2 stroke in woods?

I have been looking aorund for a new bike. I currently ride a TTR-225 (learner bike) I want somrything with tuns more power that I can ride woods with. I was thinking of getting a RM 250. Does anyone know how the 2 strokes react in the woods. HOw is the traction, does it handle good, what are the drawbacks. I also would like a 2 stroke because soem rtacks have MX built intot hema nd I would excell in that point with a rm. But then again I dont know how the bike will do in the woods. Would getting a wr250F be the better choice? I was also looking at the 03's but im just not sure. I want the best bike that I will not outgrow. I see many riders on TV riding 2 strokes with no problem, do they have lots of mods on the bikes? I went to a enduro and many riders were just beginning and had 2 strokes. Do they go faster in woods? I need all the help i can get on this please give as much info as possable and fast bacause I might buy the rm 250 next week. Thank you.

I would get the YZ250 for woods because it has a wider powerband but the Rm has almost the same low and mid (perhaps slightly more) as the YZ. Both are great handlers but the RM is more likely to get headshake and be a bit unstable on 4th and 5th gear trails.
The CRF might be a better choice for woods as it has a very comfy seat and plush suspension and the engine keeps the power to the ground more than a 2 stroke would. I doubt you would ever out grow a CRF or 250. But as far as 250's go, the YZ would be the best choice.

Now as far as 125's go what is the best woods bike. NOt ktm they cost too much. And what is your openion on the wr250F is it a good all around bike. What is a good all around bike ( track and woods) (race pace)

i see lots of people blowing by me on WR250's. since i totally kick ass as a rider, it must mean that these bikes make up for deficient skills in others. in fact, a lot of bikes seem to do this. its the only explanation.

Josh,
If you really want the ultimate 2-stroke woods bike you need to starting looking at the GREEN ones. The KDX 200/220 is an excellant choice. It has the 2-stroke fun and excitement, plus is very easy to ride in the woods, and can handle any MX type riding in the woods. You can even get on the MX track and play if you want to & the bike will do just fine. Do some simple Mods. (Pipe, Air Box Lid) and you have a very much alive 2-stroke in the woods and years of awesome fun.

Ok so what would be my best bet on a bike ( that I wont need a new one in 2 years) the Wr250F or the Green KDX220? woods racing!

Josh,
I have riden the 4 stroke and 2 stroke. XR 200 and the KDX 200. I haven't riden the WR 250. But I will take the KDX 200 any day. It has the power, fun and flexiblity to do everything. The KDX will blow that TTR 225 out of the water and give you the 2 stroke fun that ONLY a 2 stroke can. Plus I'll bet an 03 KDX 220 is even less money than the WR 250. 03 WR 250 $5799 vs. 03 KDX 220 $4399. For $1400 you can do some really cool Mods. and make that KDX scream. Plus the KDX will last a really long time and you won't get bored with it( at least I don't). I still have my 83 KDX (wife rides it).
Ok, I confess I am a Kawasaki KDX "sold out" fan. For the woods I wouldn't look at any other bike (except maybe the KTM 250EXC or 300EXC, but they can get pricey).

there is absolutely no comparison between an XR200 and the WR250, and no inferrence can be drawn between them. saddle time on an XR200 tells you nothing about the KDX vs the WR.
having said that the questions you must answer, josh, are: is one dealer clearly superior to the other? do i want 2 strke hassles or 4 strke hassles? which bike fits you better? which bike can you get the best deal on?
once you've answered these questions you will be able to choose well. both bikes rip in the woods and both are head and shoulders above that POS TTR225 you are on now.
speaking of TTR's, i understand that the TTR250's are major ragers (and thankfully share no kinship to the horrible 225). maybe take a look at the 250?

The KDX is a great choice. (I had a 220) Not to confuse you too much but a Yamaha 250 YZF also makes a great woods bike that can be an MX bike. (Because it is an MX bike!) The YZF is more current in the handling and suspension department than the KDX by 10 years or so. A couple fellas ride them here in the MI woods almost exclusivly and do real well on them, I can't catch one of the guys! BUT they are almost $6K I think. You should be able to get a KDX for under $4500.00 out the door. Then go to the KDX forums and justKDX website and learn how to trick her out.

Josh,
Fred T & Beer Stud bring up important points. Look at dealers and deals. And don't forget the YZ 250F. If I was looking for a new bike, I would choose: 4 stroke = YZ 250F / 2 stroke = KDX 220. Just my .02
Good lucky, be safe, and watch out for the Treeeeeeees!

Another option would be the KTM 200 exc. They have bottom end power similar to a 250 two stroke and rev out like a 125 two stroke. They are a blast to ride. If you have a good dealer close, it would be worth a look.

Whatever you get make sure it is an enduro bike. They are much easier to ride on trails. The pros need to put thousands of dollars into converting a MX bike to enduro. It's a nice way to go if you can afford $8K for a dirtbike.

I would take a good look at a KDX. Riding my KX125 in the woods was a PITA. I bought a2001 KDX220r for 4000.00 out the door.
Where I live in New York all the places I ride have alot of rocks roots and downed trees. Its fun to ride over this stuff instead of work to get through it. :thumb:

Josh;
I also highly recommend the KDX220! BUT- you will need to spend abit more on the bike to really enjoy it. I had the suspension revalved, put on an FMF gnarly pipe and TC2 silencer, and use a Twin-Air filter. Also, open up the airbox. With these mods, you will have a super bike that is lightweight and will pull you through the tight rooty stuff and go fast when you want that too. Keep in mind you will have to learn about jetting, but that's not too hard. Good luck.

Get a three stroke...
That's what most people call
a Gas Gas.
Posted by: Enduro_Nut---------------------
Justql is right on target - GasGas is a great machine. I'm a previous KDX owner and the GG feels right at home, only much improved. The 250 is a little snappier; the 300 is torquer. Woods handling is perfect for me.
Try one out! :thumb:

If price is an issue, go for 2nd hand. You can usually find a nice KDX on E-Bay for $2000-$2500. Just be sure to ask questions before bidding, and take along an experienced hand for the pick-up. It worked for my buddy, he got a great '96 YZ 250 for $2400, but he still can't beat me on my KDX 200 in the woods.

KDX's make THE BEST woods bike. Easy to ride, forgiving, and great performance. And I have a 2003 model for sale.....hardly ridden, immaculate, extras, $3900. I might be a bit far away from you, though! kmonette@idapac.com
But no matter where you buy it, you'll have a blast on it. They are one (if not the most) of the most quiet 2-strokes out there. Ride one if you get a chance.......you'll be hooked!

well i decided, im getting the 03 wr250!! I can not wait i am getting it in 2 weeks!! Ne1 else got one yet? Ill post a ride report when i do.

It sounds like you ride in a similiar type of terrain to me.
Way back when, I road a YZ125 in the woods while friends had XR250s, XR200s, KDX200 and a CR250 and a few ATVs.
I will say it was not easy to ride my YZ in the tight woods because it was really lacking down low and unless you were wide open it was tough to make it up some hills.
I had a chance to ride almost all the other bikes.
While the XRs were very smooth in terms of power delivary and torque they felt like tanks to me. Very reliable too.
The KDX was a nice split between the MXers and the Enduro bikes.
What you have to figure out is what are you out there for?
A) Do you ride through the woods to get to tracks and practice some jumping?
OR
B) Do you ride tracks every once in a while when you find them after riding through the woods?
I choose A and just bought a RM250.
