KDX (SR) will be completely adequate.
I have a friend in Japan who was willing to get specialty parts for me from the Kawasaki dealers there. There are no parts available in Manila (except generic items like chains and sprockets and spark plugs)
If you could find another KDX around to "test ride" you would get a better idea of the bike's performance.

I did just that and think it has a small powerband- you can feel the power valve working but when climbing rpm's it flats out kind of quickly....since I will not have much time coming to thailand next year I decided to give the engine to a friends shop who can get parts from japan. A piston kit it fairly cheap here- about 90 US$ so the power valve will not be as expensive as I expected! I will give it a try pretty much OEM style except modified pipe (cut out some of the crap inside) and carb so that I hope to find some more top end.........
Another point is weight since I feel the subframe is really heavy- maybe I can find a better solution for that.
I plan on doing some serious trail riding in the north of thailand but with the opportunity to run it on highways to so I guess I am looking for the do-it-all kind of bike which is always a compromise here and there.
I checked the bike all over and I think it is a real enduro bike with some good solutions on it.
I am leaving home to germany on saturday so I will not see my green baby for a while but this is a strong motivation to come back as soon as possible!

Hi, after over two years I finally can report about the first ride with my bike
! Back in March I took it around for 10 days riding in the northern parts of Thailand- and it was fun!
We did both serious enduro- and relaxed trail-riding.
My Thai buddy found a basically stock spare KDX-SR engine.
I was satisfied with the output (especially compared to the XR250 rental bikes) but now I told him to modify the cylinder, put in new top end and exchange the front fork to one of a 125MX-bike. The good thing is he is racing himself so he knows quite some people over there.
The only thing left for me to do is to find the appropiate reeds for the formerly installed Boyesen RAD-valve. Unfortunately there is no designation on this so I have to hope it is the one for the KDX-SR and not some other modding.
So I am really looking forward to come back for the next test ride with my green baby!
